EdgeX Foundry Facilitating IoT Interoperability by Extending Cloud Native Principles to the Edge GLOBAL SPONSORS
The IoT requires architecting from Edge to Core to Cloud EDGE/FIELD FOG CLOUD SECURITY MANAGEABILITY ANALYTICS 2
The leading infrastructure provider for enterprise IoT 3
The IoT market is inherently heterogeneous
and the majority of the challenges are at the Edge. Hundreds of protocols Mix of IP and non-ip connectivity Widely distributed computing nodes, often in unsecure areas Need for real-time response, regardless of backend connectivity OS fragmentation Broad protocol standardization Entirely IP-based connectivity Wide use of APIs Computing generally in physically secure locations
Today s Fragmented IoT Ecosystem
EdgeX Foundry TM is a vendor-neutral open source project hosted by The Linux Foundation building a common open framework for IoT edge computing. At the heart of the project is an interoperability framework hosted within a full hardware- and OS-agnostic reference software platform to enable an ecosystem of plug-and-play components that unifies the marketplace and accelerates the deployment of IoT solutions. Architected to be agnostic to silicon (e.g., x86, ARM), OS (e.g., Linux, Windows, Mac OS), and application environment (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python, Go Lang, C/C++) to support customer preferences for differentiation
EdgeX Foundry Goals Build and promote EdgeX as the common open platform unifying Internet of Things (IoT) edge computing. Enable and encourage the rapidly growing community of IoT solutions providers to create an ecosystem of interoperable plug-and-play components around the EdgeX platform architecture. Certify EdgeX components to ensure interoperability and compatibility. Provide tools to quickly create EdgeX-based IoT edge solutions that can easily adapt to changing business needs. Collaborate with relevant open source projects, standards groups, and industry alliances to ensure consistency and interoperability across the IoT. 8
Platform Architecture EdgeX Foundry leverages cloud-native principles to enable massively-scalable solutions for the IoT Edge. Loosely-coupled, containerized microservices for scalability and deployment flexibility Agnostic to hardware, OS and application environment Common device SDK for interoperability between connectivity standards and appllications

EdgeX Born from Dell IoT Thought Leadership Began in July 2015 as a Dell CTO incubation project code-named FUSE Architecture curated with feedback from our partners and end customers in thousands of direct engagements Launched into open source through the Linux Foundation at Hannover Messe on April 24, 2017 Dell seeded the project by donating the FUSE code base and technical documentation Over 50 founding member organizations at launch has now grown to 60+ Largest project launch in Linux Foundation history! 17

Notes on Positioning EdgeX with Customers (not part of main speaking deck)
Strategy behind open source EdgeX is a key part of our IoT strategy to facilitate scale in the currently fragmented market We open-sourced our IP to ensure the foundation is pervasive but we will still add our own differentiation without breaking the APIs that drive cross-vendor interoperability We selected the Linux Foundation as a well-respected vendor-neutral community. Cloud Foundry Foundation is also hosted there, as are other IoT-relevant open source projects such as the Cloud Native Compute Foundation and the Open Container Initiative. Stability in the core EdgeX framework is maintained by a Technical Steering Committee and ongoing security is ensured by an entire community addressing potential threats Anyone can productize the code and include their own differentiation but to be EdgeX-certified they would bring their offer back for certification that they maintained the APIs that facilitate interoperability with the broader ecosystem 24
Positioning to Customers The EdgeX Foundry project is not Dell IP, rather a vendor-neutral open source collaboration to facilitate interoperability in the IoT market. Position Dell as a clear thought leader but not the owner. Still, it is valuable to work with Dell on the project because we had the foresight to get the collaboration started, are key contributing members, and will be building value around the open core by combining assets from across Dell Technologies and partners We intend to productize an EdgeX-compliant software stack and add our own IP from across Dell Technologies. We will monetize our offerings around hardware, security, system management, and analytics in addition to partner rev share. EdgeX will eventually enable an online marketplace. The code is functional today and customers and partners can download and use it for PoCs but it is not hardened for production quite yet. Use judgement in promoting to customers based on deal timing and set expectations accordingly. The EdgeX community is targeting having a baseline suited for commercialization in 2H 2018 but customers could choose to accelerate that. Many of our partners have joined the project as well. Message to customers: work with our experienced partners to benefit from real ROI now and the EdgeX effort will only make things better over time. 25
