Ballet Egyptien became his most famous work when it was included in Verdi s Aida. Bagatelle Antonin Dvorak, arr. Robert Sieving The Czech composer Antonin Dvorak liked to base works on the sounds of his native land. The Bagatelle was originally written as a chamber piece and shows a Gypsy influence. Simple Gifts arr. Merle J. Isaac Simple Gifts is one of the most recognizable American folk songs and is credited with the origins of a Shaker Hymn. Jamais On N a Vu..French-Canadian Folk Song, arr. Judy Herrington This lively friendship song features a playful French- Canadian text reminiscent of early settlement days. The English version is not a direct translation, but captures the essence of this spirited, buoyant folk song. Boats Sail on the Rivers.....Victor C. Johnson Victor Johnson s legato melody tenderly expresses the simple beauty of floating clouds as described by Christina Rosetti, a nineteenth century poet. The brief a cappella section provides a lovely contrast to the accompanied lines. Tonight we are pleased to feature Ju Mee Kim as our piano accompanist. Hello, Girls.. American Folksong, arr. Lloyd Pfautsch With apologies to BoyzNoyz, we sing this perky arrangement of a comical American folksong. Listen for the harmonic characteristics of early American banjo music as well as mention of interesting cuisine. We welcome again Ju Mee Kim as accompanist. Shenandoah Traditional, Chantey Shenandoah is a capstan chantey of American origin. It s subject is the Shenandoah river, the valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains it runs through. Homeland...arr. Z. Randall Stroope At first, the tune may seem familiar, since it is commonly known as Jupiter s Theme from Gustav Holst s The Planets. The text was later added in remembrance of past leaders who fought to secure freedom and preserve our current Homeland. The second and third verses were later added in remembrance of the arranger s father who marched in the Bataan Death March in World War II.
Tshotsholoza...Trad. South African, Jeffery Ames Tshotsholoza is a traditional freedom song featuring solid harmonies and rhythmic syncopation. The text translates: You are moving fast on these mountains, the train is coming out of South Africa. O Bella Fusa....Orlando di Lasso Orlando di Lasso was a versatile Renaissance era composer who created over 2000 compositions. He wrote in virtually every style of the period, both sacred and secular music. O Bella Fusa is an Italian canzonetta. The lyrics paint a sonic picture of a shining spinning wheel and implore a buyer to choose the threads of red, yellow, green, soft gray, and gold all aglow. We are pleased to welcome Rachel Brosius as our piano accompanist. A Spiritual Quodlibet.....arr. Ysaye Barnwell A quodlibet is defined as a form of music with a variety of melodies performed in counterpoint often called partner songs. Cantate Domino..Giuseppe Pitoni Giuseppe Pitoni served as choirmaster and resident composer at St. Peter s in Rome. His setting of Cantate Domino, as presented tonight by CD Chanson, serves as one of the most well known compositions of its kind. Listen closely for the disjunct placement of the beat, which occurs at the end of each phrase. I Am Not Yours David Childs There are various interpretations to poet Sara Teasdale s text, although the underlying message is most likely of an unrequited love. The poignant poetry and legato melodic line work well together to create a tender and expressive piece. Maximína...Julián Gómez Giraldo A traditional Columbian song, Maximína takes on the Pacific Region of Columbian style of Porro Chocoano. Although the text tells of an insignificant event a broken sewing machine it was actually quite an undertaking since owning a sewing machine was not easy. Additionally, due to Columbia s jagged topography, the transportation of anything was difficult through rivers and mountains. Let the Heaven Light Shine On Me Moses Hogan Moses Hogan s body of work has provided musicians and choirs with a quintessential model for African- American spirituals. Let the Heaven Light Shine On Me is one of Hogan s last compositions, written shortly before his untimely death in 2003. This piece was written originally for Dr. Tony Leach and the Essence of Joy Gospel Choir from Penn State University. Sure On This Shining Night (from Nocturnes)....Morten Lauridsen Morten Lauridsen is respected as one of America s most harmonic and melodic rich composers. Here, Lauridsen sets the beautiful text of American author, James Agee. The marriage of epic text and sonorous harmonies, together with the contrast of sustained voicing against melodic flow helps create one of the most stunning presentations of 21 st century choral music. Tonight s piano accompanist is fellow CD Singer alto, Leah Robinson. Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal..Trad., Alice Parker The traditional early American tune Invitation is heard here in the iconic style of Alice Parker. Coming out of the shape note song style, Mrs. Parker s presentation captures the rhythmic intensity and solid chord structure that highlights the early American song approach.
