Contemporary: Consider the style of your Preference Round as well as the Preference style of the other chapters on your campus. Will a selection of all traditional songs or contemporary songs be more appropriate for the culture of your chapter and campus? Perhaps a mix of traditional and contemporary songs will be effective. Vocals: Before choosing songs that require heavy or complicated vocal performances, consider the follow: Are the women in your chapter strong vocal performers? Are members comfortable with singing? Do we have women able and willing to perform solos? Music Quality: Any music used during Preference, be it accompaniment or a sound track, must be professional. Musical instruments should be in tune and appropriate for the song and sound tracks should never include the original vocals, only the musical portion. All music should be easily heard by everyone taking part in the Preference Ceremony and not so loud as to drown out vocalists. Vocal Resources: Call on chapter members, advisors and alumnae with musical expertise to teach or assist in teaching songs/music to chapter members. Practice Makes Perfect: Do not pull out the song sheets the day before Preference and expect the chapter members to be in tune. Preference songs should be selected during the recruitment event planning process and taught and practiced during Recruitment Training School and Polish Week, leaving plenty of time for adjustment if needed. At least one full dress rehearsal should be scheduled to ensure optimum acoustics.
At the Beginning (From Anastasia; Songwriters: Lynn Ahrens, Steven Flaherty; Performed by: Donna Lewis, Richard Marx) We were strangers starting out on a journey Never dreaming what we'd have to go through Now here we are and I'm suddenly standing No one told me I was going to find you Unexpected, what you did to my heart When I lost hope you were there to remind me This is the start : Life is a road and I want to keep going Love is a river I wanna keep flowing Live is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey I'll be there when the world stops turning I'll be there when the storm is through In the end I wanna be standing We were strangers on a crazy adventure Never dreaming how our dreams would come true Now here we stand, unafraid of the future I knew there was somebody somewhere Like me alone in the dark Now I know my dream will live on I've been waiting so long Nothing's gonna tear us apart Life is a road and I wanna keep going Love is a river I wanna keep going on... The original song is lengthy and while the lyrics do not need to be changed, consider eliminating the bridge. Recommended version: We were strangers starting out on a journey Never dreaming what we'd have to go through Now here we are and I'm suddenly standing No one told me I was going to find you Unexpected, what you did to my heart When I lost hope you were there to remind me This is the start : Life is a road and I want to keep going Love is a river I wanna keep flowing Live is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey I'll be there when the world stops turning I'll be there when the storm is through In the end I wanna be standing We were strangers on a crazy adventure Never dreaming how our dreams would come true Now here we stand, unafraid of the future Life is a road and I wanna going Love is river I wanna keep flowing In the end I wanna be standing Starting out on a journey Life is a road and I wanna going Love is river I wanna keep flowing In the end I wanna be standing
Enchanted (Songwriter: Taylor Swift; Performed by: Taylor Swift) There I was again tonight forcing laughter, faking smiles Same old tired, lonely place, walls of insincerity Shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when I saw your face All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you Your eyes whispered "have we met?" Across the room your silhouette starts to make it's way to me The playful conversation starts Counter all your quick remarks like passing notes in secrecy And it was enchanting to meet you All I can say is I was enchanted to meet you This night is sparkling, don't you let it go I'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home I'll spend forever wondering if you knew I was enchanted to meet you The lingering question kept me up 2am, who do you love? I wonder till I'm wide awake Now I'm pacing back and forth, wishing you were at my door I'd open up and you would say, It was enchanting to meet you All I know is I was enchanted to meet you : This night is sparkling, don't you let it go I'm wonderstruck, blushing all the way home I'll spend forever wondering if you knew This night is flawless, don't you let it go I'm wonderstruck, dancing around all alone I'll spend forever wondering if you knew I was enchanted to meet you This is me praying that this was the very first page Not where the story line ends My thoughts will echo your name until I see you again These are the words I held back as I was leaving too soon I was enchanted to meet you Please don't be in love with someone else Please don't have somebody waiting on you (Repeat) Please don t be in love with someone else Please don t have somebody waiting on you The original song is lengthy and the lyrics need to be altered to make it appropriate for Preference. Consider eliminating the bridge and incorporating the following lyric changes. Recommended version: Here we are again tonight, lots of laughter, lots of smiles Looking for the perfect home Hard to choose, hard to decide, how will you make up your mind This might be where you belong All we can say is it was enchanting to meet you Full of love and full of life Sisterhood so true, so right Can you feel what we can see? Look around open your heart This is where your journey starts This is where you should be And it was enchanting to meet you All we can say is it was enchanted to meet you This night is sparkling, don't you let it go We re wonderstruck, dancing all the way home We ll spend forever wondering if you knew We were enchanted to meet you The lingering question kept us up 2am, who do you love? We wonder till we re wide awake Now we re pacing back and forth, wishing you were at our door We d open up and you would say, It was enchanting to meet you All we can say is it was enchanted to meet you : This night is sparkling, don't you let it go We re wonderstruck, dancing all the way home We ll spend forever wondering if you knew This night is flawless, don't you let it go We re wonderstruck, dancing all the way home We ll spend forever wondering if you knew We were enchanted to meet you We were enchanted to meet you
Feels Like Home (Songwriter: Randy Newman; Performed by: Various artists) Something in your eyes, Makes me want to lose myself Makes me want to lose myself In your arms. There's something in your voice, Makes my heart beat fast Hope this feeling lasts The rest of my life. If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone If you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done. It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong A window breaks down a long dark street And a siren wails in the night. But I'm alright 'cause I have you here with me And I can almost see through the dark there is light. If you knew how much this moment means to me And how long I've waited for your touch. If you knew how happy you are making me I never thought that I'd love anyone so much. Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong The lyrics need to this song need to be altered to make it appropriate for Preference. Also, consider having soloists perform the verses and the chapter perform a chorus. Recommended version: Something bout this place Makes me want to be myself Makes me want to be myself All the time There's something bout this place Makes my heart beat fast Hope this feeling lasts The rest of my life If you knew how precious these years have been And how much I ve been so loved If you knew how I wanted something to come along And change my life the way you've done : It feels like I'm all the way back where I come from Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong This night may be where a journey starts See the joy is brings to your life And I m so glad I have you here with me And I have no doubt, what you will find If you knew how much this moment means to me And how long we've waited for this night. And if you knew how happy we think you would be You should know that this place is so right (Entire Chapter) Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong (Soloist)
For Good (From Wicked the Musical; Songwriter: Stephen Schwartz; Performed by: Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth) ELPHABA: I'm limited. Just look at me--i'm limited And just look at you You can do all I never could, Glinda... So now it's up to you For both of us - now it's up to you GLINDA: I've heard it said That people come into our lives for a reason Bringing something we must learn And we are lead to those Who help us most to grow if we let them And we help them in return Well I don't know if I believe that's true But I know I'm who I am today Because I knew you Like a comet pulled from orbit As it passes a sun Like a stream that meets a boulder Halfway through the wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better But because I knew you I have been changed for good ELPHABA: It well maybe, That we will never meet again In this lifetime So let me say before we part So much of me Is made of what I learned from you You'll be with me Like a handprint on my heart And now whatever way our stories end I know you'll have rewritten mine By being my friend Like a ship blown from its mooring By a wind off the sea Like a sea dropped by a sky bird In a distant wood Who can say if I've been changed for the better But because I knew you... GLINDA: Because I knew you... BOTH: I have been changed for good ELPHABA: And just to clear the air I ask forgiveness For the things I've done, you blamed me for GLINDA: But then, I guess, We know there's blame to share BOTH: And none of it seems to matter, anymore Like a comet pulled from orbit (Like a ship blown from it's mooring) As it passes a sun (By a wind off the sea) Like a stream that meets a boulder (Like a sea dropped by bird) Halfway through the wood (In the wood) Who can say if I've been changed for the better I do believe I have been changed for the better GLINDA: And because I knew you... ELPHABA: Because I knew you... BOTH: Because I knew you, I have been changed... For good

I ll Stand by You (Songwriters: Chrissie Hynde, Tom Kelly, Billy Steinberg; Performed by: The Pretenders) Oh, why you look so sad? Tears are in your eyes Come on and come to me now Don't be ashamed to cry Let me see you through 'Cause I've seen the dark side too When the night falls on you You don't know what to do Nothin' you confess, could make me love you less : I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you Won't let nobody hurt you I'll stand by you So, if you're mad, get mad Don't hold it all inside Come on and talk to me now Hey, what you got to hide? I get angry too Well I'm a lot like you When you're standing at the crossroads And don't know which path to choose Let me come along 'Cause even if you're wrong Take me in, into your darkest hour And I'll never desert you I'll stand by you And when, when the night falls on you, baby You're feelin' all alone You won't be on your own Take me in, into your darkest hour And I'll never desert you I'll stand by you The lyrics to this song do not need to be changed. Make You Feel My Love (Songwriter: Bob Dylan; Performed by: Various artists) When the rain is blowing in your face And the whole world is on your case I could offer you a warm embrace When the evening shadows and the stars appear And there is no one there to dry your tears I could hold you for a million years I know you haven't made your mind up yet But I would never do you wrong I've known it from the moment that we met No doubt in my mind where you belong I'd go hungry I'd go black and blue and I'd go crawling down the avenue You know there's nothing that I wouldn't do The storms are raging on the rolling sea And on the highway of regret The winds of change are blowing wild and free You ain't seen nothing like me yet I could make you happy Make your dreams come true Nothing that I wouldn't do Go to the ends of the Earth for you The lyrics to this song do not need to be changed.
