Sections 2,3, and 5 are dependent on CHAPTER. Sections 1 and 4 can be taken from anywhere in the book. You must write in complete sentences.

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT NAME: DUE DATE: August 10 th -11 th (depending on which day you have English class) Dear Incoming 9 th Graders, This is your summer reading activity. You will need to read the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and complete the charts provided to you in this packet. I would recommend that you complete the charts as you read. If you try to complete it after reading the entire book, the assignment will be much more difficult than it is intended to be. Grading will be based on the following criteria: 1. Completion of all charts 2. Writing in complete, thoughtful sentences 3. Accuracy and Quality 4. Annotations you can look at my annotations and do something similar or show me how you annotate now. You should DEFINITELY NOT wait to work on this activity until the last minute. This will only be painful if you choose to wait until the last minute to begin it. This activity will be due during the first week that you return to school. It is essential that you take the time to work on it and do it well. I will refer back to this book during our first unit. I really think you will like this book as it is similar to The Giver, Divergent, The Uglies, and The City of Ember. There are 5 sections to the activity: 1. Figurative Language 25 examples of figurative language IN THE NOVEL ASSIGNED. This can be similes, metaphors, personification, oxymoron, hyperbole, puns, etc 2. Theme This section explores the themes of individuality and sin and evil in the novel. The novel gives many examples of how the government has erased each person s individuality. You need to give 10 examples from the beginning to the end of the novel of the different methods used to erase individuality and how individuality is punished. You may also want to explore how individuality is regained by the main character. 3. Character Description Introduce 5-10 characters as the show up in the novel, even minor characters! State the chapter, give a sentence from the story that describes them, then tell me what you can tell about the type of personality they possess. You may need to repeat some characters and discuss their changes. 4. Sentences I want to make sure you remember the 5 sentence types. You can pull these sentences anywhere from the novel: Simple, compound, complex, compound-complex, and dialogue. 5. Chapter Reflection At the end of each chapter, you need to write a reflection. It needs to be at least 3 sentences long. You can write about what surprised you, what you think will happen next, and any other thoughts, feelings, or questions that you have. Sections 2,3, and 5 are dependent on CHAPTER. Sections 1 and 4 can be taken from anywhere in the book. You must write in complete sentences. Sincerely, Your 9 th Grade English Teacher, Mr. Murphy I look forward to being your 9 th grade English teacher! If you have questions over the summer, you may email me at almurphy@uplifteducation.org. You can print or read this text online for free at http://anthemfilm.com/anthemtext.pdf. It is approximately 32 pages. I plan for you to write an essay about your reading when you return to school!

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT PART 1: 25 EXAMPLES OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, give examples of figurative language throughout the novel and tell me what type of figurative language it is. (For example, simile, metaphor, personification, etc ) EXAMPLE PAGE LABEL wagons which moved without horses 2 Metaphor for cars lights which burned without flame 2 Metaphor for lightbulbs

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT PART 2: THEME, throughout the entire story the theme of individuality and sin & evil changes and develops. Record these examples in the chart below and write commentary about each example and the page it happens. EXAMPLE PAGE COMMENTARY (To help you get started -initial reaction to the example, importance to the character, what does this say about humanity) We strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike. 1 In our world, we strive to be different, individual, and unique. It is shocking to think that all people must be the same. Furthermore, the main character calls himself we when he is clearly an I. The language of this society serves as a reminder that they are the same and equal.

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT EXAMPLE PAGE COMMENTARY (To help you get started -initial reaction to the example, importance to the character, what does this say about humanity) Part 3: CHARACTER DESCRIPTION, Give the name and chapter of each character introduced in the novel and a sentence from the novel that describes them. Then, tell me what you can infer about the character s personality. CHARACTER &Chapter introduced DESCRIPTION (sentence from the novel with page number) WHAT CAN YOU INFER ABOUT THE CHARACTER S PERSONALITY? Chapter 1 Equality 7-2521 We are 21 years old. We are 6 feet tall, and this is a burden for there are not many men who are six feet tall. He recognizes that he is different from the rest of his people. He probably feels awkward and ashamed.

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT PART 4: SENTENCE STRUCTURE, copy an example from the text of each type of sentence. Below is a quick overview of each type of sentence. Sentence Type Clause(s) Simple Independent Compound Independent + Independent Complex Independent + Dependent [OR] Dependent + Independent Compound Complex Independent + Independent + Dependent (clauses in any order) Independent Clause An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought. An independent clause is a sentence. Example: Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz. Dependent Clause A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause cannot be a sentence. Often a dependent clause is marked by a dependent marker word. Example: When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz... (What happened when he studied? The thought is incomplete.) Simple sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and no dependent clauses. Example: My aunt enjoyed taking the hayride with you. Example: China s Han Dynasty officially Confucianism. Compound Sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses but no dependent clauses. Example: The clown frightened the little girl, and she ran off screaming. Example: The Freedom Riders departed on May 4, 1961, and they were determined to travel through many southern states. Complex Sentence: A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT Example: While all of his paintings are fascinating, Hieronymus Bosch's triptychs are the real highlight of his art. Example: Mary discovered that the lemonade stand was 32 cents short after adding up all the sales. Complex Compound Sentence: A sentence with multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Catch 22 is widely regarded as Joseph Heller's best novel, and because Heller served in World War II, which the novel satirizes, the zany but savage wit of the novel packs an extra punch. Sentence Type Example from the text Simple Sentence/page # Pg. 1 It is a sin to write this. Simple sentences have only one independent clause. This sentence does not have any conjunctions or commas to connect multiple clauses, so it is only 1 independent clause. Therefore, it is a simple sentence. Anthem Summer JOURNAL ASSIGNMENT PART 5: PERSONAL RESPONSES to EACH CHAPTER. Each response should be a minimum of 3 sentences! CHAPTER What did you learn about this society in this chapter? Did anything surprise or shock you? Were any questions raised or left unanswered in the chapter? What do you think will happen next? Why does this matter today? Chapter 1 Initially, I thought this story takes place in the past, but after some closer reading, especially after the description of cars, light bulbs, and skyscrapers, this must be OUR future. They seem to have traded our modern luxuries for candles and simple living. I can only assume that maybe there was really bad pollution or a nuclear war that caused them to change our time. Next, I feel really bad for Equality 7-2521. He seems like a normal person. Being different shouldn t be wrong. The things he calls sins writing, wishing, spending time alone are not sins. Sins are supposed to be crimes against God. His crimes are against his society! Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
