THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF Joint SCIENCIES SuperComputer Center
Development of e-infrastructure for scientific communities There are three main goals we are working on: further development and evaluation of high-performance communication networks for research and education high-performance computing (supercomputers, GRID infrastructure, applications) create, collect and federate Scientific data (Digital Repositories) in order to use digital content in research, education and extract knowledge out of data
e-infrastructure for Scientific Communities Integrated Information Space of RAS Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library National Portal for Knowledge, Science and Culture
RAS Scientific Information Space
Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library
Main Russian Information Resources Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Research Labs, Institutes and Scientific Centers of RAS are Sources of Data ( 400+ Institutes) Russian Academy of Science Library: 20 M items, it has 40+ branches Natural Science Library: 15 M items, it has about 100 branches Social Sciences Library of the RAS: 13.5 M items Archives of RAS
Main Russian Information Resources Universities (600+) Universities research labs and centers: (experimental raw data, research results) Libraries: Lomonosov Moscow State University Scientific Library: 8.5 M items St.-Petersburg State University Scientific Library: 6.7 M items Bauman Moscow State Technical University Scientific Library: 2.4 M items Kazan State University Scientific Library: 4.8 M items
Main Russian Information Resources Publishers Large Russian Encyclopedia (30 items) Sectoral Encyclopedias Museum Collections Communities, Institutions Data Repositories Scientific Periodicals (newspapers, magazines)
Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library Goals Archiving and preservation of libraries collections Creating and maintaining the digital libraries collections Associating different types of digital resources stored in digital repositories in order to extract further data and meaning Bridging research and education Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library is intended to be a contributing partner in Worldwide efforts towards making knowledge free
Primary Sources Experimental raw data, research results Books Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library Manuscripts, historic and documentary materials Photos, musical scores, printed arts Cartographic information editions and maps Specialized collections of microforms and microfiches Various multimedia editions In our stock: Ancient manuscripts (the Egyptian papyruses -10 century B.C.) The earliest Russian printed book (1556)
Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library Collaboration Russian Academy of Sciences Libraries are currently the major collaborators in the project We are planning to get a few thousand books digitized every month from the all scanning points These Libraries cooperate by contributing their collections to the Digital Library and making them available free of charge to anyone
Russian Scientific Heritage Digital Library Fundamental modules The Digital Assets Factory (source-holders) The Digital Assets Keeper (JSCC) The Sources and Users Interface (JSCC)
Russian Sciences Heritage Digital Library It has to provide: Efficient searching and retrieval Easy access to the federated information resources stored in data repositories Publishing and printing

National Portal for Science, Education and Culture
National Portal for Science, Education and Culture Objective reality During its history Russia has created a great number of cultural and scientific values that are part and parcel of world culture There are a lot of primary data sources in digital form (digital repositories) created by libraries, museums, archives, publishing houses, research centers Technology solutions for generating and maintaining digital repositories are available Internet infrastructure in Russia is growing up Russia is a part of international Internet community
National Portal for Science, Education and Culture Information Structure Large Russian Encyclopedia is a Kernel of the Portal ( it consists of generalized abstracts) Sectoral Encyclopedias, Periodicals, Monographs are the next level Primary sources of data (experimental row data, social sciences data ) are on the ground level Cross references between sources levels provide information aggregate and combine process in order to generate and share knowledge
National Portal for Science, Education and Culture Goals Integration Source-holder s Content (Digital Repositories) Create and maintain Digital Repositories Support education and scientific process Provide access to Scientific and Cultural Heritage of Russia Improve interest to Russian Science, Education and Culture
National Portal for Science, Education and Culture We would like to see it as: An integrated information Space for Research and Education A bridge across multidisciplinary Communities Tools for Interconnections and access to distributed information resources An access to Russian Scientific and Cultural Heritage A part of Global Virtual Research and Education Communities A contribution partner in Worldwide efforts towards making knowledge free
