Program Auf dem Strom D 943... Franz Schubert (text by Ludwig Rellstab) Albumblatt... Johannes Brahms Trio in E flat Op. 40 for violin, horn and piano... Johannes Brahms Personnel Andrew Karr, horn Ruthie Nelson, soprano Carolyn Stuart, violin Dharshini Tambiah, piano

Auf dem Strom by Ludwig Rellstab (1799-1860) Take the last parting kiss, and the wavy greeting that I'm still sending ashore before you turn your feet and leave! Already the waves of the stream are pulling briskly at my boat, yet my tear-dimmed gaze keeps being tugged back by longing! And so the waves bear me forward with unsympathetic speed. Ah, the fields have already disappeared where I once discovered her! Blissful days, you are eternally past! Hopelessly my lament echoes around my fair homeland, where I found her love. See how the shore dashes past; yet how drawn I am to cross: Ah, before that dark wasteland far from every smiling coast, where no island can be seen - oh how I'm gripped with trembling horror! Gently bringing tears of grief, songs from the shore can no longer reach me; only a storm, blowing coldly from there, can cross the grey, heaving sea! If my longing eyes, surveying the shore, can no longer glimpse it, then I will gaze upward to the stars into that sacred distance! Ah, beneath their placid light I once called her mine; there perhaps, o comforting future! there perhaps I shall meet her gaze. I'm pulled by unnameable bonds to land there by that little hut and to linger there beneath the foliage; but the waves of the river hurry me onward without rest, leading me out to the sea! Biographies Highly sought after as a soloist and chamber musician, soprano Ruthie Nelson has captivated critics and audiences alike. Ms. Nelson was the winner of the 2011 St. Petersburg Opera "Opera Idol" competition, and was also named the Florida Female Vocalist of the Year by the Florida Federation of Music Clubs. Nelson is currently working on her Masters in Music in Vocal Performance at the University of South Florida studying with Dr. Brad Diamond. She graduated summa cum laude from The University of South Florida with a BA in music education in 2007, studying with Annetta Monroe. Currently, Nelson is on the voice faculty at the College of Central Florida, is teaching voice as a graduate student at USF, has a private voice studio, and is a soloist at the First Presbyterian Church of Tampa. Violinist Carolyn Stuart has been acclaimed as a performer of astonishing effectiveness, radiant inspiration, deep sensitivity, and colossal temperament (Musical Horizons). Recent highlights have included chamber music and recital engagements in New York, London, Amsterdam, Dublin, Groningen, Toronto, Paris, Sofia, Athens, Vicenza, Florence, Aarhus, and Zurich. Praised by American Record Guide as the Critic s Choice, her most recent CD release, American Flute Quintets features the world-premiere recording of Joan Tower s Rising with preeminent flutist Carol Wincenc and the Green Mountain Chamber Music Players. Along with duo partner pianist Svetozar Ivanov, she has also recently released a Gega New CD dedicated to the rarely performed music of the repressed Soviet composer Nikolai Roslavets. According to Fanfare, Stuart and Ivanov explore the shifting, gauzy textures of an intensely expressive salon style, with Stuart deploying the tonal resources of her instrument in stratospheric soaring climaxes. Andrew Karr, Instructor of horn at the University of South Florida, is currently Assistant Principal Horn of The Florida Orchestra. Prior to that, he was acting co-principal horn of the Florida Orchestra and was principal horn of the Shanghai Philharmonic, the only non-chinese member in that orchestra for much of his tenure there. A native of the Boston area, he attended the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and received further professional training at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, where he also studied conducting privately with famed American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. He has been heard as a soloist or principal horn with orchestras in over 25 countries on four continents in some of the most famous concert venues in the world. He is also noted as an educator and has spent parts of the last two winters teaching in Afghanistan and the summer of 2008 teaching in Iraq, an experience which was recorded in the award-winning documentary "Camp Unity".

British pianist Dharshini Tambiah's recent solo engagements include two recitals at Carnegie Hall s Weill Recital Hall, a recital at the Esterhazy Palace in Austria as part of the International Haydn Festival, recitals at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London and also at the Philomuse Association of France in Paris. Dharshini's studies included many years of private study with renowned pianist Phyllis Sellick, and advanced postgraduate study at the Royal College of Music in London from whence she graduated with a Distinction. Dharshini has given a number of World Premieres, including the premiere of 'Ballade', a new work for solo piano by Augusta Read Thomas, which she will be recording next year. In addition to being a frequent performer, Dharshini is also a keen musicologist and is currently finishing her PhD dissertation on the music of American composer and pianist, Robert Helps. Dharshini is a member of the piano faculty at the University of South Florida.
