MPB Kids Club Writers Contest Submission for 2016 Complete and Official Rules By submitting the minor s written story, (hereinafter, Artwork/Story ), to Mississippi Public Broadcasting, (hereinafter, MPB ), for the 2016 MPB Kids Club Writers Contest (hereinafter, Contest ) I, as the legal guardian of minor child, agree to the official and complete contest rules contained herein and below. Eligibility & Entry Guidelines Entrants must be a member of the MPB Kids Club. To join the MPB Kids Club please visit www.mpbonline.org/kids or select the option on the contest Entry Form. Only one entry per person will be accepted in this Contest; all subsequent entries will be disqualified. Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories). Stories can be fact or fiction, and prose or poetry. Word Count Requirement Kindergarten and first grade stories must have a minimum of 50 words and a maximum of 200 words. Second and third grade stories must have a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 350 words. Fourth and Fifth grade stories must have a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 450 words. The word count includes a, an, and the, but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those that enhance the illustrations. Text must be printed or written legibly or typed.

Children who cannot write may dictate their story to be printed, written legibly or typed. Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on separate pages. Non-English text must be translated on the same page and the translated text (English text) must adhere to word count. Invented spelling is accepted. Format & Illustrations Stories must have at least 5 original, clear and colorful illustrations. Original art can include drawings, digital images, painting or watercolors. The use of glue, glitter, tape, foam stickers, staples, jewels, ribbons or materials that stand out from the page (i.e. 2-D or 3-D images) are not allowed. Stories submitted by mail must be created on one side of the paper and numbered on the back of each page. Official Entry Form Each entry must include the official MPB Kids Club Writers Contest Entry Form, with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the optional signature of the sponsoring teacher), consenting to allowing their child/ward to enter the Contest, confirming that the story and art are original, and granting certain rights to the entry materials. The entry form must be complete and legible to be eligible. Judging, Awards & Notification All entries submitted in the judging round of the contest will be judged using the judging criteria and percentages below by a panel of judges chosen by MPB. The entry with the highest percentage in each grade will be deemed the grand prize winner for that grade. Judging will occur on or about April 25th. The judging round of the Contest shall be scored and graded using a rubric based on the following criteria as follows: 40% Creativity and originality of plot and/or themes,

40% Story structure and use of literary devices, 20% Relevance, quality and originality of illustrations All decisions of the judges are final and binding and not subject to appeal or review. In the event of a tie for the judging round of the Contest, the entry with the highest score in the creativity and originality category from among all tying entries will be deemed the winner. Winners will be notified on or before May 2, 2016. Each grand prize winner s entry may be posted on the Contest Web site at www.mpbonline.org/kids. Privacy: Unless otherwise specified, any and all information collected in connection with this Contest will be used by MPB solely for the purpose of administering the Contest. Sponsor: MPB (3825 Ridgewood Rd. Jackson, MS 39211). Eligibility. Contest participation is open to children in Kindergarten through 5 th grade, as of April 15, 2016, who are currently domiciled within the state of Mississippi. Immediate family members and/or children living within the household of any person currently employed by MPB, the Board of Directors of MPB, The Foundation for Public Broadcasting in Mississippi and/or the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Public Broadcasting in Mississippi are not eligible to participate in this Contest. An immediate family member shall be that of a spouse, parent, child, sibling or any other person residing within the residence of the child. Entries failing to meet this criteria shall be immediately disqualified from judging. Dates of Entry. Artwork/Stories will be accepted by MPB between the dates of Monday, February 23, 2016, and ending no later than midnight on Friday, April 15, 2016. To be considered, all Artwork/Stories must be officially submitted by mail. Entries must be submitted and postmarked by April 15, 2016, or earlier date. Entries postmarked after April 15, 2016, shall not be deemed timely submitted or considered in this contest. kids.club@mpbonline.org. Only the following formats shall be accepted for electronic submissions: pdf, jpeg, gif, or bmp. Selection of Winners and Judging Criteria. Winners will be selected out of the pool of overall entrants to the Contest who properly entered. Winners will be notified via phone and/or email during the month of May 2016. Winners shall be selected by a panel of judges chosen by MPB staff. The criteria used in the selection of the winners shall include, but not be limited to, compliance with the guidelines for entry, as stated above, overall creativity, originality, story structure, use of literacy devices and quality of illustrations. MPB shall award the following prizes: Each grade level prize package: First Place - $100 Prize Package Second Place - $75 Prize Package Third Place - $50 Prize Package No Compensation. You agree and understand you will not receive compensation of any kind for the submission and/or subsequent use of Artwork/Stories, outside of any prize which might be awarded. License/Permission. By submitting your Artwork/Stories, you grant to MPB and its designated agents a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, and unconditional limited license worldwide in perpetuity to post and to make, have made, use, copy, reproduce, modify, publicly display, import, broadcast, transmit, and otherwise distribute (directly or indirectly), in whole or in part, in any media now known or hereinafter created, in connection with the advertising, promotion and marketing of MPB in any medium whatsoever, in perpetuity, even though you may not be ultimately chosen as a winner in this contest. Original Artwork/Stories. You certify the submitted entry is original artwork and the original story does not infringe on any copyright, right of privacy, or right of publicity, and that it does not contain any libelous or scandalous material, or legal or moral rights of any third party, living or deceased. You represent and warrant the Artwork/Story is not unlawful and does not contain, facilitate, reference, or use material that is fraudulent, inappropriate, indecent, lewd, pornographic, obscene, hateful, tortious, defamatory, slanderous, or libelous.

Artwork Will Not Be Returned. You acknowledge your entry will not be returned regardless of whether or not your Artwork/Story is chosen to win one of the prizes as part of the Contest. Use of Personal Information and Credit. You understand any personal information you provide to MPB is for the purpose of enabling MPB to identify the Artwork/Story and to notify you, if necessary. If the Artwork/Story is used, you will receive proper credit identifying you as the submitter of the Artwork/Story. Limitation of MPB s Liability. You acknowledge and agree MPB shall not be liable for any loss or damage incurred in connection with the Kids Club Writers Contest, including delivery or storage of the Artwork/Story. Legal Guardian Status. You warrant you are the Legal Guardian(s) for minor child and/or have permission from the Legal Guardian(s) to submit this entry. You warrant you are an individual(s) over the age of 18 years with full power and valid authority to enter into this agreement and Contest on behalf of Minor. The undersigned further agrees and warrants the above-mentioned Minor, will not disaffirm or disavow this consent and permission on the ground that the Minor was a minor on the date of entry into the Contest or any similar grounds whatsoever, or endeavor to recover from MPB or any of its directors, officers, employees or other associated persons, or through any guardian, any sums for participating in the Contest. No Obligation to Use. You understand MPB is under no obligation to select the Artwork/Story submitted, and you understand MPB is not responsible for the nonselection of the Artwork/Story or any other prospective issues associated with the nonselection of the Artwork/Story. Termination or Change to Contest Rules. MPB reserves the right to terminate or modify this Contest and Contest Rules at any time for any reason. In such circumstances, a winner will be selected based on entries received to date of termination. MPB also reserves the right to modify this Contest in the event an insufficient number of entries are received and/or an insufficient number of entries meet the minimum judging criteria. Agreement. By entering this Contest, you warrant and represent you are free to grant to MPB all rights described in this Contest and possess all rights necessary for the grant of the terms outlined herein. Mississippi Law shall govern this Agreement, and Mississippi shall have sole jurisdiction and venue to resolve disputes related to this Contest.
