JAZZ AT THE LOGAN CONTINUES TO ENHANCE LOCAL SCENE WITH 3 RD SEASON OF DIVERSE, POTENT PROGRAMMING: Highlights include Miguel Zenón Residency, Laura Nyro Project, Acclaimed Vocalists, and Jazz Partnerships FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 10, 2015 PHOTOS Please visit https://goo.gl/photos/cbb73ydm4z2tpvg87 PRESS CONTACT Amy Iwano Executive Director University of Chicago Presents Iwano@uchicago.edu 773.702.8068 CHICAGO - The University of Chicago Presents, the University's professional music presenting organization, proudly showcases another season of acclaimed jazz headliners across a range of stylistic influences in Jazz at the Logan's 2015-16 season. We are thrilled to continue a diversity of programming that offers more than a jazz club experience and yet feels equally intimate in the beautiful Logan Center venues. Given the level of world-class talent, audiences connect and are truly moved, says Amy Iwano, Executive Director of UChicago Presents. From the consummate Cécile McLorin Salvant, to Billy Childs and his significant Reimagining Laura Nyro project, to the Chicago debut of virtuoso vibraphonist Warren Wolf, Caribbean-infused Dion Parson s 21 st Century Band and a residency with the masterfully creative saxophonist Miguel Zenón, it is a rich and exciting season ahead, Iwano commented. The season begins Friday, October 23 with the award-winning, theatrical Salvant, continues November 5 with Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro with Billy Childs Quintet, Becca Stevens, Alicia Olatuja, and Spektral Quartet, resumes February 12 with Warren Wolf and Wolfpack, and is rounded out by musical artists with island and Puerto Rican influences. GRAMMY-winning drummer Dion Parson and his seven-piece 21 st Century Band perform a special blend of Caribbean jazz on April 29. In May, Miguel Zenón begins a three-day residency, including an event with the city s Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center and culminating in a performance with Identities Big Band at the Logan Center on May 26. With expansive, quality programming, critical acclaim has accompanied popular response to the series. As Howard Reich for the Chicago Tribune states, the sprawling arts center that the University of Chicago opened in 2012 has become an increasingly important player in Chicago jazz." In partnership with the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts and the Jazz Institute of Chicago, Jazz at the Logan presents CHICAGO STAGE at the Logan showcasing local jazz artists in free pre-concert performances. We are thrilled to once again be partnering with UChicago Presents and the Jazz Institute of Chicago to present the Jazz at Logan Series and Chicago Stage performances, said Bill Michel, Executive Director of

the Logan Center for the Arts. Not only are we able to celebrate the talents of national and local musicians, but through a range of partnerships we are inviting youth and other members of the Chicago community to actively engage with these musicians through workshops and listening sessions. I am pleased that the Series has become an important contributor to the vibrant music scene on the Southside, throughout Chicago, and beyond. Details follow. 2015-16 SCHEDULE: JAZZ AT THE LOGAN SERIES FRIDAY / OCTOBER 23 / 7:30 PM / PERFORMANCE HALL, LOGAN Julie and Parker Hall Annual Jazz Concert Cécile McLorin Salvant Following her first place win at the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, Cécile McLorin Salvant has dazzled wherever she performs. Says The New York Times, If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald it is this 23-year-old virtuoso. Salvant and her trio perform works from her new CD, For One To Love. She has poise, elegance, soul, humor, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace. Wynton Marsalis THURSDAY / NOVEMBER 5 / 7:30 PM / PERFORMANCE HALL, LOGAN Billy Childs Quintet with Becca Stevens, Alicia Olatuja, and Spektral Quartet Billy Childs, piano Becca Stevens and Alicia Olatuja, vocals Bob Sheppard, alto sax and flute Peter Sprague, guitar Carol Robbins, harp Ben Williams, bass Billy Kilson, drums Spektral Quartet 6:30 pre-concert conversation with Billy Childs and Travis Jackson Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro 2

Pianist/composer Billy Childs remains one of the most diversely prolific and acclaimed artists working in music today. He brings his latest project of music inspired by singersongwriter Laura Nyro to the Logan Center. Billy Child s creative magnitude seems to be that of a brilliant, powerful star suspended in the night sky of that same territory, illuminating the way. Allaboutjazz.com Brilliant, catchy Intimate, ruminative, jagged-edged originals with bouncy time signatures, rich with harmony and melody. DownBeat on Becca Stevens "Ms. Olatuja is an American singer with a strong, lustrous tone and an amiably regal presence onstage." The New York Times FRIDAY / FEBRUARY 12 / 7:30 PM / PERFORMANCE HALL, LOGAN Warren Wolf & Wolfpack Warren Wolf, vibraphone and keyboard Allyn Johnson, piano Kris Funn, bass CV Dashiell, drums Following in the footsteps of vibes masters Bobby Hutcherson and Stefon Harris, the phenomenal multi-instrumentalist Warren Wolf is one of the most important and exciting young jazz artists performing today. Steeped in tradition with a progressive eye toward the evolving art form, Wolf makes his Chicago debut as a leader of his quintet, the Wolfpack. One could hear how a classical quotation could be turned, as easily as blues changes, into a muscular jazz improvisation. City Paper FRIDAY / APRIL 29 / 7:30 PM/ PERFORMANCE HALL, LOGAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS Dion Parson and the 21 st Century Band Dion Parson, drums Ron Blake, sax Rashawn Ross, trumpet Reuben Rogers, bass Carlton Holmes, piano Victor Provost, steel pan Alioune Faye, percussion/sabar drum Led by GRAMMY award-winning drummer Dion Parson, making his Chicago debut as a leader, this 7-piece band features a fresh, innovative sound mixing US Virgin Islands traditions with other Caribbean infusions like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel 3

pan, chutney, and funk with New Orleans and African overtones. Together, these supremely talented artists deliver their special brand of Caribbean jazz with down-home sophistication and a high energy level that has audiences young and old soaring to their feet time and time again. A core group of talented musicians who use the complex improvisational techniques and instrumental voicing of jazz to explore new musical territory.
