Configuring Ex Libris Primo for JSTOR: A Quick Reference Guide All content on JSTOR is indexed in the Primo Central Index, including archival journals, current journals, and books. For these content types, Primo indexes metadata, article abstracts, and book summaries, as well as the full text of all books on JSTOR. To ensure that your use of licensed JSTOR content is optimized in Primo, you will need to: 1. Activate the JSTOR collections that you license using the Primo Central registration system. 2. Check your link resolver configurations to ensure that they accurately reflect your licensed JSTOR content. 3. Check other Primo configuration options. Read on for further details on these steps. Important Note: This guide has been developed to help libraries configure the Primo discovery service to most effectively leverage their investment in content on the JSTOR platform. Our research shows that the appropriate configuration of Primo is an important determinant in the discoverability of the content your library licenses from JSTOR. Further, our research indicates that prioritizing direct links to JSTOR within the Primo administrative module is the best way to ensure your users connect reliably to JSTOR. We encourage you to strongly consider reviewing the priority of direct links to JSTOR (described later in the document) so that your library can better leverage its investment in the content it licenses from JSTOR. Activate the JSTOR Collections You License Primo allows you to select from the large number of collections indexed in Primo Central. Your licensed JSTOR collections must be activated specifically in the Primo Central registration system from the My Profile page. EBSCO LinkSource 1

You may also activate other JSTOR collections that you do not license. However, if users are directed to these unlicensed items on JSTOR, they will be notified that the content is not provided by their library. The JSTOR collections available for selection in Primo are shown below. The following JSTOR Primary Source Collections have not yet been made available by JSTOR for indexing by Primo. African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes Global Plants (formerly JSTOR Plant Sciences) Struggles for Freedom in South Africa To add or remove a collection, go to Edit Client Resources on My Profile, where you can check and uncheck the relevant collections. Please note that it may take up to a week for the changes to take effect. Configure Your Link Resolver to Work Effectively with Primo To link from items in Primo to the full text on JSTOR, you should configure your OpenURL link resolver to reflect the JSTOR collections you subscribe to. For help configuring your link resolver, refer to the relevant JSTOR reference guide. Review Primo Configuration Options and Search Features Primo Item Availability Indicator The availability indicator on JSTOR items in Primo is determined by the OpenURL link resolver configuration. The link resolver configurations are transferred from your link resolver to Primo via a Google Scholar holdings file. This is done regardless of the link resolver used. Customers must enter the path to their Google Scholar holdings file in the Institutional holdings file URL field this is found on the Edit Client Resources page of My Profile. Primo processes the Google Scholar holdings file on a weekly basis to update the Primo item availability status. Configuring JSTOR collections in the Ex Libris Primo discovery service: a quick reference guide 2

Note that if you do not create a Google Scholar holdings file from your link resolver, item availability will not be shown in Primo. Search Scope Libraries may choose one of two options for the presentation of search results: 1. As default, show all results from Primo collections that have been activated by the library. The user can then limit the result set to show only those items that are available online or in the library. 2. As default, show users only those items available online or in the library. The user can then expand the result set to see all items. The latter option is recommended so that the user does not see a number of items with a No Full Text indicator. Full Text for Books at JSTOR Full text for the Books at JSTOR collection is searched automatically, together with the metadata, if this collection is activated in Primo. Record De-Duplication Primo detects and marks duplicate records that match on core fields, such as title, author, date, volume, and issue. Only one result is shown in the list of brief results with an indication that there are duplicates. If you do not see a JSTOR record displayed in the Primo brief results list, it may be shown when you click on the option to View all versions. This will show all duplicates for a given item. Facets To see only JSTOR items in a Primo results list, select the appropriate JSTOR entry from the collections facet. The available options are: 1. JSTOR (this option is for archival journals only) 2. JSTOR Current Journals 3. JSTOR Books 4. JSTOR Primary Sources. * Public Library Collections Collection I includes all Arts & Sciences collections and the Business IV Collection. Collection II includes all archival Life Sciences content on JSTOR (including the Life Sciences Collection and the Ecology & Botany II Collection). Collection III includes all primary source collections on JSTOR: Global Plants, Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa, African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes, and 19th-Century British Pamphlets. ** Early Journal Content is not actually a JSTOR collection. In 2011, JSTOR made journal content published prior to 1923 in the United States, and prior to 1870 elsewhere, freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. See http://about.jstor.org/service/early-journal-content-0. ***Discipline packages of Current Scholarship titles In 2011-2013, JSTOR sold collections of Current Scholarship titles aligned to the Arts & Sciences I through XII Archive Collections. JSTOR no longer offers these collections. Discovery partners may retain these as targets if this helps their customers. JSTOR continues to offer Current Scholarship titles grouped by discipline. KBART-compliant title lists are at http://about.jstor.org/content/jstor-title-lists. **** No metadata are available at this time. *****The Sustainability Collections Sets are not comprised of books with publication dates from a given year or given set of years. For example, Sustainability I might have a book with a publication date of 2005. For all other collections (except Sustainability 2), all the books in the set have the publications year or years that are in the name of the set. ******This is not the name of an actual collection, just a convenient target for libraries who mass order Books at JSTOR. 1) There is no product called JSTOR Complete, but some providers add it as a target for the convenience of librarians. We recommend that it not be used, since there is no simple way to define what products would be covered by this label. 2) JSTOR also offers several information services for individuals, which can be seen at http://about.jstor.org/individuals. of these offerings should appear in partners linking and discovery services.
