LET THE BODIES HIT THE LOOR or amliied chamer ensemle Dmitri Tymoczko 10 Woolorth Center Princeton, N 05 dmitri@rinceton.edu music.rinceton.edu/~dmitri

Let the Bodies Hit the loor is a dialogue eteen live singer and recorded voices, mainly o a soldier descriing the 200 attack on alluah. The singer s ords are a mashu o World War I-related material, including to military songs ( The Bells o Hell and Hanging on the Old Bared Wire ), and to oems (Siegried Sassoon s Suicide in the Trenches, and Roert rost's Not to Kee ). At the end, the soldier s voice is relaced ith an inhuman voice reading a Dadaistic collage ormed out o a numer o ar oems, including those heard earlier. Several o the texts deal ith the relation eteen music and comat, and the iece is in some ay aout the interaction eteen the theatricalized violence o music articularly heavy metal and the literal violence o ar. There s also a suterranean narrative running throughout: e hear a soldier recounting attle, e give thanks that he s returned saely, and e gradually realize that he s een (sychically, not hysically) ounded. The music ends ith a conversation in hich the soldier tries, haltingly, to exlain hat he exerienced. The iece is ritten or Neseak, an eight-iece amliied chamer ensemle: ass clarinet, violin, cello, electric guitar, virahone, drums, singer, and synthesizer laying oth electric organ sounds and samles. The ass clarinet art uses a digital delay, the cello and guitar arts use a harmonizer, and the electric guitar art uses distortion. The eects are otional, excet or the guitar s distortion ox. I the clarinetist decides to omit the delay, it may e ossile to simulate the eect in some assages. The keyoardist lays on to keyoards, one roducing an electric-organ sound and the other controlling the samles. There is also a single-keyoard version availale. The drum notation is as ollos: Please email me (dmitri@rinceton.edu) i you ind anything conusing or unreasonaly diicult! htt://music.rinceton.edu/~dmitri/odies.d (ull score) htt://music.rinceton.edu/~dmitri/odies.m (cheesy MIDI recording)
