Everything that happens in the world has a cause and an effect. A cause is the reason something happened. Ask yourself, What made this thing happen? The answer is the cause. An effect is the result or outcome of something happening. Ask yourself, What happened because of this thing? The answer is the effect. Causes The Titanic was constructed poorly. The Titanic was traveling too fast. The Titanic hit an iceberg. Event The Titanic sank Effects 1.500 people died. Air travel gained in popularity. S.O.S. became the official international distress call. Each of the causes helped make the event happen. Each of the effects might not have occurred without the event happening. 3 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)

Now, see if you can come up with your own examples. Complete the chart below as shown in the example. Cause Effect Result a general effect I kicked the ball. I scored a goal. We won the game. I studied my vocab list. I scored 100 on my vocab quiz. The cat scratched me. I got blood on my shirt. I was very tired. I woke up refreshed. I fell out of the tree. I bought a lottery ticket. I threw up. TIME TO THINK! WHAT LINKING WORDS COULD WE USE TO COMBINE THESE SENTENCES? Let s try some : 4 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)

When writing a Cause and Effect essay, you need to use linking words to tie together ideas and facts. For instance: I am teaching you Cause and Effect writing; therefore, I will teach you linking words and phrases as well. Linking words show you the link between a cause and an event, or between an event and an effect. In the example sentence above, therefore is the linking word between the event and the effect. Calvin pushes down the lever; therefore, the toaster heats up. As a result, the bread is toasted. Now you write! Can you think of other linking words that you can use? 5 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)

CAUSE AND EFFECT WRITING LINKING WORDS & PHRASES Below is a list of linking words and phrases for you to use in your writing. My mom came into the room to tell us we had to go to sleep. It was dark, so, Karen and I took my dad s flashlight and played under the covers. I m not sure when we finally fell asleep, but we left the flashlight on. In the morning, it no longer worked. The batteries were dead. Yesterday, there was a big thunderstorm and we lost our electricity. Dad went to get his flashlight so we could see, but it didn t work. He wasn t very happy when he found out that I had left it on all night and wasted the batteries. Now I have to rake up all of the leaves that blew around from the storm! In the middle column, add a linking word to connect the cause and effect in the row. Cause Linking Word or Phrase Effect my mom came in to tell us to go to bed. It was dark... the flashlight batteries died. we lost electricity. Dad tried to use the flashlight, but it didn t work... 7 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)

Below is a Cause and Effect Essay, written by a high school student from the United States. DATE: Read the essay. 1) CIRCLE the thesis statement. 2) UNDERLINE all the effects mentioned. 3) COLOR the linking words / phrases. There have been numerous campaigns recently communicating the deadly consequences of cigarette smoking. But a threat to health doesn t seem to be a good enough reason for people to quit anymore. People somehow block themselves off and ignore all the information that is given to them on the dangers of smoking. The purpose of this essay is to discuss three effects of cigarette smoking, aside from the broadly mentioned possibility of developing cancer or dying. These effects are the smell of smoke, the stained teeth, and the cost of doing it. The first effect of cigarette smoking, and probably the one that the non-smokers hate the most, is that it spreads everywhere. The stench of cigarette smoke is very sharp and hard to remove. Therefore, smokers usually have smelly hair, breath, clothes, and if they smoke indoors, a smelly room. Even if the person quits smoking the odor remains for a long time. The second effect of cigarette smoking is one that most people don t even take into consideration. It stains the teeth yellow or sometimes even brown. Since this effect is long term, most people are not aware of it when they begin smoking. The truth is that a cigarette stain is very hard to eliminate from the teeth, and this leads to spending a considerable amount of money. Yellow teeth are also disgusting because they give an unhygienic image and make people look older. The third effect of smoking is that it will eventually end up influencing the smoker s personal economy. Depending on the country, the prices of cigarettes can differ. But even at an affordable price the regular consumption of cigarettes will eventually take its economic toll. Due to the high prices, people will become poorer. These are only three out of many other effects that cigarette smoking can have, but to any sensible person they are more than enough to realize that smoking is bad. People can t possibly be proud of calling themselves smokers. It is terrible for health as well as personal appearance. As a result, those who live in poverty, stink of smoke, and have yellow teeth are the people who are affected the most by this life threatening activity. 10 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)

Below is a Cause and Effect Essay, written by a high school student from Mexico. Read the essay. 1) DOUBLE UNDERLINE the hook. 2) CIRCLE the thesis statement. 3) UNDERLINE every cause mentioned by the author. 4) COLOR the linking words/ phrases. Are you aware that 20 million people in Mexico live on less than two dollars a day? Sixty million people, half the Mexican population, live in poverty, and 20 million of them live in extreme poverty. Most of the time, garbage is their food, and some days, they don t even eat anything. This critical situation in Mexico is caused by individual and geographic factors. The purpose of this essay is to analyze these two main causes of poverty in Mexico. The first and immediate cause of poverty in Mexico is the individual condition. This means the circumstances and characteristics of poor people. For example, an individual s education, skill, intelligence, health, and prejudice all have an influence on poverty. The lack of education is one of the most significant factors that contributes to poverty. Therefore, there is no access to good jobs for non-educated people. The second cause of poverty has to do with geography. For example, statistics show that people who live in rural areas far away from the cities are poorer. This is caused by the lack of communication and transportation in remote rural areas. Because of this, governments can t provide essential services such as drinkable water, affordable food, health care, and education. Consequently, people who live there are totally isolated from the rest of the society. Unless the Mexican government works to improve individual conditions and geographic factors of the poor, the problem is going to get worse. Nobody likes to see poor children eating out of garbage cans. Mexico needs a new plan designed by Mexican economists and politicians, people who are committed to Mexico and to the future Glossary odor = smell stain = permanent mark or discoloration economic toll = effect on money poverty = poorness; state of being poor lack = low amount remote = far away; hard to reach rural = far outside the city essential = required; much-needed prejudice = unfair judging stench = awful smell 11 071-eng-wb-t3-(Cause and Effect)
