Frequently asked questions: Can we change our piece or pieces? No. We send a complete list of competitors with the pieces to our adjudicators before the festival, to make sure we have allotted sufficient time to adjudicate each class. Any changes would affect the adjudicator's preparation and time line. We also print the list of pieces in our program. Can we change our scheduled time? No. All class timings are worked out by how much time each piece takes to perform and to adjudicate. There are no extra time slots for adjudicating during the day that have not been allocated. What happens if we show up late - will the student still be permitted to play? If you show up late for your class and the adjudicator has not started to adjudicate the class, you will be able to perform your piece, however if the adjudicator has started the adjudication of the other performers you will not be able to perform and there is no way to make up the missed class. How do we advance to playoffs? Play-offs will be for Intermediate and Senior Piano. To be able to play in the playoffs you have to: 1 - Compete in a minimum of two classes or in one Concert Class. 2 - Place first in one of your classes or in a Concert Class. 3 - Achieve a mark of 80% or more. (If your score is below 80% you will not be able to compete in the play-offs) 4 - The piece you played in the class in which you won first place, is the one you will play in the play-offs. Who decides the winners? Primary and Junior awards are decided by the adjudicator. Intermediates and seniors are required to compete in play offs. Each student is given a mark on their performance in the play-off classes and all awards are presented according to those marks - please note these marks are not given out to the teachers or students. How do we find out if we have won an award? At the end of the play-off classes the Festival Committee will have a meeting. They will contact your teacher if you have won an award and if you will perform at the final concert. This will take a few days. Abbotsford Music Festival 2018 5

She has been a BC Registered Music Teacher for the past 30 years and served several terms on the South Fraser branch executive council and festival committees. In an attempt to make music accessible and affordable to her local community, Catherine has also hosted more than 35 house concerts in her home featuring performing artists from universities and music schools. Catherine is a member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators Association and has given classes and workshops throughout the province. She is also a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music, College of Examiners, and presently maintains a private studio in Surrey, BC. In the mid 1990's Mr. Duerksen learned the 32 sonatas of Beethoven and performed many of them, as well as piano concertos 3 and 4. His six-year collaboration with baritone Glen Harder culminated with an invitation to perform Schubert's Die Winterreise at the 1993 International Schubert Conference and Festival at the University of Victoria. He performs regularly with musicians from the VSO. He has made recordings for CBC radio and is also an accomplished organist. Bernard Duerksen is a graduate of UBC with a M.Mus degree, and is on faculty at the VSO School of Music. He has been actively teaching and adjudicating for 35 years and his students have won many awards and scholarships. Duerksen s students have played in masterclasses for John Kimura Parker, Louis Lortie, Stephen Hough, Yefim Bronfman, Jeffrey Kahane, Joyce Yang and Angela Cheng. Noted pedagogue, Edward Parker stated Bernard Duerksen can teach anything to anybody. Fun facts: Bernard Duerksen is an avid runner and placed fourth in the Terry Fox run in 1998. In 2012, Mr. Duerksen was the hand double for John Lithgow playing Bach in the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Abbotsford Music Festival 2018 16 Joseph Elworthy has been a featured soloist, recitalist, and chamber music performer on such stages as Alice Tully Hall, Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, and Sejong Hall. Mr. Elworthy is a graduate of Yale University where he was the recipient of the Aldo Parisot Yo-Yo Ma Prize the highest honour issued by Yale to a graduating cellist. Joseph has been a visiting artist at the Beijing Conservatory, Harvard University, Royal Northern College of Music, Glenn Gould School, and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Joseph Elworthy co-founded the Koerner Piano Trio, the first chamber ensemble in residence at the Vancouver Academy of Music. In 2013, Mr. Elworthy was appointed as Western Music Advisor for the newly established Haw Par Music Foundation a collaborative educational initiative linking Vancouver and Hong Kong. Joseph Elworthy was a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for 12 years before retiring from the orchestra in 2014. Joseph plays on a rare Ferdinando Gagliano circa 1760 that once belonged to the legendary German cellist, Hugo Becker.
