Cleary Our favourite tip and the winner of our latest prize is After cleaning your glass shower screen, treat it with car wax. You will have to clean it much less often as it takes longer for limescale or soap scum to build up again. C. Feehan Enlightened reading To celebrate the annual Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards, we talked to Irish author Mary Costello. Her book Academy Street won the 2014 Irish Novel of the Year & Bord Gáis Energy Book of the Year. 1. How does it feel to be the winner of the Bord Gáis Energy Book of the Year? It s an enormous honour, and I m immensely grateful. I was thrilled to win the Novel of the Year category, let alone the overall Book of the Year. 2. What is the most challenging part of writing your first novel? I suppose, as with all writing, the initial challenge is hitting on the right voice. The language of a child is fairly simple but a child s view and vision is not. Finding the right pace to let a woman s entire life unfold was also a challenge. But having a voice that seemed to fit was a huge help. In a way, the character of Tess led me through her life. 3. Do you have any advice for people who dream of writing a book? Try to find your own voice and not follow trends or fashions. Read your favourite writers and persevere. 4. What s your favourite book of all time? Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. But my favourite book often changes. 5. Who would be in your dream book club? (Influences, celebrities etc.) A few friends who love books and have great intellects. Anyone famous or infamous, quiet or gregarious who loves books and has enthusiasm and verve and passion. 8 Bord Gáis Energy At home Bord Gáis Energy At home 9
