BACKGROUND OF LIBRARIES IN BRUNEI Dewan dan Pustaka Brunei Darussalam established in 1961 under Education Department (now Ministry of Education) to implement the Constitution of Brunei 1959 Chapter 82 (i) and Amendment 2004: The official language is Malay Language and should be written with the letter specified by law

Library Service was introduced in 1963. At an early stage, the establishment of this library is to facilitate the reading materials to officers and staff in the ministry of education, then opened to the public on August 24, 1967

An effort to meet its obligations for the empowerment of the Malay language and reading culture in the country, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka focuses on four (4) key areas, namely: Language Literature Publishing Library

EMPOWERING READING CULTURE His Majesty s Titah: According to a study, there are developing countries where the reading population only read as much as one line a year and at most half a page in a year. While people in developed countries read only one page a year. As for us (Bruneians), although there are no studies, we may just be in the one line a year category or not more than one line a year. If this is so, it is the country s responsibility to ensure that the people are truly knowledgeable through education and reading, Projects and programmes to address this must be prepared and a strong reading culture must be prioritized in the country s development programmes The Opening Ceremony Of Majlis Ilmu 2011 in conjunction with His Majesty's 65th Birthday 24 Syaaban 1432/26 Julai 2011

BRUNEI BOOK FAIR The Brunei Book Fair theme: The Book is the Future Posts visitors recorded in 2013 was 82.221 compared to the year 2012 a total of 81.883 people.

The Library conducted two activities for school children in Year 4 and Year 7 as follows: Mari Adik Baca (Year 4) Pintar Eja Jawi (Year 7)

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT B$450,000.00 budget allocation for buying books every year. In 2011, additional budget B$1.7 million had been approved for buying books This year, budget allocation for buying books has been increased to $850,000

E-LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT Wescott Company has awarded for implementing the Library System (SIRSI DYNIX). At the moment, catalog data and labeling RFID are being put into the system. The Kiosk and security gate has also been installed at Sengkurong Library, Lambak Kanan Library and Muara Library.

PUBLICATIONS One of the largest publication in Brunei Darussalam. To date, its published : 1,023 title of books since 1963. three (3) journal titles. four (4) magazine titles.

ISBN CENTRE Began 1996. Publication increased every year. Local publishers consists of Government Departments and Ministries, Higher Institutions, Non Government Sectors and Individuals. In 2012, there was 280 publishers had been applying for the ISBN number. In Mac 2012, 13 digits ISBN number has been used.

CONCLUSION Language and Literature Bureau Library always make an effort at empowering reading culture from activities and project to be held could fulfil the Wawasan negara 2035.

By having better library and services, it can provide awareness to the public about the importance of books, reading and role of libraries institution. With abundantly of reading activity, is able to create knowledgeable community, informed and educated which will contribute to national development.

Collaboration between the Ministries also can create a strategic partnership to ensure that reading culture could keep pace with educational needs and nation development.
