6 Reported Speech (Indirect Speech) A. Reporting commands We should use a verb of command (e.g. tell, order, command) + object + to-infinitive. e.g. He said, Mop the floor, Tom. He told Tom to mop the floor. B. Reporting statements We should use the reporting verbs and change the following: The tenses Direct speech simple present tense e.g. I like wine, Tim said. simple past tense e.g. Jenny said, I cleaned the toilet. Reported speech simple past tense e.g. Tim said that he liked wine. past perfect tense e.g. Jenny said that she had cleaned the toilet. (The word that can be used to introduce the reporting statement, but can also be omitted.) The pronouns e.g. Jane said, I don t like hiking. Jane said that she didn t like hiking. C. Reporting questions If the direct question begins with a question word (when, what, where, who, why, how, etc.), we use the same question word when reporting the question. The word order after the question word becomes subject + verb. e.g. He asked, Where do you live? He asked me where I lived. If there is no question word, if or whether is used. e.g. She asked, Do you speak French? She asked me if I spoke French.
