SQUADS #2 CPW20 11 th Grade English Learning Intentions - Today, I am going to address these College Readiness Standards in English: 1. Topic Development in Terms of Purpose and Focus 16-19 2. Word Choice in Terms of Style, Tone, Clarity, and Economy16-19 3. Word Choice in Terms of Style, Tone, Clarity, and Economy 20-23 4. Conventions of Usage 16-19 5. Conventions of Usage 20-23 6. Conventions of Punctuation 20-23 7. Conventions of Usage 24-27 Success Criteria I will be successful if I can correctly identify the best use of punctuation, usage, sentence purpose and focus, and word choice.

Topic Development in Terms of Purpose and Focus 16-19 1. Almost overnight the land too turns greenish. One week, seeds are sown in bare patches behind the villagers houses. The next week, just seven long rainstorms later, those same patches are gardens overrun with weeds and new leaves. Gardens are frequently used as images in world literature. B. Gardens are used as images in world literature quite frequently. C. Frequently gardens are major images in world literature. D. DELETE the underlined portion. Answer: D Rationale: This sentence needs to be deleted because it is obviously irrelevant to the rest of the essay. The essay s focus seems to be on developing the topic of gardens in terms of their lifecycle and change, not focusing on imagery in world literature.

Word Choice in Terms of Style, Tone, Clarity, and Economy16-19 2. The majority of the plays written during the time period have completely disappeared and vanished, primarily because drama was considered popular entertainment, not serious literature. B. left not a trace behind and vanished C. disappeared off the face of the earth and vanished; D. vanished, Answer: D. Rationale: The underlined portion needs to be changed because there is obviously synonymous and wordy material. Disappeared and vanished say essentially the same thing, and saying completely is unnecessary. Options B and C both have synonymous and wordy material as well. The word choice needs to be revised to simply state vanished.

Word Choice in Terms of Style, Tone, Clarity, and Economy 20-23 3. Such haphazard publishing practices have necessitated careful study of early editions of Shakespearean plays in order to get it right this time, at least. B. arrive at accurate texts for modern readers. C. come up with something better than a TV sitcom. D. give Shakespeare fans something to cheer about. Answer: B Rationale: Based on the word choice that is used prior to the underlined portion, the author is using a professional or academic voice that is demonstrated through such phrases as haphazard publishing practices and necessitated careful study. Writers should use the word or phrase most consistent with the style and tone of an essay. The style and tone of options C and D is vague ( something ). The best option is B because it is similar to previous word choices.

Conventions of Usage 16-19 4. Every auction is a bit of careful orchestrated chaos. B. carefully orchestration C. careful orchestrations of D. carefully orchestrated Answer: D Rationale: This sentence requires a change because the word careful is misused as an adjective instead of an adverb. The decision must be made how to appropriately use adverb and adjective form. The correct response is D because the chaos is orchestrated carefully.

Conventions of Usage 20-23 5. The women who journeyed west to California in the gold rush of the 1840s have to be a brave and resourceful breed. B. was being C. were D. was Answer: C Rationale: The sentence needs to change because have to be is not in the past tense. Since we are talking about a plural subject women the verb must agree. Were is the correct verb because it agrees with the plural subject. If it was just one woman who journeyed west in the 1840s, then it could be that she was a brave and resourceful person.

Conventions of Punctuation 20-23 6. The sidewalk café, goldfish pond, skylights, plants, and trees, create the psychologically appealing illusion of outdoor space. B. trees, create, C. trees create D. trees create, Answer: C Rationale: The sentence needs to be changed so that it reads correctly without a punctuated pause. The comma between the subject and verb should be deleted because it suggests a pause that results in an incorrect reading of the sentence.

Conventions of Usage 24-27 7. In fact, had members of his acting company not seen to it, Shakespeare s plays might never of been printed. B. not of ever C. of never D. never have Answer: D Rationale: When speaking, we often use contractions such as should ve been printed in place of should have been printed which results in us hearing should of. We subsequently confuse have with of and write incorrect sentences. We need to change this underlined portion to form the present-perfect have rather than of.
