MODELING COMMERCIAL VEHICLE EMPTY TRIPS WITH A FIRST ORDER TRIP CHAIN MODEL José Hoguín-Veras Rensseaer Poytechnic Institute Troy, New York, United States of Aerica, hv@rpi.edu and Een Thorson Rensseaer Poytechnic Institute Troy, New York, United States of Aerica, thorse@rpi.edu ABSTRACT In this paper, new atheatica foruations that depict the fow of epty coercia vehices as a function of a given atrix of coodity fows were deveoped. These foruations are based on probabiity principes and spatia interaction concepts. The odes are based on the concept of order of a trip chain, defined as the nuber of additiona stops with respect to the priary trip, and provide a statistica ink between the first order and higher order trip chains. Three different destination choice probabiity functions were hypothesized based on different assuptions about the destination choice process. One of these foruations incuded a eory coponent, that takes into account the aount of trave aready done in the destination choice process. An exape, based on data fro an origin-destination study in Guateaa City, is incuded to show the practicaity of the proposed odes. The nuerica resuts indicated a sight superiority of the foruation that takes into account the ength of the previous trip. In a cases, this ode outperfored the previous odes which sees to be an indication of the reasonabeness of its fundaenta assuptions and specificay of the benefits of incuding a eory function. The paper aso provides epirica evidence of the iportance of odeing epty trips. The Root Mean Squared Error of the estiation increased between 57% and 83%, with respect to the best epty trip ode, if epty trips are not expicity odeed. KEY WORD: Freight deand odeing, epty trips, trip chains
