What Is a Contemporary Classic? A whole bookshelf of the immortals that was what publisher J. M. Dent aimed to make available and affordable to every reader when he founded the Everyman s Library in 1906. While Everyman s Library has continued to realize Dent s ambition more than one hundred years later publishing everything from Aeschylus to Atwood we are particularly proud of the line of Contemporary Classics that we began in 1995. The Contemporary Classics series represents, quite simply, the best literature of our times, in beautifully packaged hardcovers meant to stand the test of time. These are works from the past century that have achieved the status of modern classics, and the writers form an all-star lineup that few publishers can match. They range from such icons as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf to living legends like Toni Morrison, John Updike, Salman Rushdie, and Margaret Atwood, and to giants of international literature as well, from Gabriel García Márquez to Naguib Mahfouz. J. M. Dent wanted to appeal to every kind of reader, and in that tradition we offer every kind of classic, from the lighthearted wit of P. G. Wodehouse to the dark humor of Roald Dahl, from noir classics by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler to nonfiction masterpieces such as the essays of Albert Camus and George Orwell. Our editions are often the only hardcover edition available. We offer many unique omnibus collections, such as John Updike s Rabbit novels, a selection of Alice Munro s own favorite stories from across her career, and the only single-volume, illustrated edition of the collected works of Kahlil Gibran. We hope they will help you fill your own bookshelves with a permanent library of the immortals of our own time. LuAnn Walther Editorial Director, Everyman s Library

The new Everyman s is so beautifully produced.... They are a form of civilization. A. S. BYATT Everyman s Library continues to maintain its original commitment to publishing the most significant world literature in editions that reflect a tradition of fine bookmaking. Everyman s Library pursues the highest standards, utilizing modern prepress, printing, and binding technologies to produce classically designed books printed on acid-free cream-colored paper and including Smyth-sewn signatures, full-cloth cases with two-color stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, and European-style half-round spines. Each Everyman s Library book has a colored cloth case denoting the historical period of the work.

THE HISTORY OF EVERYMAN S LIBRARY In 1905, Joseph Dent resolved to publish a library of world literature that would appeal to every kind of reader: the worker, the student, the cultured man, the child, the man and the woman. He envisioned a balanced selection of classics and other worthy books, from the popular to the specialized, that would combine to create the perfect library so that a man may be intellectually rich for life. In 1991, Everyman s Library was relaunched with the support of Alfred A. Knopf in the United States. The revived library featured a fine, easy-to-read typographic design, sewn cloth bindings, acid-free paper, silk ribbonmarkers, and substantial new introductions and chronologies by leading scholars and writers. Pride and Prejudice was the first of 50 titles to be published in September 1991, and within twelve months 130 titles had appeared, including such major twentieth-century classics as Joyce s Ulysses, Kafka s The Trial, and Pasternak s Doctor Zhivago, none of which had previously been published in Everyman s Library. By the 100th Anniversary in 2006 the list of Everyman s Library authors included Chinua Achebe, Isabel Allende, Penelope Fitzgerald, Patricia Highsmith, Cormac McCarthy, Toni Morrison, Vladimir Nabokov, Salman Rushdie, John Updike, and Evelyn Waugh. And Everyman s Library continues to grow today, fulfilling Dent s wish by creating a catalog that few publishers can rival in paperback and of course none in hardcover. The edition of record.
