The Beatles - Let It Be - album version - Let It Be Lead vocal: Paul Let It Be was the last song properly recorded on multi-track at Apple Studios during the Get Back sessions in January 1969. It was completed in eight takes (numbered Take 20 through 27 to match the film crew clapboard numbers) on January 31, 1969, the day after the rooftop concert. Take 27 had two complete performances of the song and the first of these Take 27 performances was deemed the best. Though the intent of the January 1969 Get Back sessions was to capture the Beatles live in the studio without benefit of studio trickery like overdubbing, an exception was made on Let It Be so that George Harrison could re-record his lead guitar solo. George s overdub was recorded on April 30, 1969. Author Mark Lewisohn: It is widely believed that there are two different takes of Let It Be publicly available - the single released (in the UK) on March 6, 1970 and the Let It Be LP version released (in the UK) May 8, 1970. Certainly the lead guitar solos in the middle eight differ considerably, and the LP version has a longer duration. But, in truth, these are one and the same version. That is, they are derived from the same tape. John Lennon Bless You - Walls And Bridges 74 This track was an ode to Yoko during the Lost Weekend phase. It is considered one of John s most tender solo compositions. 9.10 BREAK The Beatles - And I Love Her - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: Paul Written mainly by Paul with the middle eight by John it was released as a single in the U.S. reaching #12. Recorded initially as a heavier, up-tempo number on February 25, 1964, The Beatles attempted two takes and moved on to something else. On February 26 they struggled with the simpler, now acoustic arrangement through 12 more takes and Ringo swapping his drums for congas, ultimately leaving it to be re-made the next day. Finally, on February 27, they had the arrangement to their liking and perfected the song in two completed takes (takes 20 and 21). 3

A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John and Paul John Lennon s stunning ballad If I Fell was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from This Boy with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded at their request together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of And I Love Her in the U.S. A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP 4

The Beatles - You ve Got To Hide Your Love Away - Help! Lead vocal: John Recorded in less than two hours on February 18, 1965. Written entirely by John Lennon, who freely admitted the obvious Bob Dylan influence. Lennon wrote this at Kenwood, his home on the St. George s Hill estate in Weybridge, Surrey (where the Beatles would be photographed for the cover of their Rubber Soul album). John s original lyric was I can t go on feeling two foot tall, but when singing it for Paul the first time he accidentally said, two foot small. Lennon then laughed and said, Let s leave it all those pseudes will really love it. The first of their songs since Love Me Do in 1962 to feature an outside musician. Johnnie Scott provides the flute solo at the end of the song, though he is not credited on the album jacket. Help! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Michelle - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul The basic backing track of this classic song was completed in one take on November 3, 1965. Various overdubs and double-tracking were added to complete the song the same day. Lennon is credited with coming up with the I love you middle eight section. The tune had been written by Paul several years earlier but he didn t have proper lyrics until 1965. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - It s Only Love- Help! Lead vocal: John 5

Recorded in six takes on June 15, 1965. The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting high ( I get high when I see you go by ). The working title prior to lyrics being written was That s a Nice Hat. George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of It s Only Love using the original title. In 1972 Lennon called It s Only Love the one song I really hate of mine. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Here, There And Everywhere - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while sitting by the pool of John s estate, this classic ballad was inspired by The Beach Boys God Only Knows. Completed in 14 takes spread over three sessions on June 14, 16 and 17, 1966. Paul s lead vocal is double tracked. Paul, John, and George provide the lush harmony and Ringo drums using brushes. Both Paul and John called Here, There And Everywhere one of their favorite Beatles songs. Never performed by The Beatles in concert and only rarely performed by McCartney since. Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m Only Sleeping Revolver sessions Lead vocal: John Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, 1966. 6

John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of I m Only Sleeping that The Beatles discovered the backwards guitar. On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order. The tapes were then superimposed BACKWARDS in the mix, playing the solo notes and embellishments in the correct order, but maintaining the eerie backwards sound. I m Only Sleeping was one of three songs issued in America six weeks prior to their official release in the UK. American and Canadian Beatles fans heard I m Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing, and Doctor Robert first on Capitol Records Yesterday And Today album, issued June 20, 1966. The rest of the world had to wait until the first week of August for them to appear on the Revolver LP. Yesterday And Today - Capitol LP 7

The Beatles - She s Leaving Home - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocals: Paul and John Recorded March 17, 1967 in six takes. Written primarily by Paul with lyrical assistance from John, the song is based on a story appearing in the February 27, 1967, edition of the Daily Mail about seventeen-year-old runaway Melanie Coe. Paul begins the story about the girl leaving a note for her parents before slipping out of the house, John provides the parents anguished point of view. When Paul called George Martin to ask if he d create a string arrangement for the song he was told that Martin had already committed to a Cilla Black session and Paul would have to wait. Paul then contacted Mike Leander to score the song. Paul had met Leander at the October 11, 1965, Decca Studios session for Marianne Faithfull s cover of Yesterday. The score called for four violins, two violas, two cellos, a double-bass and a harp. The harp is played by Sheila Bromberg, who became the first woman to play on a Beatles recording. As was the case with Eleanor Rigby eleven months earlier, no Beatles played an instrument on She s Leaving Home. Martin made only slight adjustments to Leander s arrangement when it was recorded on March 17. An interesting side note Melanie was a dancer on the Ready Steady Go! TV show and met the Fabs Oct. 1963 when she won a mime contest and was awarded prizes by the Beatles! The Beatles - Julia - The Beatles Lead vocal: John Recorded in three takes on October 13, 1968, Julia is the only John Lennon solo performance in the Beatles catalog. Written primarily in Rishikesh, India, John learned the finger-picking guitar style from Donovan while in India, and used this style on Dear 8

Prudence, as well as some of his post-beatles recordings such as Look At Me, and Yoko Ono s Plastic Ono Band B-side Remember Love. The Julia in question is his free-spirited mother, who was killed when John was 17. In his 1980 Playboy interview, John described the song as a combination of Yoko and my mother blended into one. The lyric ocean child is a reference to Yoko Ono, whose name means child of the ocean. Julia was the last new song recorded for the White Album. According to author Bruce Spizer some of the song s lyrics were adopted from Sand and Foam, a collection of writings and drawings by Kahili Gibran, a Lebanese poet and philosopher. Gibran s words are: Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so the other half may reach you and When life does not find a singer to sing her heart she produces a philosopher to speak her mind. Lennon was also influenced by Yoko, who sent letters to John while he was in India. John: She would write things like I am a cloud. Watch for me in the sky. The Beatles - Two Of Us - Let It Be Lead vocals: Paul and John A Paul McCartney solo composition originally entitled On Our Way Home. Thought by many to be a song about John and Paul, "Two of Us" is actually a song written by Paul 9

about himself and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Eastman. The lyrics are derived from various experiences where the two would get in the car with Paul's dog, Martha, and just drive in the countryside until they were lost. One particular day, Linda parked the car and went for a walk with her camera and Paul sat in the car and wrote the basic tune for the song. Paul introduced the song to the other Beatles during the January 1969 sessions in which the group was working up seven or eight new songs to include in a one-hour concert television special. A 10 song slightly mellow Lennon /McCartney set and I believe equally spilt between John & Paul 9.42 BREAK Cool Magical Mystery Tour PBS special this week did ya see it? 11 Director of Photography? The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocals: Paul and John When Paul McCartney was in the U.S. in early April 1967 he came up with the idea for a Beatles television film about a mystery tour on a bus. During the April 11 flight back home he began writing lyrics for the title song and sketching out some ideas for the film. Upon his arrival in London, Paul pitched his idea to Brian Epstein who happily approved. Paul then met with John to go over the details and the two began work on the film s title track. The title track was written primarily by Paul but was not finished when McCartney brought the song in to be recorded on April 25, 1967. John helped with the missing pieces during the session. Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP 11

The Beatles - I Am The Walrus - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocal: John The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. John Lennon pushed to have his I Am The Walrus as the A-side of the coupling with Paul s Hello, Goodbye, but his song was deemed too unconventional and less commercial than Paul s catchy tune. The title is inspired by the Walrus and the Carpenter from Lewis Carroll s Through The Looking Glass. Lennon described his lyrics as purposely being Dylan-esque. In his 1980 Playboy interview he explained, In those days I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, never saying what you mean, but giving the impression of something. The I Am The Walrus session is notable because it was the first Beatles recording session following the untimely death of their manager, Brian Epstein. Ironically, Epstein had stopped by the last time the Beatles were recording (for Your Mother Should Know at Chappell Recording Studios on August 23, 1967). He was found dead on August 27, aged just 32. All four Beatles met at Paul s St. John s Wood house on September 1 to discuss how they should proceed. Among other business matters, it was decided that they would press on with the Magical Mystery Tour project, temporarily postponing a planned visit to India to study Transcendental Meditation. Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Written by George Harrison on August 1, 1967 while vacationing in a rented house in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles. The story is essentially the same as the lyrics imply. On a foggy night in L.A., George sat at his rented house waiting for friends to arrive, but the maze of thin and winding streets and the thick fog rolling in got the best of them and they became lost. George: I d rented a house in Los Angeles on Blue Jay Way, and I d arrived there from England. I was waiting around for Derek and Joan 12

Taylor who were then living in L.A. I was very tired after the flight and the time change and I stared writing, playing a little electric organ that was in the house. It had gotten foggy and they couldn t find the house for some time. The mood is slightly Indian. Following the release of the song on the Magical Mystery Tour LP in America, the City of Los Angeles got so tired of having to replace stolen Blue Jay Way street signs that it had the street name painted on walls along the street s route. The backing track was recorded in one take on September 6, 1967. Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocal: Paul Paul wrote Your Mother Should Know on harmonium at his Cavendish Avenue home in London. Recorded on August 22 and 23, 1967 at Chappell Recording Studios in London, those dates would be the only time the Beatles recorded at that facility. Eight takes were recorded the first evening. The second night of recording was significant in that it marked the last time the Beatles saw Brian Epstein, who died four days later, aged just 32. Written entirely by Paul, in similar vein to When I m Sixty-Four. Although the song was later re-made at Abbey Road at McCartney s request, it was the Chappell version, with overdubs recorded in September at Abbey Road, that made it onto the Magical Mystery Tour EP. 16 Ravi inspired Beatles sitar set The Beatles - Love You To - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George s first composition written with Indian instruments in mind. The basic track was recorded in six takes on April 11, 1966. The song s working title was Granny Smith, a reference to the name of the green apple popular in the UK. George s lead vocal was recorded on April 12. A harmony vocal by Paul was omitted in the final mix. The tabla is played by Anil Bhagwat, who is credited on the album s back cover. It is assumed that George Harrison plays the sitar on this track. The phrase Love You To does not appear in the song. The closest George comes to the title is I ll make love to you if you want me to. Two years later, the Granny Smith apple would become the logo for The Beatles company, Apple Corps, and would be featured on their record labels. With the exception of the Let It Be album issued in 1970, which had a red apple featured on the label, the standard Apple Records album and single labels displayed a bright green Granny Smith apple on the A-side, while the flipside/side 2 displayed the midsection of the apple cut in half. Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: John Originally recorded on October 12, 1965, The Beatles decided to scrap this version and re-record the song nine days later, on October 21. George Harrison provides the sitar, the first appearance of the instrument on a Beatles recording, though the sitar can be 16

heard in the instrumental introduction on the American version of Help! Written mainly by John with some lyrical assistance from Paul. John: I was trying to write about an affair without letting me wife know so it was very gobbledegook. I was sort of writing from my experiences, girls flats. Paul has said that the ending lyrics, so I lit a fire, refer to the house being burned down in an act of revenge by the spurned lover. Bob Dylan did a slight parody of the song on his 1966 album, Blonde on Blonde. Check out the song 4 th Time Around. Straight from the heart, Paul attempts (and succeeds) at finally ending the musical sparring that had taken place over the year. George Harrison Don t Let Me Wait Too Long - Living In The Material World 73 This track was the single that should have been, almost was, but never appeared. This is a prime piece of pop songwriting, and was scheduled as the second single from the LP for release on September 24 th, 1973. It was assigned an Apple catalog number (Apple 1866), but was mysteriously cancelled at the last minute. 10.42 BREAK John Lennon I m Losing You - Anthology 98 w/ half of Cheap Trick Rick & Bun E. 1980 18
