Phone Number: 661-868-0796 The March book sale reflects a change in hours that did not make it to the poster or book mark that you might see in print or at businesses that share our book sale information. For members pre-sale on Wednesday March 12, the doors will open at 3:00 p.m.and close at 6:30 p.m. - Please share with your friends who are or will become members. Thursday 11:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Friday 10:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Saturday 10:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. and remember, Saturday, 3/15 is half-price day Have you visited the Beale lately? If you have not visited the Beale Library lately, you should come in and see the changes. The new carpeting and flooring has produced lighter, brighter areas everywhere you look. The children s Family Place section is filled with a rainbow of bright colors for carpeting in the book and the activity areas and is completely inviting. The teen and young adult section has been moved upstairs and has created an area specific to their interests and use. Large print books are on the first floor now and easily accessible. There is a new electronic self-checkout system for books so that you spend no time in line or waiting to check out materials. The librarians are there to help you find items and provide more assistance rather than just doing the check-out duty. And have you tried an e-book yet? Books are so easily available for all types of readers and tablets, including phones, and are FREE. The audio area is filled with new books (CDs). There is actually access to all the San Joaquin Valley collections. And don t forget, the Friends continue to have magazine sales (for just 50 cents) as you enter the library and the surplus sale book shelves are filled from edge to edge each Monday and books are still just a dime! COME AND VISIT SOON SEE WHAT IS NEW "A library's function is to give the public in the quickest and cheapest way information, inspiration, and recreation. If a better way than the book can be found, we should use it." Melvil Dewey (1851-1931)

Jehnsen What can you expect at this sale? Many, many books of all genres reasonably priced for every member of the family will be found. We will fill the auditorium, the stage area and the foyer area with new or gently used books that have been donated. We have been fortunate to receive a number of large donations of children s books. We have also had a very generous donation of classical CDs and as many DVDs. There is no specific topical feature for this sale rather we have some of everything. You really need to come and see for yourself. The Friends of the Library recently completed the budget process for 2014. As you may know, all of the monies that are earned by any of the sales (formal sales 3 x year, magazines and surplus book sales) are redirected to support of the library system. Any donations that are received and the money from membership sales are directed to the library support as well. This year we will continue to fund subscriptions to magazines, children s summer programs at all the branches that do not have a Friends group as well as other branches, programs at Beale for children and families during the summer, and the purchase of circulating materials (books and audio CDs and e- book access). No money is paid to board members or volunteers for their time.

Library Talk March 2014 Page 3 Weekly volunteers of the Friends come into the library and spend time sorting, cleaning, and packing books for the sales. We could not do this without them. We would be pleased to have you join this group of hardworking individuals. You just need to like working with books and be willing to spend one, two or four hours a week with us. Could this be YOU? Page 4 Library Talk March 2014

Library Talk March 2014 Page 5 Friends of the Library Branch Affiliates Once again it is my pleasure to report the progress and varied activities of the Friends of the Library groups that are in place at many of the library branches throughout the county. The book sales of the Friends groups both special sales and ongoing are providing additional funding to the branch for books and programs for adults and children. The support a Friends group provides continues to be something that everyone is grateful for having. If you live in one of the areas outside of Bakersfield, there may be a group that would be very appreciative of your help assisting the library in working with donations; cleaning, sorting and pricing donations; placing books and materials out for patrons to see and possibly buy. While e-books are increasing in popularity, there are still a large number of people who like real books and Friends is a group that helps provide both. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, consider a Friends of the Library group. Even the teens who need to do community service should consider this nonprofit group. If your closest branch has no Friends support group, consider starting one with some of your friends and neighbors. It is quite easy and you will get all the help you need from the parent group. Frazier Park, and Baker Street have both started groups recently and they are becoming more and more active. The Friends at the branches would all welcome more volunteers. And, volunteering gives you smiles. Top Ten Reasons to Volunteer 1. When you stay home you get too many telemarketing calls. 2. Your family could use a break from you. 3. You might need help yourself someday. 4. It's hard to win a game of solitaire. 5. Soap operas all sound alike. 6. If you don't go out each day, you get old. 7. Why let your boss have all the fun in life? 8. The car needs a workout. 9. Your mom would be proud of you. 10. Who cares about money? Friends of the Kern County Library, Inc. P.O. The Friends Newsletter, LibraryTalk, is published three times each year and is sent to all members. In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you. Page 6 Library Talk March 2014 [Type a quote from the document of the summary of an interesting point. You can position the text box anywhere in the document. Use the Drawing Tools tab to change Much of what the Friends do is a process of recycling books of all genres both those for fun and those to educate - cassettes, records, CDs, magazines, gift books, DVDs, children s magazines, teacher texts, coffee table books, textbooks, etc. We accept donations of any type of gently used books and audio visual items. Another recycling method is for you to bring your own book bags to fill. We will help you, of course. And while we will provide plastic or paper, your own bag may be bigger and easier to carry. It is even okay to bring your own box or small wheeled cart to a sale. Donations may be brought to the Beale Library and left at the Information Desk or at the back of the building at the loading dock Monday through Saturday. Tax deductible receipts are provided when requested. When items are donated, those in very good condition are given to the library to consider adding them to the library collections. Others will come to the Friend s group for sale. Our sales depend on your generosity and support. Thank you for thinking of us when you have books to share. Help us raise funds and share our sale by sharing the information Would you help us share the upcoming book sale dates and times? Would you like a copy of the book sale flyer that could be emailed to friends and co-workers? Send us a note and you will be sent the small poster in a black and white version that can be printed and shared. (P.S.
