Welcome to the Dover Drumline! We are thrilled to welcome you as a member or prospective member of one of the school s largest, most successful, and most rewarding organizations. The Dover Band program has a history of excellence and has been recognized and rewarded for its achievements since its inception in 1947. The responsibility of continuing this decades-long legacy now falls on your shoulders. As an independent section of the marching band, the percussion program aims to create a learning environment that is conducive to a high level of musical performance and fosters both individual and ensemble growth. We will demonstrate professionalism throughout all aspects of rehearsal and performance as we strive for excellence. The success of our ensemble depends on each individual member working towards the betterment of the group. Therefore, it is extremely important that every member actively cooperates and participates to accomplish this goal. Our entire organization functions on the premise that the individual is responsible to the group; we are only as strong as our weakest member, and it is the collective responsibility of the group to support each other in our pursuit of collective excellence. To that end, we have compiled this handbook to communicate our expectations and the standards everyone will be held to throughout the season. The following techniques and approaches include both original concepts and approaches that have been compiled from a variety of educational publications and resources. The subsequent pages set a tangible standard of approach, technique, style, and conduct for all sections and players to maintain. When in doubt, consult this handbook. We sincerely hope that your experience in the percussion section will be rewarding and educational. We are always available to discuss, in confidence, any concerns you may have regarding your involvement. Please feel free to reach out at any time. William Nailor GRANT T. DOVER DRUMLINE AUDITIONS 2018 AUDITION OVERVIEW The 2018 auditions will be split into two separate dates to accommodate the number of interested students. Each day will be split into blocks of time a student can sign-up for, during which their individual audition will take place. April 21 st Audition Day One April 28 th Audition Day Two Block 1: 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Block 2: 10:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Block 3: 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. All students are required to be at one of the two audition days, and present the entire time of their respective block. Sign-ups for audition blocks will be available at every drumline rehearsal and all students must be signed up by the mandatory April 7 th rehearsal. Audition blocks will consist of 5-7 students per block, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is important to note that ALL STUDENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED INTO THE DRUMLINE, and the audition process is for placement purposes only. Students are encouraged to try their best throughout the process, and perform as much of the audition piece as possible. During the audition process, as well as the rest of the season, a good attitude and work ethic will mean much more than absolute musical ability. FRONT ENSEMBLE AUDITION Students interested in playing a keyboard instrument for the 2018 marching season (marimba, vibes, xylophone) will be asked to demonstrate basic music reading and rhythm comprehension skills, as well as play through selections from the warm-up packet at the time of their audition. A 4.0 octave marimba and mallets will be provided for all students to use during their audition. Additionally, there are multiple opportunities to play non-mallet instruments in the front ensemble this year, including; Drumset (1) Timpani / Glockenspiel (1) Percussion (2-3) Guitar / Bass Guitar (1 ea.) Synthesizer (2) Accessories / SFX (1) Any student interested exclusively in one of the above parts should inform Will and Grant no later than April 7 th for additional instrument-specific instruction and relevant audition information. These instruments will also be available during the prep sessions for any interested students to learn and play on. Depending on interest, we may hold front ensemble specific auditions for certain parts in the evening prior to the high school band concert on April 14 th. BATTERY AUDITION There will be two components to the battery audition; music and marching. For the music audition, students interested in playing a battery percussion instrument (snare drum, bass drum, combos, tenors, and crash cymbals) will be required to play several selections from the list of 40 Standard Rudiments in traditional fashion (slow fast slow) as well as the piece Dover Drumline Audition 2018. A 14 marching snare drum (on a stand) will be provided for all students to use during their audition, as well as a pair of sticks.

For the music audition, students are not required to play the entire piece. The piece is divided into four sections; A-B- C-D. Each section displays a set of skills required for an instrument in the ensemble. They are as follows: A Front Ensemble Percussion / Marching Cymbals B Bass Drums (1-5) / Combos C Multi-Tenors (sextuplet configuration) D Snare Drum (this section must be played using Traditional Grip) Students must choose an instrument to strive for and play the piece from the beginning through that instrument s corresponding section, at minimum. For the marching audition, students will be evaluated in a group setting, both with and without an instrument on to ensure they can perform basic movements and formations while carrying an instrument. EVALUATION CRITERIA The primary goal of instrument selection is to create a cohesive and complete ensemble. Students will be evaluated on their technique, quality of sound, rhythmic accuracy, dynamics, and marching ability (for battery percussion only). Individual feedback can be provided and instructor notes made available after the audition process is fully complete, if requested and on a per-student basis. AUDITION FEE Due to the number of students in the 2018 ensemble and the increased equipment demands, there will be a $20.00 fee due at the time of the audition, used to subsidize the cost of protective auditory equipment, a music binder, additional uniform components specific to the percussion section, and a pair of performance sticks / mallets for each student. If this fee is cost prohibitive for any student or family, please speak with Grant or Will privately and they will work to accommodate. Checks are preferable, and can be made out to the Dover Music Boosters. PARTICIPATION CONTRACT The last two pages of this packet is a participation contract, which includes a contact form, conflict list, an attendance agreement, and an equipment agreement. All of these sections must be filled out entirely, signed by a parent or guardian, and presented at the time of audition. Without a fully completed and signed contract students will not be allowed to audition, as this information is considered in instrument placement. RESOURCES We maintain a website, DoverDrumline.com, used to house music and resources throughout the season. This site is password-protected, and the password to gain entry is; fluffybunny1 (without the quotation marks). All of our music, warm-ups, exercises, and other pieces will be digitally available for download via the website. Additionally, we have compiled a comprehensive drumline handbook that is housed on this site, and should be downloaded and saved onto each student s ipad. Both the handbook and exercise packets will be referenced throughout the prep sessions as well as the season. We utilize a drumline-only GroupMe to communicate with the students throughout the season. To join, simply text the message @doverdruml to 81010 and you will receive text updates when they are sent out.
