program notes To travel through the countrside o reland is to ourne through histor Castles, stone towers, walls and other ortiications can be ound throughout the beautiul countrside Some structures have been lovingl restored while others lie in ruin A simple mass o rubble ma be the onl testament to the ormer greatness and importance o the ground on which it lies Castles in reland were not elaborate dwellings o roalt Although most were owned b kings, heads o clans or titled English gentr, the were ortiied dwellings that were built or protection against raids and invaders CASTLE LORE is a unique setting o two rish olk songs, inspired b the composer s ourne to the Emerald sle The irst melod, entitled Grace O Malle, tells the stor o the amous emale pirate, seaarer, trader and chietain Grace was born in 1530 in Count Mao and was the daughter o a successul sea captain As the stor is told, the island o Clare and Clew a was entirel under the control o Grace and her band o men, with the exception o the castle Rockleet With this strategic propert in mind, Grace used her charms to marr ron Dick urke, the owner o the castle, with the stipulation that either part could terminate the marriage ater a single ear One morning, as their anniversar approached, Grace ortiied hersel in the castle ater her husband had departed Upon his return, she shouted dismiss thee! rom the top o the structure, thereb acquiring the castle as her own rian oru s March is a amiliar melod that honors the last High King o reland His association with Clontar Castle is based upon a battle that was ought more than a centur beore the structure was built rian oru marched his arm to Clontar to wage a great battle against two oes that had ormed an alliance to overthrow his rule The battle ended in oru s victor That same night, the king was praing in his tent under the watchul ees o ive guards A small group o Vikings who were retreating rom the battle happened upon the tent, and, realizing that the had lost the battle but could still triumph, attacked and killed all ive guards and the 72-ear-old monarch Clontar Castle, on the grounds o this historic battle, is now a restored luxur hotel that oers roal reuge to those who wish to experience this ascinating bit o rish histor notes to the Conductor The opening statement, based on Grace O Malle, should be plaed with great dignit and conve a sense o pride articular attention should be given to the dnamic shape in the ourth measure rian oru s March begins with a spirited iddle solo that sets the tone or the rest o the piece The viola counter melodic igures on beat two o measures 19, 21 and 23 should be emphasized to balance the violin melodic statement The cello and bass should be ver strict in terms o tempo allowing a sense o stlistic reedom with the melod above At measure 3, the ootsteps combined with the chain should provide an allusion to a marching arm dressed in chain mail lease balance this eect as our instrumentation requires ollowing the ritardando, the melodic statement at measure 7 should be even more spirited than the irst introduction o the theme The accelerando that begins at measure 75 should take the orchestra as ast as technicall and stlisticall possible, but no aster! would like to oer m sincere thanks and admiration to m colleagues Kathleen rungard, Michael Alexander, Gerald Anderson and Sandra Dackow, or their riendship and shared vision o music education This publication is respectull dedicated to their teaching endeavors and correlates with Orchestra Expressions, ook hope that ou and the orchestra eno CASTLE LORE, and ind it to be a valued addition to our concert program est wishes or a wonderul perormance! review Onl Legal Use Requires urchase
