Dear Club Member, Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is among the oldest and largest professional nonprofit theaters in the nation. We invite you to attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this summer with The Commonwealth Club. Leading the trip is Dr. Philippa Kelly, Resident Dramaturg with California Shakespeare Theatre. HIGHLIGHTS Attend 4 plays with our group and take the opportunity to see more plays on your own. Enjoy informative and lively discussions about the plays led by our study leader, Dr. Philippa Kelly. Gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Bard of Avon. Explore OSF s three stages and during a theatre tour, and enjoy specially arranged discussions with company members. Stay at the historic Ashland Springs Hotel, steps away from the festival theaters. Take a historic walking tour of Ashland, and enjoy some of the city s top restaurants. The group is limited to 25, so call soon to reserve your space! Best regards, Kristina Nemeth Director of Club Travel

ITINERARY Tuesday, June 12 ARRIVE ASHLAND, OREGON Arrive independently throughout the day at Medford Airport and transfer independently to the Ashland Springs Hotel. Travelers who prefer to drive to Ashland may park at the hotel at no charge. Meet fellow travelers this evening for a welcome reception at the hotel. Continue to our first performance, Romeo and Juliet, at the Angus Bowmer Theatre. Enjoy a post-performance discussion with study leader Philippa Kelly back at the hotel. ASHLAND SPRINGS HOTEL (R) Wednesday, June 13 After a continental breakfast, join Company Members for a discussion about last night s play. Return to the hotel for a short prologue by Philippa Kelly for our matinee performance. After lunch attend a performance of Troilus and Cressida at the New Theatre. Take the rest of the afternoon to relax or explore the town. Ashland has a wealth of wonderful shops and art galleries, and a great culinary scene. Maps and suggested activities will be provided by your tour staff. (There are two plays this evening with the festival. The Merry Wives of Windsor, Iowa has its final preview performance at the Elizabethan Stage and Animal Crackers will be performed at the Angus Bowmer Theatre. If you are interested, we will assist in getting tickets for participants to either play.) ASHLAND SPRINGS HOTEL (B, L) Thursday, June 14 Embark on a tour of the Festival s three theaters the Elizabethan Stage, the Angus Bowmer Theatre and the New Theatre. This walking tour explores the history, design and technology of repertory theatre. (The tour is a walking tour and has several flights of stairs. A stairless tour may be available. Please advise when booking this program to discuss your options.) Following the tour, we have lunch at one of Ashland s wonderful restaurants. Then continue on a historical walking tour of Ashland. This evening attend the World Premier of White Snake by Mary Zimmerman. Return to the hotel for a post- theater discussion and late night snack with fellow Club theater-goers. ASHLAND SPRINGS HOTEL (B, L) Friday, June 15 This morning enjoy another discussion with Company Members about one of the plays our group has enjoyed. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. There are performances this afternoon of Seagull and Animal Crackers. In the early evening, gather for a group discussion and wrap-up followed by a celebratory farewell dinner. After dinner, we attend our final play the opening night of Shakespeare s Henry the V at the Festival s Elizabethan Stage. ASHLAND SPRINGS HOTEL (B, D) Saturday, June 16 DEPART ASHLAND After breakfast, check out of the Ashland Springs Hotel. Information about additional plays on Saturday or extending you stay for tours to Oregon s wine country are available. (B)

THE PLAYS Romeo and Juliet / William Shakespeare Directed by Laird Williamson Shakespeare s consummate tragedy about young lovers swept into a catastrophic vortex of misunderstandings, secrets and fate is set in 1840s Alta California a vibrant and conflicted time in our history. Romeo and Juliet, the son and daughter of two landed families locked in an old feud, are irresistibly drawn to each other. Defying the hatred and distrust surrounding them, they dare to believe they can, and must, be together. When you are passionately, purely in love, nothing else matters not even life itself. Troilus and Cressida / William Shakespeare Directed by Rob Melrose Produced in association with New York s Public Theater The war has lasted seven drawn-out years. Few illusions remain about the glory of armed conflict or anything else for that matter, including love. Caught in the chaos is a traitor s daughter whose romance with a prince is doomed as a casualty of wartime politics. Set during the Trojan War, Shakespeare s cynical and bitterly funny indictment of the futility of war is made more immediate in OSF s production, placed a against the backdrop of conflict in the contemporary Middle East. The White Snake / Adapted and directed by Mary Zimmerman World Premiere Based on the classic Chinese fable a beloved legend, a snake spirit disguised as a beautiful woman falls in love with a young scholar. White Snake keeps her true identity secret from Xu Xian, but a disapproving monk persists in unmasking her. With the help of Green Snake, White Snake summons all her magic powers to defeat the spirits and monsters threatening her life and her great love. With live music and beautiful visual metaphors, Tony Award winning director Mary Zimmerman invites your imagination to her staging of this fantastical transcendent romance. Henry V / William Shakespeare Directed by Joseph Haj A gifted young English king makes a rash decision to go to war. Against overwhelming odds, Henry achieves heroic stature, leading his country to victory, conquering France and winning its princess. But the king s hands are dirty. There s a terrible cost in human life and ruthless acts of moral ambiguity. In a propulsive, provocative production with contemporary resonances, Shakespeare s rousing history crowns Henry s complicated three-play journey from disaffected prince to legendary king.
