Music Success Stories Emma Stein, Violin, Grade 7 (Distinction) Elizabeth MacKay, Clarinet, Grade 3 (Distinction) Kelsey Osborne, Clarinet, Grade 3, (Distinction) Olivia Foote, Clarinet, Grade 1 (Merit) Congratulations to the following students who have auditioned successfully for the NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra in 2018: o Enshean Lin (violin) o Ayoung Cho (cello) o CJ Pearce (cello) o Marian Sun (flute) o Amy Srichantra (violin) The Stomach Experience Alyssa Toland At the start of the term I applied for a recording scholarship at The Stomach. When I applied I was not expecting to get it, and when I did I was ecstatic. I worked with Nigel (the sound engineer), at The Stomach on my three covers which were the pieces I nominated to record in my application. When I arrived I was given a brief tour of the building before I got set up. It took me a while to get used to the equipment around me, but it wasn't long before I couldn't stop smiling in between songs. It was honestly so much fun, and I would 100% encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take it. I finished recording, Nigel fiddled with the recordings and I walked out with copies of my recordings and a smile on my face! Pianists Grade 7 or higher Would you like to learn how to accompany a large adult choir - and get a small payment for doing so? The Palmerston North Choral Society is looking for a new 'student accompanist' for 2018. This person is expected to attend rehearsals every Monday evening and to sit with Mrs Smith - the regular accompanist. They then practise some of the music and accompany the choir when they can. if you are interested ask Mrs Smith at m.smith@pnghs.school.nz

2018 Performance Programme We expect to offer a wide range of music groups in 2018 (see grid). You can follow the progression from entry level to high performance for each instrument. Find out more here. https://www.nzso.co.nz/learning-and-connecting/learning/nzsostudent-club/ Choir Accompanist New Gear We have purchased a new drum kit for studio one. This kit is suitable for all types of drumming and is a little smaller in size so it is easier to transport and move for performances. We have kept part of the old kit so that two drummers can each have a kit during a drum lesson. Farewell to Mr Whittaker 38 years at PNGHS The staff had their opportunity to say goodbye to Mr Whittaker this week. As part of the farewell Miss Joe, Mrs Hunter and Ms Carter played a violin piece as a tribute. We are replacing him with three people - Miss Joe, who has a performance degree in violin, will teach violin/ viola, Mr Boniface will direct The Hit Squad (percussion ensemble) and Mrs Wallace will conduct Training Orchestra. Audio Class Recording of String Orchestra Enjoy the recording the audio class made of String Orchestra, in HC1, early this term. Great playing by SO and great mixing by the audio class!
