This outstanding body of work dates from the 1960s onwards and offers the viewer an insight into the processes of a phenomenal painter and printmaker. Gould Piano Trio with Mark Simpson Part of the International Concert Series 7.30-9.30pm / All welcome Tickets 15.00 from the Music Office 01458 444404 Since winning the first prize at the Premio Vittorio Gui in Florence and the Melbourne Chamber Music Competition, the Gould Piano Trio is considered as one of the finest of its kind performing today. Their widely diverse repertoire displays a strong stylistic conviction appreciated by audiences and critics alike. They celebrate their 25th anniversary year with performances of a new commission from British composer Mark Simpson, supported through Beyond Borders and the PRS for Music Foundation. Simpson will also join the trio for a performance of one of the most remarkable works to come out of World War II: Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time. Composed whilst Messiaen was a French prisoner of war, his Quartet is a highly emotionally engaging, enduring and improbable masterpiece, which seems to touch the outer edges of human experience. This is an ideal opportunity for all pupils to gain experience performing in a formal concert. Showcase 7.15-9.00pm / A limited number of tickets are available from blinco.a@millfieldschool.com The jewel in the crown of the charitable fundraising year. All pupils are invited to audition and the selected acts perform on the following nights. Song, dance, comedy and a few surprises are always sure to feature on the bill. Singing Children of Africa 7.15-8.45pm / Free admission to all with a retiring collection. An inspiring combined concert with Millfield Prep and Millfield Choirs singing with a group of visiting children from Kenya. House Song 6.30-8.00pm / All pupils participate in the House Song competition. Each house grouping presents a massed choir and chamber choir piece to the whole school and parents. A wonderful evening that demonstrates the strength of house spirit that pervades Millfield life. An evening that is often the highlight of a pupil s year! 7 October 2018 Fine Arts Centre The Big Draw 11.00am-2.00pm / Art Scholars only Millfield takes part in the national annual drawing event, The Big Draw. Planned collaborations include Year 9 pupils and Art Scholars joining forces with Millfield Prep. 15 October 2018 Staff and Scholars Recital A highlight of the music calendar that features performances from both Millfield staff and its music scholars in a hugely enjoyable collaborative showcase. 5 November - 8 December 2018 Atkinson Gallery Leonard Green Exhibition 9.30am-5.00pm (closed on Sundays) / Exhibition of paintings from Leonard Green. This body of work, entitled Coming Home, has been produced over the last five years and reflects Green s interests in abstract art and in music as a seminal element in making art. His paintings are energetic, colourful and dynamic and are inspired by the movements of dance and swimming.
9 November 2018 Greater Love One hundred years ago the First World War ended, and a new world began. The example and experience of those who lived through it shaped the world we live in today. Greater Love will, through art, dance, drama, music and song, remember and pay homage to the sacrifice of all who fought and died in that terrible War. It will also seek to instil anew the hope of an end to all war. 14-15 November 2018 Short Cuts 7.15-9.00pm / A showcase of raw acting talent. This evening of very short plays is an opportunity for older pupils to display their skills as performers in a challenging, modern, edgy repertoire. 13 November 2018 Wells Cathedral Choral Service for Remembrance 7.00-8.00pm / Marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, a Cathedral service of choral music, readings and reflections on the subject of Remembrance. 15 November 2018 Foyer Tea and Music 4.15-5.00pm / An informal concert that enables pupils of all abilities to perform in a relaxed setting. Harry s extraordinary talent and breathtaking creativity have earned him a reputation as one of the most gifted improvising pianists in the world. He has been likened to a human jukebox with his note-perfect knowledge of literally tens of thousands of tunes, including most of the classical repertoire, jazz standards and the pop charts since 1950. No other musician can spontaneously reinvent Michael Jackson in the style of Mozart, recreate a night at the Groucho Club through the TV themes of its actor members, and improvise a seamless medley of audience requests ranging from James Bond to Shostakovich via West Side Story. Harry s show is a musical Cirque du Soleil, with one piano the only prop. 21 November 2018 Dance Studio Tea and Ballet 4.30-5.30pm / A wonderful opportunity to watch some of our very best ballet dancers performing work from their Royal Academy of Dance examination classes. 22-23 November 2018 Volpone 7.15-8.15pm / Our talented pupils in Year 9 and 10 perform a 30-minute version of Ben Jonson s hilariously satirical masterpiece. 27 November 2018 A Level Drama Devised Practical Exam 7.15-8.45pm / The A level Drama performances are an evening of breathtaking theatre. Pupils demonstrate their expertise and invention refined over their two year course. The productions are always exhilarating and demonstrate the tremendous imaginations of the young directors and actors, giving them an opportunity to show their wonderful creativity and performance abilities. 24 November 2018 Johnson Sessions A dedicated sessions showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the diverse musical talents of Millfield pupils in an intimate gig setting. 26 November 2018 Evening Recital A wonderful opportunity to watch Millfield s top musicians perform in a formal recital. Playing is of the highest level throughout Classical Music Magazine. An extraordinary coup for any concert hall, we are delighted to host two awardwinning artist groups on the Millfield stage on the same night. The first half of our stunning programme is given by the Wiggin-Wass Sax and Harp Duo. Award-winning saxophonist Huw Wiggin and harpist Oliver Wass first performed together at the Stogumber Festival in 2017 and were later invited to collaborate with pianist/organist Timothy End at Winchfield Festival 2018. This performance will include themes from Carmen, arrangements of some of Gershwin s hit songs and the ever popular Debussy Arabesque no. 1. After the interval, the stage is taken by the acclaimed Ferio Saxophone Quartet. One of the leading European saxophone quartets among the new generation of artists, the quartet consistently receive a highly enthusiastic reception from audiences and critics alike. 5 March 2019 Year 10 GCSE Drama Practical Exam 7.15-8.45pm / A thrilling evening of short pieces of theatre, created from scratch by Year 10 Drama pupils. 8 March 2019 International Women s Day Concert Dating back to 1909, today celebrates the economic, political, and social achievements of women. The position of women in music is no less underrepresented and deserving of recognition, and consequently Millfield Music has decided to honour the occasion with a concert dedicated entirely to female composers. A wide range of repertoire will be performed, demonstrating the contributions female composers have made to music throughout history. 19 March 2019 Wells Cathedral Choral Concert 7.30-9.30pm / For over 20 years, Millfield has performed major choral works in Wells Cathedral, with our School Choir combining with Millfield Chorale, our adult choral society, to form a massed Festival Chorus of 200 singers. This year, the Chorus perform Gounod s beautifully expressive and sensuous Petite Messe Solonnelle de Sainte-Cécile 12 March 2019 Year 11 GCSE Drama Scripted Performance 5.30-9.30pm / The GCSE Scripted Performances are a highlight of the Drama calendar. They are an opportunity for GCSE candidates to demonstrate their skills and experience at the end of the course, applying them to an extract of script for assessment. 16 March 2019 Johnson Sessions A dedicated sessions showcase featuring a huge range of contemporary music styles. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the diverse musical talents of Millfield pupils in an intimate gig setting. 20-23 March 2019 Dance Show 7.15-9.15pm (20-22 March), 2.00-4.00pm (23 March) / Over 100 pupils will be taking part in this celebration of dance.
