Historical Fiction Scrapbook DUE This project will be a character study of the main character in your book, and it will take the form of a scrapbook. You are to create the scrapbook as if the main character put it together. THIS IS THE ONLY COPY OF THE PROJECT MATERIALS YOU WILL RECEIVE. Keep it in a safe place. Materials!Historical fiction novel, scrapbook pages, and your imagination! Preparation for the project 1) One historical novel that interests you and is at the appropriate reading level for you. Have your book approved by Ms. Maslowski by Book Title: Author: Approved: Parent Signature: Requirements for your historical scrapbook Scrapbook cover The scrapbook cover should include the title of the novel, the author s name, the main character s name (you are creating this scrapbook as if it were put together by the main character), and your name. Page One - Journal Entry Write a journal entry from the main character s point of view that gives a summary of the novel. The journal entry should: 1. Be written in complete paragraphs. 2. Include a brief description of the following: main characters, setting, major events, and conclusion 3. Be written/typed on a sheet of paper and glued into the scrapbook 4. Page Two - Pictures and Photographs! Five pictures or photographs should be included on this page ( photos can be drawn, cut out of magazines or be computer generated). Underneath each image, include a complete sentence describing each photograph. Photos should illustrate the following: 1. The main character in a scene from the novel 2. The character s family and/or friends 3. The main character s major accomplishments 4. The setting of the story 5. A picture of your choice Use the template below to do a rough draft of what you want your pictures to look like. Put each letter into a separate envelope and address it to the appropriate character. Place each envelope into the scrapbook pocket. "Letter One Write this letter from the main character s point of view and address it to a secondary character. In the letter, describe the main problem the main character is facing in the novel. Describe the problem in complete, detailed paragraphs using examples from the text to back up why you are writing this in your letter. Use the friendly letter format. 2
"Letter Two Write this letter from the secondary character s point of view to the main character, and in this letter describe the solution to the main character s problem as it happened in the story. Page five Souvenirs and mementos Draw, create, collect, or find at least six souvenirs that the main character would have put into the scrapbook. These objects should reflect events in the story or important aspects of your character. Include an explanation next to each object describing its significance. Friendly Letter Format Return Address Line 1 (1) Return Address Line 2 Date (Month Day, Year) (2) Dear Name of Recipient, (3) Body Paragraph 1.............................................................................. (4) Closing (Sincerely...), (5) Signature (6) In the Friendly Letter Format, the address, date, the closing, signature, and printed name are all indented to the right half of the page. The first line of each paragraph is indented, as well. Your Address (1) All that is needed is your street address on the first line and the city, state and zip on the second line. (Not needed if the letter is printed on paper with a letterhead already on it.) Date (2) Put the date on which the letter was written in the format Month Day Year e.g. August 30, 2003. Skip a line between the date and the salutation. Salutation (3) Usually starts out with Dear so and so, or Hi so and so. Note: There is a comma after the end of the salutation (you can use an exclamation point also if there is a need for some emphasis). Body (4) The body is where you write the content of the letter; the paragraphs should be single spaced with a skipped line between each paragraph. Skip 2 lines between the end of the body and the closing. Closing (5) Let's the reader know that you are finished with your letter; usually ends with Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank you, and so on. Note that there is a comma after the end of the closing and only the first word in the closing is capitalized. Signature (6) Your signature will go in this section, usually signed in black or blue ink with a pen. 5
