FINDING FILM STUDIES MATERIAL Resources for Film Studies Finding Film Studies material: a guide to online searching and the Film Studies Classification Scheme efl Film Studies Classification Scheme All films and books on film are fully searchable on the online library catalogue. The catalogue will tell you which libraries hold the particular items that you need and where you can find them on the shelves. The two main film collections are housed in the English Faculty Library (Anglo-American film) and the Taylor Institution Modern Languages Faculty Library (European and World Cinema). Both collections are classified according to the Library of Congress classification scheme. There is also an open-shelf collection of film books in the Bodleian Lower Camera, also classified to Library of Congress. A broad outline of the scheme is included at the end of this leaflet, together with specific examples of shelfmarks for books and films. http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/libraries/subjects/film http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/english/collections/film If you have a specific enquiry relating to film resources, or would like to book an individual appointment for advice about researching Film Studies, please contact: Helen Scott Film Studies Subject Consultant, Bodleian Libraries Tel: 01865 (2)78155 Email: helen.scott@bodleian.ox.ac.uk http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/libraries/subjects/film June 2010 / HS / KW

Finding Films and Film books on the Oxford library catalogue SOLO is the new interface for the library catalogue although the original web and Telnet versions are still available. Via SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online) http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk The easiest way to find materials on a particular film, director or genre is to use the search box on the main front page of SOLO. Type in your search keywords (e.g. Fritz Lang) and click on the Search button. Alternatively, if you are only looking for films, and not books about films, you can select the Audio-Visual option from the materials drop-down menu and then search by keyword. Films in our collections are essentially organised by country, so if you want to browse through all the films we have from Germany, for example, you will need to do a specific shelfmark search using the relevant country code (as listed at the back of this leaflet.) You will need to add an * at the end of the shelfmark string (e.g. PN.G3* to generate a list of all German films) and to select in the shelfmark from the list of options underneath the main search box. This will generate a list of results. Results are also grouped together on the right-hand side of the screen by topic, language, resource type etc. If you click on the Locations link for each record, you will find details of where the item is held and its individual shelfmark. When doing a specific shelfmark search on a country, it might also help to limit your search to a specific library (Anglo-American film at the English Faculty Library; European and World Cinema at the Taylor Institution Modern Languages Faculty Library). All films are kept behind the Issue Desk in each library so you will need to make a note of the shelfmark of the film you require and ask library staff to fetch it for you.

Via OLIS (web version) http://library.ox.ac.uk/ A straightforward search by either title, author or LC subject heading will provide you with a list of results for books on film. Please note that you are cannot specify shelfmarks or limit your search to individual libraries using the web version of OLIS. SOLO is a better option in this respect. Once you have done this, a filter will be applied to all subsequent searches in your current OLIS session, so only Audio-Visual materials will appear in your results lists, until you click on the Clear Limits button. To find a specific film, use the browse option and type in the film title followed by the word videorecording [e.g. Jules et Jim videorecording]. Alternatively you can use the keyword search to find film titles containing specific words [e.g. crime videorecording]. The same principle used in SOLO searches i.e. searching by material type, can also be used when searching for films on OLIS. You just need to select Audio-Visual from the Material Type option in the Set Limits screen, which can be accessed using the Set/Clear Limits menu button from the Search for Keywords screen. Via OLIS (Telnet version) In the main search screen instead of typing in a search command, type OP for OPAC Parameters and then select Change Options to limit the search. Type EFL for the English Faculty Library or TAY for the Modern Languages Faculty Library under Current Qualification and then return through all the next fields to resume the search. Any search you now do will be limited to that particular library.

a) Title search (t=) If you know the correct title, type it in and then add videorecording at the end, e.g. titus videorecording b) Title keyword (tw=) If you are not sure of the exact title, type in words from the title and the word videorecording, e.g: tw=videorecording titus tw=videorecording juliet tw=gentlemen verona videorecording Some catalogue records contain information on creation/production credits e.g. names of editors, writers, producers, directors and people responsible for music and photography; however this information is not displayed in the OLIS full display. To view credit information, select the MARC results on the web OPAC or from the options at the bottom of the screen in Telnet, and then go forward to the 508 field. (Similarly to view the BBFC certificate for feature films (e.g. UK Cert. 18 ), included in some records, select MARC and go forward to the 521 field. Please note that not all films have full catalogue records so it may not always be possible to see full information on cast and credits. Search for people in cast and credits lists If you are not sure of the title or director, but wish to search for performers or people who contribute to the artistic or technical production of a film, a useful source of information for cast and credits lists is the Internet Movie Database (http://imdb.com/). From this database you can find the films with which the people you are interested in are associated. Always make sure that: you have checked to see if the film is available to borrow and that you have made a note of the shelfmark to give to library staff at the desk.
