Dill Harris Scout Cecil Jacobs Dill Harris sent you a Love-gram and posted a message on your wall: Let s have a baby, Scout! Ya think we can find a stork to bring it to us? Atticus Finch posted a message on your wall: If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. www.boohole.com STOP DISCRIMINATION! NOVEL TITLE: Name: Write a status update for one of the characters in the novel after each chapter or a selection.

Information for the Teacher Age Level: 7th through 12th grades Objectives: 1. Students will analyze character qualities and motives. 2. Students will summarize and make generalizations from the content. 3. Students will make connections to the reading. 4. Students will evaluate relationships among characters. 5. Students will explore, evaluate, and make predictions about character development through assuming the persona of a literary character. Directions: Because most students are familiar with social networking sites, this twist on the character sketch or analysis may be more meaningful to them, as well as serve as a motivational tool for reluctant learners. Use the samples on the following pages to show the students how to create a character Facebook profile & wall. If you have your own Facebook, show them, if possible. Students may use the provided handouts or choose to use poster board or create it in a word processing or design document. Let the students know your expectations beforehand; for example, I may tell them (or write on the board) that they must include: 1. Picture or icon for character 2. Minimum of one status update 3. Three posts from friends (that relate to that particular chapter or the novel in general) 4. Two advertisements (for fictional businesses relating to the novel) 5. Four or more other characters they are friends with, and so on. You may adjust how much information you want them to include and how many visual enhancements are required. Adapt it to your needs. Also, this may be used as a group or partner project. After completing this assignment, assign the students to write a status update for each chapter or section of the novel in one of the characterʼs voices. Itʼs a great way to check if they are grasping the most important part of the chapter & it forces them to try to understand what the character is thinking or feeling. For fun and enhanced learning, use the handout for students to create a gift or application relating to the novel. A sample grading rubric is included on the next page of this document. *NOTE: The image of the Facebook page is a grouped image. To manipulate the boxes, you may need to ungroup.

Facebook Project Grading Criteria (Sample) Facebook Wall Must Include (28 pts. possible): -Picture of Character 5 pts. - Write something about yourself (brief description of character like what he/she does for a job, or even a favorite quote) 2 pts. -Information (birthday, hometown, relationship status) 2 pts. -Friends (Minimum of 4 friends showing) 4 pts. -At least 2 status updates 5 pts. -At least 2 ads on the side 5 pts. -At least 2 notes/messages from one or more friends 5 pts. -Points deducted if missing any of the above, plus: -Neatness (if it s too sloppy to read, no credit for that item) -Effort -Does not relate to the character or reading assignment Facebook Status Updates (+3 pts. per chapter): -Each status update should summarize the most important thing that happened to that character (or what that character thinks is the most important information to share). For example, if someone close to the character dies and you write for your update: Couldn t find a thing to wear today! Guess I must go shopping. Chances are you will get a zero, because even if a character is that self-centered, they would probably include something like: Have to go to Bob s funeral today what in the world am I going to wear?? Guess I have to go shopping! -Points deducted if missing any chapters, plus: -Not relating to the chapter or character -Spelling/grammar mistakes (that are unintentional) Facebook Profile Page (20 pts. possible): -Answering each worth 1 pt. (17 pts.): -Network (closest city) -Sex -Birthday (if known) -Hometown -Relationship status -Political views -Religious views -Activities (list at least one) -Interests (need at least one) -Favorite Music -Favorite TV shows -Favorite Movies -Favorite Books -Favorite Quotations -On side bar: -Networks -Relationship Status -Birthday -Worth 3 pts. total: -About Me (list at least 3 things; 1 pt. each)
