Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All-Stars with Special Guest Harold Lopez-Nussa Trio Fri Jan 19 8PM $33 to $68 Many of these veteran Cuban musicians have careers dating back to the 1950s Havana scene. The big band performs all styles of Cuban music and features rhythms from African traditions dating back to slavery. Afro-Cuban All-Stars speak to the hearts of the downtrodden with an exuberant and upbeat spirit. Quetzal Mariachi Flor de Toloache Sat May 5 8PM $33 to $53 A pairing that soars. The bilingual Chicano band Quetzal hails from East Los Angeles and has been mixing folk, R&B, and rock for over 20 years to encourage social and political change. Mariachi Flor de Toloache broke the gender barrier as an all-female mariachi band from New York, but it s their infectious music that nabbed them a Latin Grammy nomination.

La Nueva Cuba! The Next Generation Roberto Fonseca Daymé Arocena Pedrito Martinez Group Sat Apr 21 8PM $33 to $53 The island nation s musical traditions explode as three next-gen jazz artists converge for the first time on the VPAC stage. Afro-Latin percussionist-singer Pedrito Martinez brings his lightning-fast drumming skills, vocalist Daymé Arocena lets loose a powerful voice that breaks free like a cry from Havana, and Roberto Fonseca demonstrates why the New York Times called him a charismatic spark plug of a pianist. Anat Cohen Tentet Musical Director, Oded Lev-Ari Thu Nov 30 8PM Israeli clarinet virtuoso Anat Cohen is the charismatic female bandleader who stands out in a predominantly male environment. Cohen s tapestry of sounds captures the jubilation of many genres, spanning modern and traditional jazz, classical music, klezmer, Brazilian choro, and Argentine tango.

Amir ElSaffar s Two Rivers Ensemble Thu Apr 26 8PM $28 to $65 Onstage with the artists Jazz trumpeter Amir ElSaffar was born to an American mother and an Iraqi father. After studying classical music in the U.S. and Iraqi maqam music in Baghdad, he forged his own path by mixing ornaments and microtones from Arab music with melodies and harmonies from the West. His unique fusion has won him accolades from Downbeat magazine and rowdy ovations at the Newport Jazz Festival. Step Afrika! Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence Fri Feb 9 8PM Step Afrika! is rooted in the African tradition of Gumboot, bringing the tradition into the 21 st century with an American blend of percussive movement and electrifying rhythms. Set against a backdrop of 60 colorful panels by famed painter Jacob Lawrence, their theatrical piece, Migration, tells the story of African American families in the early 1900s who migrate to the urban north to escape sharecropping and poverty in the rural south.

Leilah Broukhim Dejando Huellas (Traces) Sun Jan 21 7:30PM Flamenco powerhouse Leilah Broukhim returns to VPAC after her wildly popular performance in 2015, this time with Dejando Huellas (Traces), a personal story about her own Jewish and Persian heritage. Broukhim s furious flamenco footwork exalts the Spanish art form, while her emotional expression tells the tale of a woman searching for meaning and identity. Dejando Huellas makes its LA debut after performances in Paris, New York, Madrid, and Copenhagen. Flamenco Legends by Javier Limón: The Paco de Lucía Project Sat Nov 4 8PM For fifty years the feverish and fierce art of flamenco guitar has spread like wildfire from Spain to points around the globe, ignited by the late Paco de Lucía. Honoring that legacy, 10-time Latin Grammy winner Javier Limón reassembles the original band that toured with Paco de Lucía in this tribute performance, The Paco de Lucía Project.

The Sachal Ensemble Song of Lahore Tue Nov 14 8PM $28 to $65 Onstage with the artists Faced with persecution after Sharia law was instituted in Pakistan in 1977, music producer Izzat Majeed convened a devoted group of Lahore musicians to rehearse and record privately. Fueled by a love of American jazz, the ensemble merges Eastern and Western music, crafting a sound that transcends war and oppression. Musician Nijaat Ali says, God willing, this will help the entire world see that Pakistanis are artists, not terrorists. ile Special Guest Gaby Moreno Sat Nov 18 8PM $33 to $63 A double-bill that will go straight to the heart. Each boasts a Grammy win, and each serves up a unique blend. ile hails from Puerto Rico and spent a decade with her brothers in the band Calle 13. Her recent album combines alt-rock with traditional boleros. Moreno left Guatemala as a child and now calls Los Angeles her home. Her guitar and bluesy vocals move easily between pop, soul, and classic Latin sounds.
