SAMLE MASS O REEMTION INTROUCTORY NOTES Mass o Redemption is a collection o ritual music or the Eucharistic liturgy It provides assemblies with an accessible, uniied setting, yet oers parishes maximum lexibility to accommodate a variety o musical resources and to meet the needs o a changing liturgical year The setting was commissioned by the Order o the Most Holy Trinity to celebrate the 00th anniversary o the ounding o the Order The original commissioned setting has been expanded or publication The title celebrates the mission o the Trinitarians, ounded in 119 by St ohn ematha, whose goal was to orm a religious order whose purpose would be the ransoming o those held captive" According to the Order's constitutions, Trinitarian brothers, through their ministry o charity and redemption, commit themselves to help all who suer uncommon hardships, especially those who suer or the aith or who are poor" A proect like this takes shape only with the input and support o many Thanks to r Albert Anuszewski, OST, or his conidence and patience Special thanks to Tom Strickland o WL or his helpul suggestions and keen editorial eye Thanks to Mike Koller, my chie supporter, critic, and prooreader And thanks to the sta, liturgy committee, and music ministers o St Alphonsus Liguori arish in rospect Heights, Illinois, who allow me to share my gits with them, and who, by their example and good humor, inspire and nurture me Vocal resources The settings in Mass o Redemption are written or the Sunday assembly with the leadership o a cantor The choral writing is twopart (women and men), with an optional soprano descant, making the settings accessible to choirs in small parishes as well as to a variety o ensembles in larger parishes In several places the men's part oers an alternative lower note or those who cannot reach the higher part I unison singing is the norm on most Sundays, choral parts could be used to highlight signiicant easts and the estive seasons The optional descant may be used with twopart choir or as an embellishment to unison singing Instrumental resources Mass o Redemption is scored or a variety o instrumental ensembles The settings may be accompanied by keyboard alone (organ or piano), or by keyboard and a variety o instrumental combinations Guitar chord symbols are included throughout or estive occasions, instrumental parts are provided or brass quartet (two trumpets and two trombones) and two timpani The collection also includes music or two woodwinds (not to be used in combination with brass), and or handbells Handbells may be used with either brass or woodwind ensembles In addition, the Trumpet I part can be used alone Sung presider texts A number o these settings, particularly the eucharistic acclamations, work well with chants provided in the Sacramentary or with other amiliar ormulas Such reerences, including suggested starting pitches, are included In several places a new chant pattern is provided A complete musical setting o the Eucharistic rayer or Masses or Special Needs and Occasions I is also published All o the presider s texts and two acclamations or the assembly are set to music The editions are listed on the back cover

SAMLE MASS O REEMTION ERORMANCE NOTES Kyrie This setting is included when the Kyrie is sung ollowing enitential Rite A The music is derived rom enitential Rite C; the notation includes Greek and English texts Litany o raise or God's Mercy; enitential Rite C The invocations o the litany are chanted by the cantor, while the metered Lord, have mercy" is sung by the cantor and repeated by the assembly Thirteen sets o invocations are provided, including our or Advent, our or Lent, our or Ordinary Time, and one or weddings The chant pattern can easily accommodate additional invocations A simple, chanted setting o the presider's absolution text is included as well Rite o Sprinkling; Wash Us with resh Water This piece employs a unison ostinato rerain (repeated continuously by the assembly), and ive optional verses and our woodwind obbligatos that may be layered on top o the rerain ad lib Woodwinds and verses would not be used simultaneously Recognizing that many parishes begin the Gloria during the sprinkling o the assembly, particularly during the Easter season, the verses, adapted rom salm 51, are penitential in character ew parishes will need all the verses and lute options during a sprinkling ritual, but the options will come in handy should the piece be used in other ways, or example during a communal reconciliation liturgy or parish mission, or during the Lenten season Glory to God The Glory to God is responsorial in orm, and can be perormed by cantor and/or choir and assembly Verse two includes two short petitions that are repeated by the assembly These should not require any prior rehearsal In verse three the assembly punctuates the three statements o praise with the short acclamation Glory! Glory!" I the assembly is learning the setting without a congregation card or worship aid, the acclamation and entrances should be rehearsed beorehand One note o the rerain changes ater verse three, but the harmony will lead the assembly to the new note The assembly repeats the simple Amen" ater the cantor or choir Gospel Acclamation The Alleluia is similar to the rerain o the Gloria Ideally, the cantor will gesture or the assembly to stand as the introduction begins The proper verse rom the Lectionary should be sung to the chanted verse pattern

SAMLE Lenten Gospel Acclamation The Lenten Gospel Acclamation is shorter than the Alleluia, but uses the same chanted verse pattern Though the season would suggest a simple perormance, instrumental parts are included should additional ornamentation be desired, or example at a Chrism Mass or during the Evening Mass o the Lord's Supper General Intercessions As indicated, the twopart intercession pattern can accommodate either a or that " ormat or That may " ormat arish ministers may wish to experiment with other structures as well Except or the pickup notes, the melody o the cantor's invitation is the same as the assembly's response Eucharistic Acclamations Settings are provided or the Holy, Holy, Holy, all our Memorial Acclamations, and the oxology and Great Amen The sung preace dialogue and preace patterns notated in the Sacramentary coordinate The dialogue begins on ; the preace on G A memorial acclamation invitation amiliar to many presiders, though not ound in the Sacramentary, is included with the acclamations The melody o this invitation can be heard in several o the Memorial Acclamations, as well as in the opening phrase o the Holy, and in verses one and three o the Gloria Two chant settings o the doxology text are included Option A is known as the Chicago pattern," and is amiliar to many Option B is taken rom the Sacramentary Communion Rite A unison setting o the Lord's rayer is provided or those who wish to add musical unity to the Communion Rite A simple chant or the Embolism is provided or singing presiders As another option, the popular chant adaptation o the Lord's rayer, by Robert Snow, coordinates well when the starting note is The Lamb o God is written or cantor/choir and assembly and includes a repeat ater me" assembly response Each line is sung entirely by cantor or choir; the assembly repeats Have mercy on us" The irst section can be repeated as needed, using other titles or Christ The second section, concluding with Grant us peace," always concludes the litany The Grant us peace" may be repeated Though not included in this collection, The Hand o the Lord eeds Us, also published by World Library ublications, 56, is a communion song that works well with the Communion Rite settings included here Conceived or the communion procession, the piece includes an ordinary" scriptural rerain and many verses, including seasonal verses, in litany orm These allow the song to be ended or extended as needed The orm is simple enough to accommodate original texts written or particular communities or occasions
