DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BOWDOIN COLLEGE EVENTS FALL 2009 * * * * * * George Lopez, piano Saturday, September 12 at 3:00 PM Laureate of several international competitions including the Xavier Montsalvatge Competition for 20th Century Piano Music in Barcelona, George Lopez has performed extensively in Europe, South America, Japan and the U.S and has taught piano at Phillips Exeter Academy since 1999. He will perform the 24 études, opus 10 and opus 25 of Fréderic Chopin. VentiCordi Saturday, September 19 at 3:00 PM An ensemble featuring Kathleen McNerney (oboe), Wren Saunders (bassoon), Dean Stein (violin) plus basso continuo will perform works by Bach, Zelenka and contemporary composer John Steinmetz. Teatime Concert: Haydn Piano Trios Friday, September 25 at 4:00 PM This concert celebrates the bicentenary of the death of Franz Joseph Haydn with the performance of two his piano trios. Performers are Mary Hunter (violin), chair of Bowdoin's Music Department, James Parakilas (piano), chair of the Music Department at Bates, and Steven Witkin (cello), principal cellist of the Colby Symphony.
Teatime Concert: Hilary & Duncan Cumming, violin & piano Friday, October 2 at 4:00 PM Hilary Cumming, a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Indiana, and her husband Duncan, a Maine native and graduate of Bates College and Boston University, are on the faculty of the University of Albany. The duo will perform works by Schubert, Brahms and Dvořák, as well as a piece by Bates composer William Matthews. Dunya Wednesday, October 14 at 7:30 PM Dunya is a Boston-based ensemble devoted to presenting a wide variety of Turkish music, often in conversation with other Western and world musics. This performance will feature a trio of musicians playing the refined and spiritual music of the Ottoman court. Ingrid Jensen, trumpet And Project O with special guest Grace Kelly Friday, October 23 at 7:30 PM Trumpet-player and bandleader Ingrid Jensen, a native of Canada and graduate of Berklee College of Music, will lead the ensemble: Grace Kelly, sax; Jon Wikan, percussion; IJ, trumpet and effects; and, Gary Versace, organ and piano. Saturday & Sunday, December 5 & 6 at 2:30 PM The Bowdoin Chorus directed by Anthony Antolini 63 with tenor soloist Martin Lescault performs Sergei Rachmaninoff s All-Night Vigil (Vespers), Opus 37. Written in 1915, this hour-long work for 8-part unaccompanied voices is considered Rachmaninoff s greatest choral work.
