About This Title Copying the Poems is a series of copywork books that pull together classic, thematically related poems and related scriptures. Soon to be available in a wide range of font styles and several progressive levels, each book draws from well-loved poetry worthy of study and enjoyment, and related passages of scripture to develop a strong and inherent love for language, rhyme, and meter while practicing printing and handwriting skills. Copying the Poems: The Voice of Spring ZB 2-A includes the complete text of three well-known poems which reveal themes centered around the delight of newly wakening life, and four selections from scripture relating to spring. The poems have been presented in a simplified format for copying by the youngest copyists. The typical capitalization at the beginning line of each poem has been removed and replaced with standard capitalization. The layout has also been modified to break the poems into lesson-sized portions. Advanced levels will retain more of the traditional formatting features of poetry. ZB 2-A uses a Zaner-Bloser manuscript style font, with the spacing of 1/2 and is appropriate for beginners who have learned to form their letters ZB 2-A About This Title 5
(mastery is not required), and are starting to form smaller letters. One sentence, line, or verse is generally presented per lesson. No models for tracing are provided as extensive research into the development of neural pathways during writing instruction points to detrimental effects during the tracing process. (Please see the presentations available at http://www.peterson-handwriting.com for details.) ZB 2-A About This Title 6
How to Use This Book This copywork book is a stand-alone title and includes the entire text of three well-known poems related to spring: The Voice of Spring by Mary Howitt, Nest Eggs by Robert Louis Stevenson, originally published in A Child's Garden of Verses, and Daffodils also known as I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth. Interspersed amongst the poems are four scripture passages that focus the heart and mind on the delight that God brings to the hearts of mankind when new life springs forth from the earth He has created. Quick reference charts with numbers and arrows are provided for upper case, lower case, and numerals for children to use as they work on their lessons. Simply print these out and have them available for children to glance at as needed to refresh their memories. Decorative illustrations are included and may be colored if desired. Space for free-form drawings is also provided to encourage creativity, they appear as empty frames throughout the book. Blank template pages for additional writing and drawing space are provided in the appendix. ZB 2-A How to Use This Book 7
If your children are in the early reading stages, read through each lesson with them before asking them to copy it. When their work is completed, read their printed words, following along with your finger once their lesson is finished. Because poetry does not naturally lend itself to being chopped into short lesson segments necessary for young copyists, taking the time to read the entire poem through each day will help your children develop an ear for poetic language. The full text of each poem is included with the traditional presentation in the appendix for easy reading. Each of the selected poems is an excellent choice for memorization, and has a history of being used in that capacity. I encourage you to use these copywork lessons to reinforce the addition of any of these selections to your memory period. Verbally prompting your children to draw connections between the Bible verses shared, the poems, and their own life experiences will also prove to be rewarding. Enjoy your time with these classic poems! ZB 2-A How to Use This Book 8
