Information for Applicants Teacher of Music TIFFIN SCHOOL engage aspire excel www.tiffin.kingston.sch.uk Thank you for your interest in this post. I do hope that in reading this information about the post and School, and by looking at our website, you will feel inspired to submit an application. With a vibrant and friendly staff, and a location close to Kingston town centre, Tiffin is an excellent school to work in. I look forward to receiving your application. Mike Gascoigne, Headteacher Tiffin School: Introduction and Background Tiffin School is a boys selective state school of 1,200 pupils located in the centre of Kingston upon Thames. Its origins date back to 1638, and it has occupied its current site in the heart of Kingston since 1929. Today, Tiffin School is one of the leading state schools in the country, educating boys from Kingston and its surrounding areas in South West London. The School attracts boys from a wide range of diverse backgrounds, and is judged to be outstanding by Ofsted. The School is highly acclaimed for its ethos of combining the outstanding academic achievement of a traditional grammar school environment, with a wide offering of activities particularly in sport and the performing and creative arts. Rugby, cross-country, rowing, basketball, badminton, cricket and tennis all thrive, and regular Saturday fixtures are held at our sports grounds at Hampton Court. This is captured in the School s vision statement Inspiring students to engage, aspire and excel. Music at Tiffin School At Tiffin, music represents an exceptionally important part of the school curriculum, and of the co-curricular life of the school. To learn more, visit: https://sites.google.com/tiffin.kingston.sch.uk/music/ Pupils who have begun their musical journeys at Tiffin have performed with the UK s finest orchestras and soloists, recorded soundtracks for Hollywood films and toured the world, all whilst still pupils at the school. Altogether, Tiffin s choirs, instrumental ensembles and soloists, participate in over 40 musical performances each year. A list of recent performances (below) will give you an impression of the school s busy and varied music calendar. The Tiffin Boys Choir, one of the UK s leading boys choirs, works regularly with professional orchestras and choruses, including all major London orchestras, performing at venues including the Royal Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, Festival Hall, and Barbican. The choir has recently appeared on national radio and television, including BBC, ITV and Classic FM, and tours annually to destinations which have included Europe, China and Australasia. This year they will record with the Gabrieli and Dunedin consorts. In spring each year, the Tiffin Boys Choir alone performs a major work, recently Bach s St. John and St. Matthew Passions, Fauré and Duruflé Requiems and Haydn The Creation. Each autumn, the choir is joined by members of the school s wider community (parents, staff and, typically, more than fifty new Year 7 pupils) to form Tiffin s 200-strong Oratorio Choir. Recent performances have included Bernstein Chichester Psalms, Mendelssohn Elijah and Dvorak Stabat Mater.
Alongside the School s choirs, many instrumental ensembles rehearse in the music department each week. These include a Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Swing Band, Wind Band, Brass Band, String Orchestra and various chamber music groups, including string quartets, clarinet choir, a wind quintet and jazz combo. Tiffin s musicians have recently performed symphonies by Dvorak, Beethoven and Haydn, concertos by Bach, Grieg and Corelli, and quartets by Ravel and Mozart. In the musical productions recently staged at Tiffin (Les Miserables, West Side Story) all roles (including cast, chorus, orchestra and crew) were performed by students. Tiffin supports opportunities for its most advanced instrumentalists in the form of the Thames Youth Orchestra and Thames Youth Jazz Band, by helping to fund staff and by providing rehearsal space. Pupils from Tiffin and Tiffin Girls join pupils from other local schools to give concerts in Kingston, London and abroad on tour each year. The Tiffin Children s Chorus provides opportunities for over sixty young singers from local schools, and plays an important part in headlining local children s concerts (such as Kingston s Festival for the Voice and the Rose Theatre Christmas Concert). All pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 study music, each receiving three, 50-minute curricular lessons per fortnight. A popular choice in Year 10 and beyond, currently over 60 pupils study GCSE and A-level music. Tiffin boys sing from the first week that they arrive at the school. During their first year, every Tiffinian participates in the Year 7 Choir Competition, the House Singing Competition (rehearsed and performed entirely by students) and the Year 7 Jazz Cantata, composed by Tiffin s composer-inresidence. In years 8 and 9, lessons focus on the three key skills of performing, composing and listening, in preparation for the Edexcel GCSE and A-level courses. The Year 7 Instrumental Programme, providing orchestral instruments free of charge and subsidised individual music lessons to Year 7 pupils, has helped to recruit many of the 300 pupils who currently receive individual music lessons at school each week, alongside many more who learn a musical instrument outside school. In recent years, an exceptional number of Tiffin pupils have been awarded music scholarships to study at Cambridge, Oxford and other Russell Group universities, as well as conservatoires including the GSMD. Old Tiffinians are currently choral scholars at Caius, Jesus, King s and St. John s Colleges, Cambridge. Others have gone on to perform with, compose for and conduct the Royal Opera, Metropolitan Opera, the Sixteen, Monteverdi Choir, LSO, T-Rex, David Bowie, Elton John and many more. Tiffin s Location: Kingston upon Thames The School s Kingston town site provides all of its teaching and learning facilities and some sports facilities. The School is very fortunate to also have extensive playing fields in Hampton Court, where sport is played every afternoon, and at weekends, and its own boathouse in Kingston. Tiffin is located a 5 minute walk from the town centre, and railway and bus stations, and is easy to travel or commute to: there are regular suburban trains to London Waterloo via either Wimbledon, or Richmond, and buses from Kingston travel to all parts of West and South London.
School Facilities The School has very good facilities which have been developed over the years. The centre of the School is arranged around a garden that has the original 1929 building matched with the award winning, Learning and Resources Centre (LRC) built in 2004. The six main buildings which make up the site, together provide extensive facilities such as twelve fully equipped science laboratories, three art rooms and a drama studio. The music department houses the Walden Hall, a rehearsal and recital hall with adjoining recording studio, a music classroom and music ICT suite, and seven further rooms for individual music lessons and practice. There is a large hall for assemblies which is also used for public performances, as well as a Sports Centre. The School is continuing to follow its master plan for the development of the site, and a new 2-storey building to house a dining hall and 5 more classrooms is opening straight after Easter 2018, after which we are developing an improved Sixth Form area. The School site in Kingston contains our all-weather floodlit artificial pitch. In addition, our playing fields at Hampton Court provide extensive playing facilities for rugby, cricket, cross country and football, and our boathouse, which we run in partnership with Kingston Rowing Club, is by the Thames near the centre of Kingston. We are most fortunate to have such facilities available that allow us to provide a range of sporting opportunities for our students and also provide a source of funding through third party lettings in the evenings and at weekends. Professional Development Tiffin invests in its staff through both internal and external professional development. Yet we also give a trust to our staff, as professionals, to carry out their job with the minimum bureaucracy necessary. All staff undergo induction. In all aspects of the support and administrative life of the School, Tiffin is fortunate to have a dedicated and committed support staff that allow the School to operate in such an effective way.
Staff and their Welfare There are at present about 70 teaching staff and 40 non-teaching staff at Tiffin. The School is a most friendly place to work, and there is an excellent and vibrant mix of both experienced and newer staff. It is a place where young staff can learn and progress, or older staff can hone their talents. There is a very good camaraderie among the staff, helped by the socials and events which are organised. Welfare of staff is a key concern of the management. We have our own salary scales which reflect the local government scales for Outer London, and non-teaching staff are able to join the Local Government Pension Scheme. Where the type of work requires it, uniform and Personal Protective Equipment will be made available. Safeguarding of Children REHABILITATION OF OFFENDERS ACT 1974 (EXCEPTIONS) ORDER 1974 (AS AMENDED IN 2013) Tiffin School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. The post you are applying for is subject to an order under Section 4(4) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Applicants must therefore provide information about all: convictions, cautions, warnings, reprimands, binding over or other orders, pending prosecutions, criminal investigations that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013). Equal Opportunities Tiffin School is an equal opportunities employer and its policies, including the need to guard against false assumptions based on an applicant s sex, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, disability, religion, age, marital status, working pattern, sexual orientation or gender reassignment, are followed at all stages of the selection procedure. A list of recent performances (below) will give you an impression of the school s busy and varied music calendar.
