From: Thurman D. Hollins Director of Bands Re: RECRUITMENT INFORMATION The following information is submitted for your assistance and consideration. 1. Please complete Applications for Admission 2. High School Seniors should submit official transcripts. Transcript Request forms should accompany the transcripts. 3. Submit official copy of ACT or SAT Scores. 4. Transfers submit official high school and college transcripts. Transfer Approval Form and Transcript Request forms should accompany the transcripts. 5. Submit 2 letters of recommendation. Attach Recommendation Forms from website. 6. Submit a copy of social security card. 7. Submit a local police record. The Police Record form must accompany the police record. 8. Submit a copy of a medical physical and an updated shot record. The Student Health and Counseling Service Form must company the physical and shot record and signed by a physician. 9. Please complete Financial Aid Information (FASFA, Financial Aid Application, Copy of Parents 1040 Tax forms, Dependent Verification Form and/independent Verification.) 10. It is important that application for housing be completed immediately to insure oncampus housing. If any students have problems with housing, they should contact Mr. Thurman D. Hollins at (919) 5306438 12. Housing is limited on campus; therefore, it is imperative that you apply for housing immediately. You will be issued a housing application upon acceptance by the university. The deposit of $150 must accompany your housing application. 13. Reporting dates for Summer Band Camp will be determined at a later date. 14. Clarinets, saxophones, piccolos, trombones, and trumpets are reminded that they will need an instrument as the college has limited number of these instruments. 15. Remember to exercise daily so that you will be in top physical condition. Audition music will consist of scales, sight reading, technical studies or solos, and the content of the marching folder. Located in the culturally rich of Durham, North Carolina, students can concentrate their experiences and academic in business; computer science, teacher education, the natural sciences, mathematics, interdisciplinary studies, theater and film, adult education, community development, communications, and military science. The University has a main campus accommodating 64 facilities. Durham is the primary beneficiary of North Carolina Central University s innovative Community Services Program, which insures that NCCU students have experience with voluntary public service. NCCU students serve as tutors in local schools, help build Habitat for Humanity housing, assist with a variety of youth programs, promote the causes of nonprofit service agencies, and volunteer in a variety of other endeavors as they meet the university s standard of 15 hours of community service per semester. North Carolina Central University To: Prospective Band Members/Upperclassmen From: Thurman D. Hollins, Director of Bands Re: Audition Requirements AUDITION REQUIREMENTS A. AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Major scales ascending and descending played in two or three octaves when possible. The scale should be in eighth notes, quarter 144 mm, if possible. Be prepared to slur or tongue the scales upon request. 2. Perform the listed chromatic scale throughout the practical range of the instrument, slurred in 16 th notes with quarter note120 mm. Trombones should play the chromatic scale at mm=84. 3. Perform two (2) solo excerpts which demonstrate lyrical and expressive qualifies as well as appropriate level of technical facility. Accompaniment optional. 4. Sightreading will be administered during campus auditions. INSTRUMENT MAJOR SCALES CHROMATIC SCALE Piccolo Performed at least four flat D to A6 Flute and four sharp scales in two C to C6 Clarinets (All) or three octaves when E to G6 Oboe possible. C to C1 Saxophones (All) Bb to F2 Bassoon for priority consideration, Bb to G3 Trumpet advance players should Low F to High C French Horn perform all major scales Low F to High A Trombone throughout the practical Low E to Bb Baritone (Treble or Bass Clef) range on the instrument. Low E to Bb Tuba Low E to Bb Xylophone F to C3 1/2 4

B. SPECIFIC PERCUSSION REQUIREMENTS 1. Snare Drum Requirements: a. Perform one (1) solo excerpt which demonstrates lyrical and expressive qualifies as well as appropriate level of technical facility. b. Twentysix (26) standard rudiments and ten (10) hybrid rudiments. 2. Xylophone Requirements: Special scholarships awarded to percussionist whose auditions include xylophone and/or timpani solos. NOTE: All percussionists are required to audition on snare drum. Instrument placements will be determined by the Director of Bands and/or the Percussion Instructor. C. VIDEO AUDITION PROCEDURES Please read the instructions carefully and complete before you begin your audition video. Auditions should be limited to five (5) to seven (7) minutes in length. 1. Recording Instructions a. Record your audition on a highquality video equipment for best results. If possible record you audition in an acoustically dead room (no noise, no echo). b. Review the format and order of the exercises requested. Do one or two rehearsal auditions before you begin recording. c. At the beginning of the video, verbally record your name and address (include city and state). When you have completed the audition, view the entire video and follow the instruction sheet to make sure nothing has been omitted. Send video links or clips to thollin2@nccu.edu.
