TEXT FALSE HEROES IN TODAY S SOCIETY Young people seem to talk about celebrities like David Beckham, Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus as their heroes. Yet, in the past, heroes were different. They were people we admired because of their noble acts. They sacrificed themselves for a higher objective: to save other people or to support an ideal. Martin Luther King is an American hero because he fought to win civil rights for blacks. But what have David Beckham or Miley Cyrus done for humanity? Real heroes have inspired people to make sacrifices in order to do something valuable or to benefit society. Do celebrities inspire us to do great things? In contrast to heroes, some people, who have no special talent, have achieved fame without any sacrifice at all. However, they inspire respect in teenagers. Ridiculously, celebrities like LaToya Jackson are famous only because they are relatives of famous people. What contribution to society have they made to merit the attention they receive? People appear to be terribly interested in the lives of celebrities. Some say this is because it is human nature to gossip. Are our lives so dull and empty that we need glamorous celebrities to brighten them up? Perhaps we simply want someone to look up to. Do we admire the fame, wealth and status they have? Why do we admire celebrities? In my opinion, it is because there are no real traditional heroes anymore and celebrities are the next best thing. 1.
