4 ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE FIRST PAPER (ENGHL) (MEMO 06/09) SECTION B: SUMMARY QUESTION 2: SUMMARISING IN YOUR OWN WORDS Read the passage which appears as ADDENDUM B, titled Bhutto Remembered and which consists of six (edited) letters written to Time magazine after her assassination in 2008. 2.1 For each, summarise the main point the writer is making You must use full sentences. Use your own words as far as possible. Number your points from 2.1.1 to 2.1.6. No point may be longer than 10 words. State the number of words used at the end of each point. (6 x ½) (3) 2.1 Bhutto s death might/will be effective in changing politics in Pakistan. (10) 2.2 We need to realise that Bhutto intended to improve matters. (MEMO 06/09) ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE FIRST PAPER (ENGHL) 5 2.2 Based on the information which you have provided in QUESTION 2.1, write a short obituary which, despite some criticism, shows Benazir Bhutto in a positive light. Your obituary should be between 70 and 80 words and in full sentences. Remember to use your own words, as far as possible. While some people argue that Bhutto did little to benefit the Pakistani people and was responsible for her own untimely death, we need to remember that she was a woman of enormous courage and strength. She intended to correct the wrongs of the past and the poor and destitute saw her as their saviour. It is unfortunate that her death will probably be more effective than another term as Prime Minister would have been. (75 words) (7) Use the holistic marking grid below to assess 2.2.
