http://www.millenniumpost.in/newscontent.aspx?nid=111056 A splash of Europe 12 th April. 15 21 latest and award winning European films from many countries will be screened at the 20th edition of European Union Film Festival. The story of a man who runs away from his girlfriend and bumps into a bride who has run away from her wedding, may sound like a typical Bollywood potboiler, but isn t. The romantic comedy titled Committed from Cyprus is among a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries, set for screening at the 20th edition of European Union Film Festival (EUFF), inaugurated on April 8 and is set to go on till April 20. The Instituto Cervantes, the India Habitat Centre and at the Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre are among the venues for the EUFF organised by the delegation of European Union and embassies of EU member states with support of the Federation of Film Societies of India. We have a wonderful collection of films and we decided this year that we wouldn t have films on one particular topic, like in previous years. We decided just to bring to India the new films, the recent film that was the only criteria, Joao Cravinho, Ambassador, European Union to India said. The films deal with subjects ranging from love, resilience, heroism, frustration and triumph. Stories of individuals and their families choosing their destinies while looming behind them is a turbulence, backdrop of history, politics also find place. In this edition, among others we have the story of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but then bumps into a bride who has run away from her wedding! We have the story of a female bullfighter from Spain who takes the country by storm, in an adaptation to Snowhite. We have the Dutch film which brings us the character of Sophie, a happy woman with a perfect marriage who finds love or something else with a choreographer who loves her cooking. So a wide range of very exciting movies, Cravinho said. Films provide glimpses into the life and times of people they portray and help break barriers of languages to bring people together across the world. It is heartening to see that the EU film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditions and has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados, he said.

Watching a movie in theatres also brings people of diverse thoughts and cultures together under one roof and makes them go through similar emotions and thus helps bring individuals together. In Europe, just like India, we have a massive film industry. More or less the same size in terms of films produced each year. We discovered in Europe this cultural industry employs 6.7 million people and accounts for 3.5 per cent of GDP, that is not just of course the cinema but whole cultural industry. At an age when we tend to look more at economics, it is good to remember that culture is also a very much part of our economics, Cravinho said. The festival was inaugurated by Cravinho and Aivars Groza, Ambassador of Latvia to India. Latvia currently holds the EU Presidency. The EU comprises 28 countries. Many of the films have won awards. A selection of the films set to be screened include Blancanieves (Snowhite) is a Spanish film based on the fairy tale Snow White by the Brothers Grimm and is centered on a female bullfighter. A Woman s Revenge is a Portuguese film that captures the life of Roberto who is one of those men to whom the simulation has become the greatest art. The Last Sentence (Sweden) is based on the life of journalist Torgny Segerstedt. Shanghai Gypsy (Slovenia) is a story about four generations of a gypsy family. The Candidate (Slovak) is a cynical black humoured thriller situated in Slovakia during a presidential campaign.

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/best-of-european-films-to-be-screened-indelhi/1/426917.html Best of European films to be screened in Delhi 2 nd April. 15 For 20 years, the European Union Film Festival has handled the mantle of showcasing the best of European cinema in India. And this year is no different. Beginning with Pizzas from Latvia (to be screened at Instituto Cervantes on April 8 at 5 pm) and A Palace Called Home from Greece (to be screened at India Habitat Centre on the same day at 7 pm), 19 more films from countries like Germany, Luxembourg and Cyprus will be screened in the Capital from April 8 to April 20. "Over the course of 20 years, the festival has grown along with the European Union (EU). Back then, there were half the countries in the EU than there are now. The festival itself has grown in terms of the number of Indian cities that screen the films and the number of movies being shown," says Cesare Onestini, deputy head, Delegation of the EU to India. Since it's a special year for the organisers, the film's selection has also been different this time around. Onestini says, "In earlier editions, the focus was on the theme. Past festivals have had youth-centric or women-centric films but this time around, we have chosen to focus on the recent films of European nations. There is a brighter distribution of topics this year." Many popular and critically-acclaimed films are part of the festival this year - the most prominent being Polish film Ida, which won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It will be screened on April 18 at Instituto Cervantes at 5 pm. What is special about this festival, adds Onestini, is that films from all over the European region are represented at the event. "The audience might be familiar with films from the UK, France or Italy, but with this festival they get to watch films from smaller countries as well." The festival will be held across Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months. In Delhi, the films will be screened at Instituto Cervantes and A still from Oscar-winning film Ida. India Habitat Centre.

http://sensbucket.blogspot.in/2015/04/european-union-film-festival-2015-takes.html European Union Film Festival 2015 takes off in Delhi 12 th April. 15 A little late in the day, but people looking at the cultural scene in the capital are going to be having a gala time with the European Union Film Festival 2015 getting underway, at the Instituto Cervantes in Delhi. From the 8th April to the 20th of April, 2015, multiple nation states from the European Union will be showcasing their works of art, using motion pictures as their medium of creativity. A sure-shot go-to place for those who find delicacies of fine moviemaking tingling their nerves, this festival is one of those noted cultural get-together that move beyond the obvious. The setting within which this cultural fiesta was set, had to be equally artsy in the way it was hosted in. Instituto Cervantes had many interesting and eye appealing art pieces which was spread around the basement area of the building. Everything on display seem to have a message, a theme, or simply simply something, which would seriously work the mind to thinking in new dimensions. This was the event that saw the diplomatic elite mix with the art enthusiasts with ease. From people associated with the media, to those who are there simply for the artistic demands, the event had a clear interaction between people who interacted simply for creative means. As Joao Cravinho, the European Union Ambassador put it, "..this is more about a cultural connect." The European Union has long been a cultural hub, and looking for ways to come to other major zones such as India, where art holds such importance in lives of people. The cinema craft has also been one of the major strong points of what has been imported from that part of world, which comprises of 28 nations in the union. Though there is temptation to look at the economic side of such events, which definitely are significant, but cultural exchange and a glimpse into life there, is definitely the bottom-line here at the film festival. The scheduled movies to be broadcasted include Go, Eddy, The Foreigner, Vis-A-Vis, Committed, The Don Juans, The Keeper of Lost Causes, Living Images, Boy Upside Down, Jappeloup, A place called home, The Ambassador to Bern, Pizzas, The symmetry of butterfly, Soof, Ida, A Woman's revenge, The Candidate, Shanghai

Gypsy, Blancanieves, The Last sentence, and The age of cannibals. The inauguration of the festival was with Pizzas, which is about two pizza bakers, Oskars and Matīss. They have huge plans for the future studying at Oxford for instance. But one evening their lives are turned upside down. Most likely they ll be charged guilty with the kidnapping of a child. The film festival is stated to be going on in multiple cities around the country; Delhi and Chennai currently, but spreading to Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, and Coimbatore as well. Entry is free, and will be available on a first come first serve basis. Considering not the majority will be interested, the idea sounds good for those looking to soak in the craft of movie making cutting across genres.

We decided just to bring to India the new films, the recent film that was the only criteria," Joao Cravinho, Ambassador, European Union to India said. We discovered in Europe this cultural industry employs 6.7 million people and accounts for 3.5 per cent of GDP, that is not just of course the cinema but whole cultural industry. At an age when we tend to look more at economics, it is good to remember that culture is also a very much part of our economics," Cravinho said. The Last Sentence (Sweden) is based on the life of journalist Torgny Segerstedt. Shanghai Gypsy (Slovenia) is a story about four generations of a gypsy family. The Candidate (Slovak) is a cynical black humoured thriller situated in Slovakia during a presidential campaign.

http://www.oneworldnews.in/20th-european-film-festival-at-delhi 20th European Film Festival at Delhi 9 th April. 15 A movie theatre is probably the only space where you forget your caste, gender, anger, frustration, tiredness and worries! All sort of people hailing from different walks of life feel same emotions in this large dark room and that s the magic of movies. There were times when the movie-watching experience was thought to go down the drain because of the developments like television and video, however, it survived. With passing years it has been proven that Cinema is a common language that we share at a global level. L-R Mr Aivars Groza, Ambassador of Latvia to India, Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union to India and Mrs. Magdalena Cruz Yábar, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Spain Yesterday a thirteen days European Union Film Festival began wherein the cultural diversity of the European Union and its member states will be displayed. This is the 20th edition of the festival wherein 21 latest and award winning European Films of different genres would be playing at the screen of Instituto Cervantes, Connaught Place, New Delhi. During the inauguration, H.E. Dr Joao Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union to India spoke about the effect on tourism because of such events and the themes they are focusing on, There has been growth in tourism of both the countries. Last time the theme was women, before that it was love and even before, was laughter and so on, this time we have asked the member states of European countries to submit recent films. We have 21 films which have been made recently and this would help the people to understand the kind of issues being dealt in Europe, the thought process of film maker, everyday life etc. Further talking about how he sees Indian Cinema and what difference he finds in European movies and Indian movies, Dr. Cravinho said, Indian Cinema is diversified and quite a fun. I have seen Lunch Box and I believe it very nicely captures the way of thinking of two individuals and explores the emotions in very sensitive way and even Lagaan I believe is one of the movies which stay with us forever. I think movie is a personal experience and choice, I might not

want to see dance and songs but many others from my country or friends would love the same. I think every cinema does a common thing- trying to reach out to audiences and what different is the tradition bollywood and European movie s are built on. European refers to past and looks on to the future too. It is a very rich tradition and enhances consequences around the world because Indian s and American film makers are taking inspirations from European films and also, adapting them. In the past the response has been really good. Last year 20,000 people turned up so I am hoping for an increase this time. Amongst various genre, the festival will tell the story of eleven year old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes; of two opera Directors whose common passion for music is matched by their thirst for love; of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but collides with a bride who has run away from her wedding; of a woman whose life in a mansion somehow mirrors the turbulent changes of an entire century; of a boy who makes unexpected friends while investigating the death of his parents in a car accident; and of the happy householder with the perfect marriage who finds love or maybe something else with a choreographer who loves her cooking. During a conversation with us, Demetrios A. Theophylactou, High Commissioner, Republic of Cyprus, said Film gives a perspective about a person, a culture, a state and a country. They also intrigue curiosity to know more about the certain country. In terms of movie making and culture I think both the countries are similar yet very different. Some elements of our movie making are universal like human centric, social message, political etc. and top of all is love. Each country has their own landscape history and attractiveness; movie becomes an agent to take this to the audience. Bollywood should be encouraged to make movie in Cyprus because tourism is not only about money making but more than that. The film festival, which is currently ongoing in Chennai and Delhi, will further traverse through Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months. If you want to be a part of this festival and witness some of the movies, then here is the schedule for you:

http://www.prlog.org/12444148-delhi-to-host-eu-film-festival-for-next-13-days.html Delhi To Host EU Film Festival For Next 13 Days 8 th April. 15 The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20 th European Union Film Festival that began today in Delhi. The festival brings to Delhi a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries. The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) 2015 was inaugurated today by H. E. Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union to India in the presence of H.E. Mr Aivars Groza, Ambassador of Latvia to India (Latvia currently holds the EU Presidency) and Mrs. Magdalena Cruz Yábar, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Spain with the screening of the Latvian film Pizzas at the Instituto Cervantes, Connaught Place, New Delhi. Speaking about the EUFF, Dr. Cravinho said, Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human. Films give us glimpses into the life and times of people they portray and help break barriers of languages to bring people together across the world. Thus, it is heartening to see that the European Union film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditionsand has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados. This year we have decided to bring latest films from Europe to celebrate the 20th anniversary and we hope that the viewers will enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our earlier editions. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union & Embassies of EU Member States with the support of the Federation of Film Societies of India, the EUFF will be held at the Instituto Cervantes, India Habitat Centre and at Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre, New Delhi from 8 th 20 th April. Celebrating 20 years of bringing European cinema to India, the festival will screen movies from varied genres including comedy, drama, romance and action - many charming and sometimes unsettling stories. The festival will tell the story of eleven year old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes; of two opera Directors whose common passion for music is matched by their thirst for love; of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but collides with a bride who has run away from her wedding; of a woman whose life in a mansion somehow mirrors the turbulent changes of an entire century; of a boy who makes unexpected friends while investigating the death of his parents in a car accident; and of the happy householder with the perfect marriage who finds love - or maybe something else with a choreographer who loves her cooking. The film festival, which is currently ongoing in Chennai and Delhi, will further traverse through Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months.
