Howard Pickering Type Facsimile of an Early English Poem 1) The nutbrowne maid. From the earliest edition of Arnold s Chronicle. London: William Pickering, 1836. 24mo (14 cm, 5.5"). xvi, xxv pp., [4] ff. $175.00 This little volume is one of the four ballads edited by Thomas Wright and published by Pickering in 1836. Keynes says each was printed in an edition of only 150 copies. The introduction and notes are printed in roman, the ballad itself in Caslon gothic letter. There is a wood-engraved vignette on the title-page and three other small wood-engraved cuts, one being an historiated initial, the others tail-pieces. The tale is a variant of the Griselda story that Boccaccio incorporated in the Decameron, a tribute to a woman s unwavering love despite years of abuse. The Nutbrowne Maid was first printed in 1503 in Arnold s Customs of London, in black letter in double-column format. This single-column format version is an early Victorian attempt at a type facsimile. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1836.19; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 96. Original Roxburghe-style binding of quarter maroon morocco and maroon paper covered boards. Partially unopened. Neatly written four-digit number in ink on verso of front free endpaper. Very good. => A very clean, attractive copy. (39224) 2) Bacon, Francis. The two books of Francis, lord Verulam. Of the proficience and advancement of learning, divine and human. London: William Pickering, 1825. 12mo. xvi, 420 pp., lacking fold. table. $40.00 Good Pickering edition of Bacon s work on methodology. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1825.1; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 50. Publisher rose colored cloth. Uncut copy. Small paper shelving label at top of spine. Ex social club library: 19th-century bookplate, call number on endpaper, no other markings. (28152) Printed Using Baskerville s Types Uncut Copy 3) Berners, Juliana. The treatyse of fysshynge wyth an angle. London: Printed... for William Pickering [by Thomas White], 1827. 8vo (19 cm, 7.5"). Frontis., [2], xiii (pagination skips v viii), [1], 41, [1] pp.; 4 plts. $750.00 First Pickering edition of the first known English work on fishing. Reprinted from the Boke of St. Albans, the famed sporting book originally published by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, this essay on angling is generally attributed although not certainly so to Dame Juliana Berners (or

Barnes), supposed prioress of Sopwell nunnery circa 1450. If that attribution is correct, this is not only the earliest printed English work on fishing, but also one of the earliest published English works by a female author. Regardless of its source, it seems to have served as an inspiration both to Izaak Walton and to William Pickering, who printed several editions of Walton, including a particularly lavish production in 1836. The volume is printed with the original language and spelling preserved, and is illustrated with a woodcut frontispiece of a fisherman taken from de Worde s 1518 edition that is cited as the earliest known depiction of an angler fishing with a rod, as well as with six woodcuts (provided at the back of the volume in the form of four plates) showing types of poles, hooks, etc. As the titlepage proclaims, the work was printed with the types of John Baskerville, making it one of the last such printings done in England. A later hand has helpfully added pencilled marginalia clarifying archaic or obscure terms and suggesting subject headers. This copy uncut and in original boards: Rare thus. NSTC 2B20037; Keynes, Pickering, 42. Beyond the scope of Gaskell, Baskerville.; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1827.1. Publisher s dun-colored light boards. Uncut copy. Light overall rubbing; spine with minor loss of paper. Old bookseller s description affixed to front free endpaper; small oval stain to corner of half-title and frontispiece, a bit of light offsetting from plates. A very nice copy in a later open-back cardboard slipcase. (30461) Handsomely Printed Black-Letter Edition of the Wycliffe N.T. 4) Bible. N.T. English (Middle English). 1848. Wycliffe. The New Testament in English translated by John Wycliffe. Chiswick: Pr. by Charles Whittingham for William Pickering, 1848. 4to (25 cm, 9.8"). [10], [248] ff.; 1 plt. $950.00 The only non-greek New Testament published by Pickering. John Wycliffe (d. 1384) is revered as the first to translate the Bible into English as opposed to Anglo-Saxon and, though his heterodox religious opinions brought his translation (and those based on it) into disrepute at the time and well after, it circulated widely in manuscript. This grand Pickering Press edition announces itself as being from an early manuscript ( ca. 1380") that was formerly in the monastery of Sion Middlesex and late in the collection of Lea Wilson, F.S.A (of Norwood), and of that manuscript an extensive description appears as the preface here. Printed in a very handsome and legible English black-letter gothic font on Pouncy handmade paper, this Pickering Wycliffe N.T. is uncut, mostly unopened, and bears a red and black half-title and title-page, with a red and black version of the firm s printer s device incorporating the Aldine dolphin and anchor. The plate, which follows the half-title, depicts a page from the source manuscript, and the prefatory matter is printed in a handsome large roman. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Elizabeth Attwood on the front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 81; Herbert 1868; NSTC 2W19213. Not in Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering; not in Pickering & Chatto, William Pickering (catalogue 708). On Wycliffe, see: Dictionary of National Biography, LXIII, 202 223. Quarter black roan in imitation of morocco and marbled paper covered sides; rubbed with slight loss of leather and paper, corners bowed inward, front board with evidence of one-time crack (well repaired and now solid). Mild to occasional heavy foxing, with most leaves actually quite clean; light agetoning and typical offsetting from print to leaf opposite, throughout; one torn corner. Bookplate and label as above. Good to work with and a pleasure to handle. (38823)

Bishop Burnet s Instructive Lives 5) Burnet, Gilbert. Lives of Sir Matthew Hale and John Earl of Rochester. London: William Pickering, 1829. 12mo (15 cm, 5.9"). [2], v, [1], 174, add. engr. t.-p., 175 330 pp. (first engr. t.-p. lacking). $145.00 Second edition thus of these paired biographies, originally published separately in 1681 and 1680 respectively; but the first Pickering edition. The first work is an admiring tribute, written by a man who knew little of law but who considered Hale s life a pattern of virtue and usefulness; the preface offers a brief and rather biased look at the history of biography. A list of Hale s writings, both published and (then) unpublished, plus a list of the books he left to Lincoln s Inn in his will, are appended. The second work, an account of the legendary libertine, opens with an added titlepage (dated 1820) bearing an engraved portrait by R. Grave (Sir Matthew s engraved half-title not being present in this copy). Both biographies were admirably calculated to enforce the lessons of the moralist (p. iii). NSTC 2B60417; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1829.3; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 56. Period-style quarter light grey cloth and light blue paper covered sides, spine with printed paper label; engraved portrait of Hale lacking. Ex social club library with rubber-stamp on half-titles and main title-page but not the pretty engraved title-page introducing Rochester s life; no other markings. A few leaves with upper outer corners bumped. Nice printing of two much-read and long-respected memoirs. (30337) The Other Side of Chaucer 6) Chaucer, Geoffrey. Chaucer s romaunt of the rose[,] Troilus and Creseide[,] and the minor poems. London: William Pickering [colophon: C. Whittingham, Chiswick], 1846. 12mo (19.3 cm, 7.625"). 3 vols. I: 7, 10 144, [1], 2 230 pp. II: [7], 2 348 pp. III: 7, 2 352 pp. $550.00 Neatly packaged Pickering edition of Chaucer s works beyond The Canterbury Tales, here with an extensive biography of the author from antiquarian Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas (1799 1848), of whom the DNB notes his literary output was considerable and of high quality. The text was produced by the Chiswick Press, with Keynes Pickering device no. iv on all title-pages. Binding: Expertly rebacked 19th-century tan polished calf, covers framed in gilt double fillets, spines with gilt-lettered black and blue leather labels, raised bands, and compartments set off by gilt double fillets. Board edges and turn-ins with foliate zigzag rolls; nonpareil marbled endpapers and edges. Bound by Nutt stamped on endpaper, possibly indicating work by British bookbinder William Henry Nutt of Green Street, Cambridge. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of socialite and world traveler Lady Jane Davy (1780 1855; wife of chemist Sir Humphry Davy) on each front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear of each volume. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1846.2; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 57. On Lady Davy and Sir Nicolas, see: DNB (online). Bound as above; spines sunned to old gold, covers rubbed with small leather loss at corners, two repaired tears plus a few small spots, indents, glue residue, and one cut. Light pencilling on endpapers and small marks on first and last leaf of text in each volume. Faint offsetting (most noticeable on title-page), scattered foxing and some edges unevenly trimmed; a few spotted leaves. A solid and handsome set owned by a fascinating woman. (38362)

Pickering & Whittingham s Seven BCPs 7) Church of England. Book of Common Prayer. [Seven editions of the Book of Common Prayer, 1549 1844 ]. London: William Pickering (pr. by Whittingham), 1844. Folio (35.8 cm, 14"). 7 vols. I: [264] ff. II: [314] ff. III: [134] ff. IV: [130] ff. V: [142] ff. VI: [140] ff. VII: [154] ff. $6500.00 Complete set of Pickering s handsome homages to important editions of the Book of Common Prayer, consisting of six early versions and one contemporary: Edward VI, 1549; Edward VI, 1552; Elizabeth, 1559; James I, 1604; Charles I, 1637 (for the use of the Church of Scotland, commonly called Archbishop Lauds); Charles II, 1662; and Victoria, 1844. The uniform black-letter printing was done by Charles Whittingham the younger, of the Chiswick Press, distinguished for... tasteful design and excellent presswork (Oxford DNB online). The collaboration between Whittingham and Pickering, one of the most important publishers of the 19th century, produced a number of impressive volumes; the present effort is notable for its outstanding typography and its wood-engraved initials and ornaments done by Mary Byfield. The original title-pages are reproduced in facsimile. Provenance: Elegant old lozenge-shaped ink-stamp on title-pages: John Brymer Heir- Loom. Griffiths, Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer, 1844/26 32; Gewirtz, But One Use, 62 (for Victoria, 1844 and discussion of others); Lowndes, 1945; Brunet, I, 1108; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1844.2 7; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 85. Publisher s quarter vellum and marbled paper covered sides, spines with gilt-stamped leather title and volume labels, vellum variously dust-soiled and showing short cracks on some spines (rubbed through in small spots at the feet of two spines); boards and edges rubbed, a few spine labels with small chips or cracks, one volume with hinges (inside) reinforced, two volumes with minor repairs to joints. Bookseller s small ticket on back pastedowns in two volumes; each title-page save one stamped in upper outer corner by a 19th-century collector as above. Occasional minor foxing only, as a rule, with greater spotting in one section of one volume only. Many signatures unopened. (24828) 8) Coleridge, Samuel Taylor. Aids to reflection... Vol. I. London: William Pickering, 1848. 12mo. xx, 338 pp. $65.00 Vol. I (of 2) only. Sixth edition, reprint of enlarged 5th edition, 1843. First published in 1825 as Aids to Reflection in the Formation of a Manly Character, on the several grounds of prudence, morality, and religion. This edition with critical notes by Henry Nelson Coleridge. NSTC 2C30115; Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1843.3, for the first Pickering edition; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 59. 19th-century cloth, spine with printed paper label. Binding a bit warped, sunned on spine, stained and somewhat rubbed; spine label darkened and rubbed; corners bumped. Front hinge (inside) opening just a bit. Spots of soil on endpapers. Ex-library, with bookplate of a 19th-century collector and rubber-stamp ( withdrawn ) on front pastedown; minimal other markings. Light pencil marks in several margins. (18985) By the Mentor, about the Mentee Signed Binding by Hayday 9) Evelyn, John. The life of Mrs. Godolphin. London: William Pickering, 1848. 16mo (17.5 cm, 6.875"). xviii, 291 pp. $300.00

Here in a delightful signed binding, this affectionate account of Mrs. Godolphin s life, by writer and diarist John Evelyn (1620 1706), was passed down through his family until 1847 when Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt allowed its publication with the assistance and editorship of Samuel Wilberforce. Margaret Godolphin (1652 78) was a British courtier married to one of the leading politicians of the time, Sidney Godolphin. She chose Evelyn as a mentor and paternal figure; they remained close until her early death due to complications from childbirth. The volume, one of the third edition, is illustrated by a pensive engraved frontispiece of Mrs. Goldophin, by William Humphreys, from an original painting by Matthew Dixon. The work also includes five genealogical tables. Binding: Black morocco covered boards with beveled edges, covers framed by two sets of blind double-rules and with an embossed center medallion; spine with raised bands, gilt lettering, blind-stamped devices in compartments, and blind rules extending from bands onto covers. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Signed by Hayday. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1847.5 (not noting the 1848 reprints); Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 65. Bound as above. Minor rubbing to spine-ends and joints, scuffs and faint scrapes to boards, corners bumped. Light stains to very edges of frontispiece, offsetting to title-page, and gutter crack to p. 290. Lovely and sturdy overall. (37862) Marked with a Classical Precision to which English Poetry had Yet Rarely Attained 10) Hall, Joseph. Virgidemiarum: satires. In six books. London: William Pickering, Chancery Lane [colophon: Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne & Co.], 1825. 8vo (18.5 cm, 7.25"). 7, [1], xv, [1], 151 pp. $300.00 Pickering publication of the bishop of Norwich s personal satires, originally printed in 1597 and 1598, and noted by the DNB as the first collection of formal verse satires on the Latin model to be published in England. This imprint represents more than meets the eye: This book was first published by W. & C. Tait, Edinburgh, 1824. Evidently Pickering bought a part of the edition and inserted his own titlepage (Keynes). Someone has inked only 100 copies printed on the bottom margin of the titlepage. Provenance: Bookplate of Allan D. MacDonald on front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1825.6; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.),69. 19th-century polished calf, spine with gilt red leather label and florally giltstamped compartments, covers double-ruled in gilt with blind oblong rolls within, board edges decorated in gilt curly roll; marbled endpapers, all edges stained red, binding ever so gently rubbed. Light pencilling on endpapers, evidence of removed bookplate; provenance evidence/inknote as above, light age-toning with the occasional spot and two small pencil marks. A lovely, clean, attractive book. (37853)

As Faithful Representations of the Originals As Can Well Nigh Be Conceived 11) Holbein, Hans, illus. Icones Veteris Testamenti; illustrations of the Old Testament, engraved on wood, from designs by H. Holbein. London: William Pickering [Charles Whittingham], 1830. 8vo (20 cm, 7.875"). 14, [180] pp.; XC plts. $225.00 First Pickering edition reproducing some of well-known 16th-century artist Holbein s early work. Following an introduction by woodcutter siblings Mary & John Byfield are ninety different woodcuts depicting passages from the Old Testament, each with the English verse printed below and the text in Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish on the following page. Keynes device no. iv appears on the title-page with device no. iii at the end. Provenance: A small binder s ticket of Remnant & Edmonds of London appears at back with a small blue and white bookplate of book designer and typographer Lester Douglas on front pastedown; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ( AHA ) at rear. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1830.11; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), p. 72; Pickering & Chatto, William Pickering (catalogue 708), 173; NSTC 2H25927 & 2B30767. Quarter brown roan in imitation of morocco over red paper covered boards, spine lettered and title framed in gilt; rubbed, spine sunned, spotting on endpapers. Light agetoning gently darkening towards edges with the rather occasional marginal spot or stain and one gathering loosening but firmly attached; uncut with a few unopened leaves, one témoin. Booklabels and binder s ticket as above, a small marginal check mark and number in pencil. A pleasing production with the perfect provenance. (39010) Pickering s Miniature Horace A Pretty & Partially Unopened Copy 12) Horatius Flaccus, Quintus (i.e., Horace). Quintus Horatius Flaccus. [i.e., Opera omnia]. Londini: Gulielmus Pickering [colophon: excudebat C. Corrall], 1826. 32mo (near miniature: 9 cm, 3.5"). Frontis., add. engr. t.-p., 192 pp. $425.00 The first work in William Pickering s Diamond Classics miniature series, here in its third issue: a tiny volume of Horace s works, containing Carminum, Epodon liber, Satirarum, Epistolarum, and Ars Poetica. The Opera was Corrall and Pickering s first joint project for the series, and was first published in 1820 and then again in 1824. In the present copy, the frontispiece is dated 1828, the engraved title-page 1826, the printed title-page 1824, and the colophon 1826; Kelly does not list either an 1826 or an 1828 issue, but does describe an 1829. While the publication date may be confused, this is certainly the third and final Diamond Classics issue of the work that launched that important series. Binding: 19th-century tan morocco backed marbled paper covered boards, spine with giltstamped title, gilt-tooled compartments, and gilt-dotted raised bands; upper edges gilt; original silk bookmark present and attached. Kelly, Checklist of Books Published by William Pickering, 1829.9; Keynes, William Pickering (rev. ed.), 63; Welsh 3565 (described as 1826). Bound as above, light rubbing to edges and extremities; silk bookmark present as noted, and back free endpaper with attractive small silver Japanese bookseller s ticket. Occasional mild foxing; many signatures unopened. An attractive copy of a classic miniature in a classic series of them. (36942)

Tribute to One of the Great 19th-Century Bookpeople With Original Leaves 13) Kelly, Jerry, comp. A checklist of books published by William Pickering 1820 1853. Pomona, NY: The Kelly-Winterton Press, 2004. 8vo (21.8 cm, 8.6"). x, 56, [3] pp.; 56 plts. $125.00 A handsome and useful bibliography of the prominent bookseller and publisher s work, enhanced with essays by Joseph Blumenthal and Arthur Warren and illustrated with a number of truly splendid reproductions of title-pages and portions of text, many in black and red and the famous Euclid in full color. The front cover features Pickering s Aldine-inspired dolphin and anchor device. This leaf book is one of 300 copies printed, and includes four tipped-in leaves from Pickering publications. The present example is type C as described in Disbound and Dispersed. Disbound and Dispersed 229. Publisher s blue paper covered boards with black cloth shelfback, front cover with gilt-stamped printer s vignette and spine with gilt-stamped title. A fresh, clean copy of this elegantly produced homage. (36841) National Poetry Neatly Packaged 14) King, Richard John, ed.; Sir Walter Scott, et al. Selections from the early ballad poetry of England and Scotland. London: William Pickering [colophon: Printed by C. Whittingham, Chiswick], 1842. 16mo (17 cm, 6.625"). viii, [1], ii xl, [3], 4 291, [1] pp. $275.00 Pickering collection of English and Scottish ballads, made in the hope of diffusing a more general acquaintance with the National Poetry of our country, with a lengthy introduction and selections from Sir Walter Scott and Bishop Percy, among others. The text is elegantly printed with wood-engraved decorative initials and architectural headpieces (some signed H.G., i.e., Henri Gérente, the acclaimed Paris-based glass painter entrusted with the restoration of the Sainte- Chapelle and with the design of the west window of All Saints, London); the monumental woodengraved title-page signed H. Gerente del. is printed in black and red with the Aldine device incorporated into the design.
