Christmas Potourri Potourri - a collection containing a variety o sorts o things Christmas Potourri is a collection o some o my avorite, but not always amiliar, Christmas carols with not a hint o Jingle Bells to be ound! But it s much more than that. It s also a collection o dierent ensembles. Within the iece there are ull band sections, s, duets, woodwind quartet, brass choir, woodwind choir, horn quartet and several other ensembles. There s even a big band section. The sections are tied together with a tuba Bb drone. With this drone you can dro entire sections that don t it the abilities o your students or adjust the length o the iece to it time restraints. Measure 4 is a big band section that really needs to swing. You might want to cut it to one on a art and/or have the members stand to lay this section. Whatever you do, don t let it drag. Consider taking it in cut time to hel kee it moving. The ercussion can be a big hel in keeing it ushing ahead. I wrote O Come, O Come Emmanuel with horn quartet in mind, understanding that not everyone has enough horns to cover all the arts, esecially the low horn art. The irst otion is to add the euhonium art. You can have them suort the low horn art or have them cover the art comletely and have all your second horns lay the to notes. The next otion is to add saxes as needed to suort the horns. The inal otion is to turn the horn quartet into a sax quartet. You may choose to simly end at measure 179 or let the tuba(s) lay the cute tag. I you use the tag, don t be araid to stretch out the Bb drone in the tubas irst to trick the audience into execting another carol beore hitting them with the quick and cute We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I hoe you and your audience enjoy my Christmas Potourri. As with good otourri, don t be araid to adjust it to your ersonal taste. About the Comoser - - - Randy Veazey grew u in McGehee, Arkansas where he was an All-State horn layer or three years. He attended Louisiana Tech University and received a B.A. and M.A. in Instrumental Music Education. While at La. Tech, he studied instrumental conducting with Ray Young, horn and trumet with Bob Cheatham, and ercussion and arranging with Gray Barrier. Randy started his ublic school teaching career in 1984 in Canton, Texas. He s taught band at all levels rom 5th grade through high school. Randy s been in the Houston area since 1994 sending the majority o his time teaching 5th and 6th grade beginners at Mitchell Intermediate School in The Woodlands, Texas. He erorms with The Houston Symhonic Band as a member o both the horn and ercussion sections. He also lays horn in The Woodlands Brass, subs on horn or The Regal Brass and reelances in the Houston area on both horn and ercussion. Ater many years o teaching, Randy decided to renew his interest in arranging.
