2017 Audition Script & information

ConcordQuest 2017 Audition Information Must be entering 8 th grade or beyond in fall 2017 to be allowed to audition for roles. PLEASE NO ONE YOUNGER. ConcordQuest is programmed for K 7 th grade to attend. We much prefer that these younger students get the FULL experience of ConcordQuest, and the classrooms are a vital part of that experience. AUDITIONS: We conduct closed auditions, meaning we only want the judges and the person auditioning at that time in the room. Auditions will be held in the E building Chapel. o Sunday, March 19 from 2:00 6:00 o Monday, March 20 from 4:00 7:00 o If we are undecided about who to choose for a character, we will call you and ask you to come back on Tuesday, March 21 st for a very short time. o You must sign up online to audition; we will contact you with your specific audition time. http://fbconcord.org/cqauditions Theme verse: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12 (NIV) EXTRAS If you are interested in being an extra and not interested in auditioning for a speaking role, just sign up online at http://fbconcord.org/cqauditions and check the Extras ONLY box on the form. You will be contacted after auditions week. The same age requirements apply here too.

ConcordQuest 2017 Dates o June 13-16 A week of evening dress/tech rehearsals o June 18 Kick off Sunday (dress rehearsal that afternoon) o June 19-23 CQ in the morning & daily rehearsals for the next day s scene o June 23 Evening performance for the community o June 25 AM Baptism Services! Auditioning (Insiders Information) We want you to have the best audition you can, and to have fun doing it. Sometimes nerves can get the best of us, but we will do our best to reduce any of your audition jitters. This is why we request that the auditions be closed auditions so that we don t have a lot of other people in the room. Here are a few tips that may help you prepare: Memorization is not required, but it could certainly help your audition. You should be able to act and express the lines; NOT just dramatically read them with your eyes glued to the paper. We hope to see you show physical expression (using your face and body) as well as using your voice. Try to stay in character even when you are not speaking. This means when you are listening to others* speak their lines, you are still acting or reacting like your character would. (*others will be the judges reading the other character s lines). We may ask you to change something about how you deliver a line, or react differently to something another character says. This can show us how well you take direction and adapt. Breathe. Breathing is good. A few deep breaths just before you come up to audition can help calm those nerves. We will call you by the end of the evening Tuesday, March 21 st to let you know if you got a part. If you have any questions about the audition process or have trouble signing up online, please contact Cheri Burt at her work number 865-672-1462 or email cburt@fbconcord.org

CHARACTERS KIDS: ALEX- self-proclaimed leader of the group, not as funny as he thinks he is, very outgoing and has a boring home life. He likes the idea of adventure, but isn t as brave as he puts on yet. Alex thinks that the way to be a bigger man is to make other people feel smaller, and takes this out mostly on Carl, and sometimes Tommy. He would probably be open to a better way, but someone will have to show him. LINDSEY- Daughter of Mr. Bailey. Strong leadership skills, but she would rather just go along with whatever Ann and Alex say is cool. She has a hard time respecting her dad, because she misunderstands his generosity as being a push over. But she loves her dad, even if she doesn t know how to show it. She does an okay job of sticking up for her little brother Tommy when necessary, but, though she doesn t often actively make fun of Carl, she never defends him. TOMMY- the youngest of the kids and little brother to Lindsey. He s quiet, but not as shy as people think. Often the brunt of Alex s jokes, but is either a complete pushover, or perhaps, doesn t put any stock in Alex s talk, because Alex doesn t seem to be able to get a rise out of him. He is the only kid who treats Carl with kindness. Tommy would be happy to be just like his dad, Mr. Bailey. ANN- Plenty adventurous in spirit, but will go as far as, or remain as boring as whoever is around her. A bundle of potential, she just needs someone to steer her in the right direction to shine. Mostly she takes to the normal activities; meeting her friends for ice cream, making fun of Carl, and wishing there was something else to do. ADULTS: OFFICER BURT- Easy going, not interested in things getting to exciting or dramatic, he s the only police officer in town. He s very friendly, but in this town, he s never had to be real firm with anyone, so whatever happens will be a new test for him. MR. BAILEY- Glenn Bailey is the grocer, and the most genuine guy in town. No one even questions his altruism anymore, it s just fact that he treats others as more significant than himself, even if it costs him. Incredibly generous, with an underrated wit, people give him a hard time mostly because his example is hard to keep up with. Father to Lindsey and Tommy, he is a devoted Christian, and strives to love, serve, and teach others to walk in the Light. SIMON- A real go getter, strangely ambitious for someone around here. Owner of The Inside Scoop, the local ice cream and burger joint. Always a step ahead of everyone else in town, he seems to know how to make a profit on every friendship. The only peculiarity that people talk about, is his intense curiosity with the old Shady Hollow Mine. CARL- Adult? Not sure. A rather awkward young guy, he s graduated from High School but still in town, which is a demographic that he solely occupies here. He works for Simon at the Inside Scoop, and no one sees him unless he s there. He s not very popular, and unfortunately, the younger kids remind him of it often.

Carl is standing outside the ice cream shop with a sign that says tourists get 10% off waffle cones, today only! The kids enter, dodging tourists as they all head to the ice cream shop. Alex stops them to point and make fun of Carl, and Mr. Bailey sees them, Lindsey tries to pretend like she didn t see Mr. Bailey. ALEX- (pointing at Carl) Nice sign bro (the kids laugh at Carl except for Tommy). Funny how it says today only, it said the same thing yesterday. ANN- And the day before! They enter the ice cream shop laughing. Tommy doesn t laugh though, and he stops on the way in and speaks to Carl. TOMMY- Hey Carl. CARL- Hey Tommy. TOMMY- Sorry about Alex. You doing okay? CARL- I guess. TOMMY- Well, I guess I ll see you around (follows the other kids into the ice cream shop). Officer enters scene and approaches Mr. Bailey. OFFICER BURT- Mornin Glenn, sorry I m late. MR. BAILEY- Oh that s alright Burt. Good morning. BURT- Well, I guess we oughtta take a look inside. BAILEY- (Sarcastically) Well, as you can see the door is open. They laugh about it and head inside the store. BURT- (While entering) So you say they didn t really take anything. The kids come out of the shop with their ice cream, Tommy has a brownie instead. On their way out, Alex says to Carl loser, in a cough under his breath, and Ann snickers a bit, also under her breath. TOMMY- (stopping for a moment to acknowledge Carl) See you later, Carl.

LINDSEY- He just doesn t like it Alex. Or maybe he doesn t want to live with permanent brain freeze like you. ALEX- Ha ha ha. Hey that was crazy about your dad s store Lindsey. Did anyone get killed? LINDSEY- Um, no. Nobody was even there, how would they get killed? ALEX- I figured the robber broke in with guns blasting, like usual. ANN- Like usual? I don t think we ve ever had a robbery in our town. ALEX- Exactly, everywhere else it happens all the time and the place usually gets shot up. LINDSEY- You watch too many movies. ANN- So, what did happen, Linds? I heard nothing was even stolen. ALEX- Nothing stolen? What a terrible robbery. LINDSEY- It was pretty weird, they busted the door and went straight to my dad s office. They threw everything around in there, really tore it up. But, Dad said as far as he could tell, nothing was taken. ANN- Weird. ALEX- Super weird. Maybe they planted a bomb; could be terrorists. ANN- Alex, don t be ridiculous. Why would anyone bomb Mr. Bailey s grocery store? He s like the nicest guy in town. ALEX- Come on Ann, it s not that ridiculous, I mean, why would anyone break in and not take anything? They could have had a year s supply of Cocoa Pebbles, but they just left them on the shelf. Sad. Carl has gradually let the sign droop and is leaning against the wall looking very tired. LINDSEY- I don t think insurance is gonna cover the damage and my dad doesn t have the money to pay for it. Can we just talk about something else?

What we should do, is go dust for finger prints. LINDSEY- Do you know how to do that kind of thing? ANN- Not really, but I see it all the time on CSI so I ve got the general idea. ALEX- Are you kidding? We would be in there when the bomb goes off! Simon comes out of the shop and catches Carl off guard. SIMON- (slightly angry) Carl! I don t pay you to sleep! Hold that sign up where folks can see it! (noticing the kids and changing his attitude completely) Well, hello there kids! Enjoying your ice cream? Ooh, Chocolate Peanut Butter, good choice Alex. Lindsey, I heard about your father s store, mm mm mm, what a shame. Mr. Bailey and Officer Burt come out of the store. SIMON- (walking immediately towards them) Ah! Burt, and Mr. Bailey. Just the folks I wanted to see! Now is it true, Glenn? Someone trashed the place? BAILEY- You could say so, a bit of a mess to be sure. SIMON- Terrible, just terrible. What all did they take? BURT- Looks like nothing is missing. SIMON- Is that true Glenn? All that fuss and nothing gone? Strange. BAILEY- Yes, it is. SIMON- I wonder what on earth they would have been after, any ideas? BAILEY- Oh, I have an idea. SIMON- Really, what would that be? BURT- Big sale at the Inside Scoop again, eh Simon? Better not be gone too long. Carl doesn t look like he s up to running the place without you just yet. (Carl is nodding off asleep while standing holding the sign). SIMON- (a little annoyed but trying not to show it) Of course, of course. Cheerio, gentlemen. They wave cordially, and Simon goes back toward the shop.

Go home and get some rest, your no good as a zombie! You and your video games. Probably stayed up all night playing that silly WayMaker or Mutiny in the Kingdom no doubt. Well, go on. Simon leans over and whispers to Carl before he leaves, then Simon goes inside, Carl exits. BURT- That fella has a talent for sticking his nose in other people s business. BAILEY- Oh Burt, in a town this small, everybody s nosy sometimes. BURT- Sometimes? Simon surpasses sometimes. You never run out of kindness, do you Glenn? BAILEY- Well, Jesus never runs out of kindness for me. Listen, Burt, it is pretty important that we find out who broke in, they did take one thing, an old journal, doesn t sound like much, but, well let s just say it means a lot to me. Kinda hard to explain so I d rather keep it between you and me. That alright? BURT- (doing an impression of Simon) Of course, of course. Cheerio, gentlemen. Tommy sees his dad (Mr. Bailey) and runs over to him, the other kids follow. TOMMY- Dad! BAILEY- Hey Tommy! What are you kids up to? LINDSEY- Nothing. ANN- Hey Mr. Bailey! ALEX- Hi Mr. Bailey. BAILEY- Hey guys. (to Lindsey and Tommy) Hey, any chance I could talk you two into giving me a hand cleaning up the store? LINDSEY- Ugh, dad. TOMMY- I can help. LINDSEY- (turning to leave) Come on guys (all but Tommy start to leave). BAILEY- Lindsey? (She turns around) I m not forcing you to help me, but I am asking for your help.

She turns and walks away, Alex and Ann follow, feeling a little awkward at the tension and giving each other looks. Just as they are walking away, Burt runs back in, blowing past the three kids and straight to Mr. Bailey. The kids stick around long enough to see what s going on. BURT- Glenn! Glenn! BAILEY- Burt? (Burt gets to Mr. Bailey, out of breath) Whoa there Burt, catch your breath. What s the matter? BURT- Glenn, someone has broken into the mine! BAILEY- What? BURT- Someone has pulled down the danger signs and radiation warnings, busted the lock and gone inside the mine! The door is open! The kids, overhearing, adlib Whoa! and No way! BAILEY- Well, we better get down there right away. BURT- But Glenn, we can t go in there after them, the radiation could kill us! We re not prepared for this sort of thing! Tommy stays close to his dad, while the other three kids stay huddled together. Simon turns the open sign off in the ice cream shop window, and calmly looks around before exiting. LINDSEY- This is crazy. ALEX- This is awesome! ANN- We should go down there and take a look! ALEX- Are you insane? Our faces will melt off! ANN- That s not how it works. As long as we watch from outside the mine, we should be fine. LINDSEY- Should be fine? ALEX- I ll go if Lindsey goes.

Tourists and townsfolk adlib what in the world was that? etc. and begin to panic a little. BAILEY- Burt, what was that? BURT- It sounded like it came from the mine! What should we do? We may have to call the military! BAILEY- Well first thing, we better get this crowd under control. BURT- (addressing the crowd) Alright listen up everyone, calm down, quiet now. listen. We need everyone to just stay calm and go back to your homes, or wherever you are staying. (folks begin to exit) That s right, just carefully head home, please. Mr. Bailey and Burt continue to help people remain calm with adlibs like don t worry, everything s going to be fine and just calmly make your way back to your homes and stay inside. Tommy realizes the other kids have run off toward the mine, and tries to get his dad s attention. TOMMY- Dad? Dad! (finally has to tug on his dad s shirt sleeve) Dad! BAILEY- What is it Tommy? TOMMY- Lindsey and Alex and Ann just ran off! BURT- Good! You should get on home too, Tommy. I ll make sure your dad is right behind you once we ve got things under control here. TOMMY- No! They ran off toward the mine! Burt and Mr. Bailey give each other a look. BURT- We can t go down there, Glenn. BAILEY- It s my daughter, Burt. You know I have to. Just walk in His light, and He will show you the way. Remember our verse? Tommy nods in agreement, and they start off toward the mine. BURT- Glenn! (Tommy and Mr. Bailey turn around) Be careful!
