THE GOLDMUND MIMESIS 36 CD TURNTABLE

THE GOLDMUND MIMESIS 36 CD TURNTABLE USER MANUAL

WARNING! This high quality CD player possess new technical features which are necessary for an accurate tracking of the today's best CDs. Only a careful use can provide all satisfactions you are expecting. All handling must be performed according to the following instructions to avoid to deteriorate the player. Nevertheless, if the instructions are perfectly carried out, you will notice that the use of the GOLDMUND MIMESIS 36 CD transport is quite simple and convenient. IMPORTANT : PLEASE DO NOT CONNECT ANY WIRE OR MOVE ANY PART BEFORE READING THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS. 3

1. PRELIMINARIES Please read very carefully the following instructions. This high-precision CD player will provide the best tracking conditions for today's high-quality CDs. For exacting technicians, musicians, and all those who demand the very best in recording transcription, we strongly recommend the use of our separate D/A converter, the GOLDMUND MIMESIS 10. 2. UNPACKING You will find in the packing : - the CD transport itself, - the power cord. - this user manual. - the warranty card, to be sent back to Goldmund immediately to benefit of the Goldmund 3 years warranty. Unpack carefully the above-mentioned parts. Keep the whole packing for future use. WARNING: If you need to return the CD transport to the factory or to your local representative for a warranty repair, please note that it must be repacked in the original packing. Otherwise new packing will be charged as well as the repair of damages occurred due to poor packing conditions. 4

3. POWER SUPPLY VOLTAGE SELECTION The power supply of your unit has been adjusted to operate with the mains AC voltage of your area. Check on the back panel of the unit in any doubt. If you move after purchasing the CD transport to an area using different mains voltage, do not forget to switch the back panel selector to the new voltage of your area. The unit can operate indifferently with 50 or 60 Hz mains. 4. CHOICE OF THE CD TRANSPORT LOCATION If you are not using the Goldmund CD table, especially developed for the Mimesis 36, you will have to select a very rigid support for your CD transport. Due to the specific quality of its Goldmund "Mechanical Grounding" construction, the Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport is less critical than other designs in placement selection. Feedback is mostly so low that no special precaution is required. Nevertheless, position the player as far as you can of the speakers if you want to totally avoid the air coupling between the speakers and the CD player. Select a position of the support where the transport is set to have the most rigid possible connection to the floor. Solid coupling is essential, and if your support is standing on a suspended floor, optimal result requires that you arrange the support to have at least one foot over a supporting beam or close enough from a supporting wall. Due to its Goldmund "Mechanical Grounding" construction, the Mimesis 36 CD transport is less sensitive than other CD transport to vibration evacuation. The use of built-in evacuation cones allows the optimum coupling with the support. 5

5. INSTALLATION Remove the 3 silver large-head screws visible on the bottom of the CD transport and locking the suspension of the mechanism as well as the transformer bloc. These screws are used only for transporting the unit. WARNING : Each time you will have to move your Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport, you will have to lock these screws back in position. So keep them carefully in a safe place. Put the CD transport on its support. Do not try to adjust the feet yet, you will need the help of the built-in electro-optical level measuring device to do it properly, so the transport must be powered up first. 6. POWER CONNECTION Plug the AC power cord to the back of the Mimesis 36 and in a wall socket. Switch the back power switch ON. A small led should glow on the front display, meaning the unit is now powered on but remains in standby. To switch ON the unit from standby, press simultaneously the 3 keys marked : "DISPLAY", "MEMO" and "EJECT" on the top panel control keyboard. 2 dots appear on the display and the lighting of the keyboard goes on. This key combination has been chosen so the CD transport cannot be set ON by accident, during cleaning, or if you have small children playing with it inadvertently. The CD transport power can also be set to ON by a remote-control transmitter. NOTES : - If the unit is powered ON without disc, the cover lifts up. - If the cover remains open for more than few minutes, it will turn down automatically to protect the unit against dust contamination. The unit returns to standby by pressing simultaneously the keys : "DISPLAY", "MEMO" and "EJECT". In normal use, you will not have to manipulate the back panel switch anymore. 6

7. FEET AND SUSPENSION ADJUSTMENT The Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport use a new foot combination : * The back-right and front-left feet are normally attached to the chassis of the unit. They can be rotated to level the chassis in combination with the other two feet. * The back-left foot is coupled to the suspended transformer bloc in order to separately evacuate the vibrations emitted by the transformers and to avoid them to be transmitted to the transport. * The front-right foot is directly coupled to the suspended bloc supporting the CD motor. Rotating this foot lifts up or down the suspended bloc but not the chassis. The feet adjustment must be achieved in two successive steps : 1 - The leveling of the whole unit in order to make it horizontal. 2 - The leveling of the internal suspended bloc to optimize the reading process. 1 - Use a bubble level to set the chassis horizontally. The unit is delivered with all feet turned in (lowest level of the transport).. Without touching the (back-left) transformer foot, adjust both the front-left and back-right feet to set the unit horizontal. This adjustment is not critical.. Now, turn down the transformer foot until it applies strongly on the support, internally lifting the transformer bloc suspension.. When doing it, observe the transformer foot. Turn it down slowly until it touches the support. Then turn it half-a-turn more in order to put pressure on the transformer suspension. Your unit is now correctly leveled. 2 - With the unit powered on, observe the "level" indicator on the top keyboard. This indicator uses two arrow leds. Most probably one led is now glowing.. Turn the front-right foot in the direction indicated by the arrow-led. Do it until the led comes off.. If you go too far in the same direction, the other led will glow, indicating that you should turn the foot in the other direction.. When both leds are off, your unit suspension is perfectly leveled and the CD Transport is ready to use. 7

8. BACK PANEL OUTPUT CONNECTION If no special option has been installed, the Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport is equipped in standard with the following output standard connectors : - 75 Ohms RCA coaxial SPDIF connector. - AES-EBU symmetrical 110 Ohms XLR connector. You may use more than one of these connectors at the same time to connect your CD transport to more than one D/A converter or digital preamplifier, since they are separated electronically. Goldmund recommends that the greatest care is taken when selecting the cable linking the Mimesis 36 to the D/A converter or digital preamplifier. The extremely accurate signal provided by the Mimesis 36 can easily be ruined by an imperfect connection. Use a "Goldmund lineal" cable if you want to reach the most accurate jitterfree connection. 9. KEYBOARD FUNCTIONS - EJECT : This key lifts the CD transport acrylic cover up or down. The lifting mechanism is built to raise the Goldmund CD clamp with the cover, and to gently put it down on the CD when the cover comes down. When the cover is closed with a CD on the platter, the CD starts turning for a few seconds then stops. At this time, the front panel display and top keyboard display indicate the number of tracks on your CD. If the cover remains open too long, the unit will automatically shut it down to protect the internal mechanism from dust contamination. - PLAY : This key is used to start a record by the first track. It also cancels the "Pause" function. - STOP : Stops the player. It also cancels all information in the programming memory. 8

- PREV : Key used to go directly to the beginning of the previous track of the record. - F.REW : Key used for fast reverse search. This function allows to cue at 5 times the speed when the key is kept pressed. - PAUSE : Key used for the pause function. When the "Pause" function is switched off by pressing the "Start" key, the selection will start back at the exact location where it was interrupted. - F.FWD : Key used for fast forward search. This function allows to cue at five times the speed as for the fast rewind function. - NEXT : Key used to go directly to the next track. - TIME : Key used to modify the status of the LED display. The display indicates either the time or the track index. - PROG : Key used to program the selection of the tracks. Please refer to the Programming section of this manual. - MEMO : Memorize the selected track. - REPEAT : This key is used to repeat the whole record or the whole program after it is finished. This does not allow to repeat only a specific track. Most of the functions accessible from the keyboard can also be achieved using a Philips standard remote-control transmitter. 9

10. PROGRAMMING The use of the "Prog" key together with the "Prev" and "Next" keys allows the user to change the playing order of the various cuts of a record. The Mimesis 36 allows the user to memorize up to 10 different cuts. To select your program : - Put a record on the spindle and place the clamp. - Wait for the number of cuts to appear on the display. - Press "Prog". - Press the "Next" key until you reach the first cut of your selection. - Press the "Memo" key. - Press the "Next" or "Prev" key until you reach the second selection of your program. - Press "Memo" again. - Repeat the operation until your program is totally built (max 10 cuts). When listening to a programmed cut, the "Next" and "Prev" keys act on the programmed cuts and not on the original sequence of the record. WARNING : The "Stop" key cancels all the information present in the program memory. 11. COVER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL The motor-controlled cover of the Mimesis 36 may be adjusted in speed to satisfy the user preferences. For the convenience, the different possible speeds are numbered from the minimum (3 to 10, selected by the factory), to the maximum (15). To activate the speed adjustment program, press the 3 keys : Stop, Play and Eject simultaneously before turning ON the back power switch of the unit and leave them pressed until the keyboard lights up. The keyboard numeric display shows P0. To progress in this adjustment program, you will have to press the Next and Prev keys to make the program advance one step or move one step backwards. By pressing once Next, you come to step 1, and the keyboard numeric display shows P1. This step is used to adjust the cover speed. Press >> and << to adjust the speed to a different value. When the correct speed is found, press the Memo key to memorize it. Automatically the program switches to the next step and the numeric display shows P2. To leave the program, press Next once. The program reaches the step 3, the display shows P3, which automatically exits from the speed adjustment routine. 10

12. CLEANING Always disconnect the power cord from the wall socket before cleaning your CD transport. To clean the metacrylate parts of the transport, you can use any specific cleaner for acrylic materials. Always use a very soft cloth to avoid to scratch the surface. The metacrylate can be cleaned very easily using the Goldmund Cleaner, available from your nearest Goldmund dealer. You can also use a soft cloth slightly wet if you have no specific cleaner available. ATTENTION : Do not try to clean the metacrylate top of the unit when it is connected. A memory erasure can be caused by static discharge during cleaning. Use a wet cleaning rather than dry to avoid static and always disconnect the unit during cleaning. 13. MAINTENANCE The Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport does not require any specific maintenance. However it is possible that, after some time of use, the suspension adjustment becomes slightly too low, due to springs settling. You will detect that the suspension needs readjustment by the level indicator situated on the top keyboard of the unit. Then readjust the suspension (front-right) foot as indicated above. 11
