https://www.uiltexas.org/speech/oral-interp

Why interpretation? Purpose? Share a message/passion for a topic. You get to help people consider something you care about.in a pretty non-threatening way. Keep your audience (judges included) in mind as you share important topics for your generation! Share literature You get the opportunity to be the mouthpiece for an author. Your job is to read the pieces in such a way that you INTERPRET the pieces and the message to the audience.

The Basics Time Limit Not to exceed 7 minutes This 7 minutes includes introductions and transitional material There is no grace period. Manuscripts or Copies Must perform materials copied in a binder Black Book Depot Meet Category Requirements 2 Categories Documentation is required to prove categories are met. Prose & Poetry Introduction Information from Website

Category A: Examining our Changing World The goal of the category is for the performer to examine his/her changing world and to INFORM the audience about a societal change and its impact on the performer. Societal Change= a significant alteration over time in behavior, cultural values, and norms. Increase the audience s knowledge about a contemporary societal change occurring in the performer s world such as, but not limited to: education, family, personal relationships, career choices, minority struggles, or community issues.

Category B: Taking a Stand! The goal of this category is to develop a literary program that supports a position using different types of literature to make a PERSUASIVE argument. Although this category offers many options to performers, the intent is not to encourage originally authored material but to give the contestant the freedom of expanding published material to include different types of literary works.

Category A: Examine our Changing World (informative) Material must be PUBLISHED, PRINTED material! If found on internet, it must be concurrently published in hard copy. Must perform a single literary work or excerpt from a single work written by one author. Works co-authored or written by anonymous authors are not permissible. NO plays, screenplays, movie or documentary scripts allowed! NO speeches allowed! PROSE Category B: Taking a Stand (persuasive argument) Material MAY BE published, printed material, online material, or transcribed material.
