Always include this instruction manual when passing the product on to third parties. Before operation Only connect the product to microphone inputs or power supply units which provide 48 V phantom powering as per IEC 61938 (48 ± 4 V, at least 3.5 ma per channel). Never open the housing of the product. If products are opened by customers in breach of this instruction, the warranty becomes null and void. During operation Liquids entering the product can short-circuit the electronics or damage the mechanics. Keep all liquids away from the product. Solvents or cleansing agents can damage the surface of the product. Only use a soft, slightly damp cloth to clean the product. Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures. After operation Handle the product with care and store it in a clean, dust-free environment. Intended use Intended use includes: having read this instruction manual, especially the chapter Important safety information, using the product within the operating conditions and limitations described in this instruction manual. Improper use means using the product other than as described in this instruction manual, or under operating conditions which differ from those described herein. 1

Bedienungsanleitung Manual de utilização Instruction manual Gebruiksaanwijzing Notice d emploi Инструкция по эксплуатации Istruzioni per l uso Instrucciones de uso The MK 8 microphone The MK 8 is a large diaphragm true condenser studio microphone for very detailed, professional studio recordings. The switchable pick-up pattern provides excellent flexibility. The microphone offers outstanding sound quality, easy handling and an excellent value-for-money ratio. Features Professional large diaphragm capsule (1") in true condenser design, internally shock-mounted for low handling noise 24-carat gold-plated diaphragm Rugged metal housing Low inherent self-noise and high maximum sound pressure level Five switchable pick-up patterns due to dual diaphragm transducer 3-position switchable low-cut/roll-off filter 3-position pad switch Made in Germany Areas of application Speech/vocals Acoustic guitars Guitar amplifiers Grand piano Strings Wind instruments Drums and percussion Package contents MK 8 microphone MZQ 4 microphone clamp Pouch MK 8 Instruction manual 2

Product overview A * 1 Sound inlet basket 2 XLR-3 socket 3 Low-cut/roll-off switch 4 Directivity switch 5 Pad switch 20 db 10 db 0 db Putting the MK 8 into operation Information on mounting, connecting and orienting the MK 8 can be found on the cover page. To suppress structure-borne noise, you can use the MKS 4 shock mount (see diagram C on the cover page). Using the MK 8 Caution Danger of damage to the device! The switches on the MK 8 can be damaged if you try to operate them using tools. Only operate the switches on the MK 8 using your fingers. Adjusting the pick-up pattern Set the directivity switch 2 to the desired position: Pos. Pick-up pattern Omni-directional Wide cardioid Cardioid Super-cardioid Figure-of-eight Information on the sound inlet areas of the different pickup patterns can be found in diagram F on the cover page. * Diagrams can be found on the cover pages. 3

Adjusting the attenuation Set the pad switch 5 to the desired position: Pos. Attenuation 0 db No attenuation -10 db Reduces the sensitivity of the microphone capsule, increases the maximum sound pressure level. -20 db Reduces the sensitivity of the microphone capsule, increases the maximum sound pressure level. Additionally reduces the output gain, avoids overloading the microphone amplifiers. Adjusting the low-cut/roll-off filter Set the low-cut/roll-off switch 3 to the desired position: Pos. Low-cut/roll-off filter Off, linear frequency response Roll-off, 6 db/oct., cut-off frequency: 100 Hz, compensates for the bass boost due to proximity effect Low-cut, 18 db/oct, cut-off frequency: 60 Hz, eliminates low-frequency noise such as impact sound Instructions for use Make sure that there is no disturbing noise source (e.g. PC fan, loudspeaker) in the sound inlet area of the microphone. If sibilance occurs: Position the MK 8 slightly to the side and not directly in front of the mouth or sound source. To suppress pop noise: Use a pop shield, e.g. the Sennheiser MZP 40 (see diagram E on the cover page). To reduce wind noise: X X Use a windshield, e.g. the Sennheiser MKW 4 (see diagram E on the cover page). The windshield changes the sound only slightly, but attenuates wind noise by approx. 10 db. 4

Cleaning and maintaining the MK 8 Caution Damage to the product due to liquids! Liquids entering the product can short-circuit the electronics or damage the mechanics. Solvents or cleansing agents can damage the surface of the product. Keep all liquids away from the product. Do not use any solvents or cleansing agents. Only use a soft, slightly damp cloth to clean the product. When not using the microphone for extended periods of time: Store the microphone in a dry, clean and dust-free place at room temperature. For this, use the supplied pouch or a lint-free, air-permeable packing material. 5

If a problem occurs... Problem Possible cause Possible solution No function Phantom power is not switched on Switch the phantom power on. Phantom power device is not connected to the mains or no battery is inserted No signal transmission Microphone is connected to the wrong input or input is not activated Sound distorted Max. SPL is clipped due to a very loud sound source Subsequent device is overloaded in spite of minimum sensitivity Check the mains connection or the battery of the phantom power device. Check the signal path. Activate the input. Set the pad switch on the microphone to 10 db. Wind influence Use a suitable windshield. Plosives Use a suitable pop shield. Set the pad switch on the microphone to 10 or 20 db. Structure-borne noise transmission Use a suitable shock mount. Sound muffled, spatial Pick-up pattern has been ignored Check if the microphone is spoken into from the correct side. Make sure that the Sennheiser logo or the slanted front of the sound inlet basket faces your body. 6
