It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain all permissions. Biographical/Historical note Peter McLaren (b. August 2, 1948) is a Professor in the Division of Urban Schooling, the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author and editor of forty-five books and hundreds of scholarly articles and chapters. His writings have been translated into 20 languages. He is known as one of the leading architects of critical pedagogy and for his scholarly writings on critical literacy, the sociology of education, cultural studies, critical ethnography, and Marxist theory. He has developed a reputation for his uncompromising political analysis influenced by a Marxist humanist philosophy and a unique literary style of expression. Custodial History note This collection was orginally a part of The Freire Project: the Paulo and Nita Freire Project for International Critical Pedagogy(http://www.freireproject.org/) created by Shirley Steinberg and Joe Kincheloe. The archival holdings were donated to Chapman University in 2011 and added to The Paulo Freire Critical Pedagogy Archive. Immediate Source of Acquisition note Gift of Shirley Steinberg. Highlights are a bound copy of his dissertation, "Education as Ritual", his curriculum vitae and student evaluations. Some of the highlights are two notes from Paulo Freire and letters of recommendation from a large number of McLaren's colleagues supporting his nomination for the Renowned Scholar award at Miami University in 1989. Correspondence, Business, Publishers Bulk, 1994-1997 1984-2005 This series contains correspondence between various publishers and McLaren from 1985 until 2005 with the bulk from the period 1994-1997. Correspondence, Business, Conferences Bulk, 1984-1997 1979-2005 This series consists of correspondence relating to the appearance of McLaren at various conferences or lectures given by him with the majority of the material from 1984 to 1997. Correspondence, EAP Renowned Scholar Award 1989 This series contains copies of letters sent to Dr. Richard Quantz in support of his nomination of McLaren for Renowned Scholar at Miami University in 1989. An item of interest is a copy of the original proposal by Quantz to the EAP Committee April 25, 1989. 4
