CLASSICS SERIES Opening Night Tito Muñoz Conducts Carmina Burana Celebrate a new chapter in the history of The Phoenix Symphony as Maestro Tito Muñoz makes his debut as The Phoenix Symphony s eleventh Virginia G. Piper Music Director. Join Maestro Muñoz in this powerful program as he leads The Phoenix Symphony, The Phoenix Symphony Chorus and Phoenix Boys Choir in Carl Orff s majestic and scenic cantata, Carmina burana, featuring the famous O Fortuna movement heard in numerous movie and television commercial scores. This magical program also features Igor Stravinsky s adventurous Firebird Suite, a masterwork of personal significance to Maestro Muñoz. Don t miss this historic evening and join Phoenix in welcoming Maestro Tito Muñoz. I am eager to bring one of my personal favorite pieces of music to Phoenix, the Suite from The Firebird, which is one of the first pieces of orchestral repertoire I learned in my youth, alongside the majestic and celebrated Carmina burana. Tito Muñoz, Virginia G. Piper Music Director Maestro Tito Muñoz continues his triumphant and dynamic inaugural season with Aaron Copland s quintessential masterpiece, Appalachian Spring. Reminiscent of an idealized America, Copland s harmonic and luxurious Pulitzer Prize-winning ballet suite has become one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the 20th century. In this program Maestro Muñoz also debuts classical saxophonist Amy Dickson; the #1 UK Classical artist who has won Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Hear her unique sound in John Williams lively and energetic Escapades from Catch Me If You Can, as well as in Jennifer Higdon s Soprano Sax Concerto which has been called a significant testament to beauty. This gripping and emotional symphony brings an unparalleled emotional honesty to orchestral music. The program also features The Phoenix Symphony s world renowned and Valley favorite Concertmaster Steven Moeckel performing Mozart s enchanting and lively Turkish Violin Concerto. The evening begins with the overture to Rossini s popular comedy, L Italiana in Algeri The Italian Girl in Algiers. Concertmaster Steven Moeckel s performance of Shostakovich s Violin Concerto last November was pure magic. I look forward to working with Steven once again for Mozart s Turkish Violin Concerto No. 5. Also returning to Phoenix with Maestro Christie is internationally recognized pianist William Wolfram, performing Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1. This concert features Jean Sibelius triumphant and enveloping Symphony No. 5. The evening also includes The Phoenix Symphony s own Principal Flutist Viviana Cumplido Wilson, with Nielsen s intimate and melodic flute concerto. The program begins with selections from Edvard Grieg s expansive Peer Gynt including the ever popular theme In the Hall of the Mountain King. Known for his fresh perspective, Canadian born pianist Louie Lortie returns to Phoenix to perform Chopin s first piano concerto. The evening begins with Webern s opulent and poetic Im Sommerwind and concludes with Mendelssohn s joyful representation of Italy through his most popular Symphony No. 4, the Italian Symphony. Tito Muñoz, continuing his triumphant debut with The Phoenix Symphony, leads a program that also features the return of Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs performing Guilmant s Symphony No. 1 for Organ and Orchestra. The evening begins with the overture to Beethoven s loving opera, Fidelio. I am looking forward to working with Paul on this concert. The evening begins with Vaughan Williams Magnificat, a lyrical expression of joy and thanksgiving. The evening continues with Brahms Schicksalslied or Song of Destiny, which explores the competing existence of deities and mortals. The evening concludes with both choirs singing Kodály s rarely performed Psalmus hungaricus, a bombastic and defiant work based on scriptures Psalm 55 to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of Buda and Pest in Hungary. Praised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as impossible to resist, captivating with lyricism, tonal warmth, and boundless enthusiasm, violinist Giora Schmidt makes his Phoenix Symphony debut with Bruch s enduring first violin concerto. The program opens with Finding Rothko, an enchanting piece reflecting on four of the abstract works by Russian artist Mark Rothko by the young American composer, Adam Schoenberg. A program featuring two of my passions.
