Directory of Sherbrooke area artists, performers and craftspeople Directory of individuals who perform in public or who create and present work for the public that is original, unique or in limited edition. Sherbrooke Formulaire disponible en français sur demande de la Ville de Sherbrooke, Service de la culture et de la bibliothèque, au (819) 821-5438.

A step forward for culture On March 17, 2003, the city's cultural policy was adopted. We are now pleased to invite all Sherbrooke area artists, performers and craftspeople, professional and amateur, to submit their names in the creation of a directory. With this tool, the city is setting the stage to become more familiar with the depth and diversity of Sherbrooke's artistic community while providing an additional means to networking and promotion for local artists, performers and craftspeople. Ideally, the names of all citizens who currently practise an art or craft, or who perform works of art should be included in the directory. By making this initiative known to those concerned in your circle of acquaintances, you will help us reach our objective as fully as possible. We ask that you return this form, duly completed; in this way, you will participate in advancing the city's cultural mission, which is to offer all interested citizens the opportunity to benefit from access to culture. Designed for ease of consultation and regular updating, the directory will give an additional boost to a cultural vitality that is already in full swing, thanks mainly to the numerous and enthusiastic members of the artistic and cultural community who lend it life and energy on a daily basis. Are you one of these creators? If the answer is yes, this form is for you. Thank you for stepping forward. Mayor of Sherbrooke President of the committee on culture Jean Perrault Chantal L Espérance

D irectory of Sherbrooke area artists, performers and craftspeople Definitions As a follow-up to the orientations presented in its cultural policy (2003), the Ville de Sherbrooke intends to create an electronic directory to be updated annually - of the artists, performers and craftspeople who live or work in Sherbrooke. There is a double purpose to this directory: on one hand, for the city, it offers the opportunity to identify and become more familiar with the community of cultural players that is active in Sherbrooke; on the other, it presents the artists, performers and craftspeople with a networking and promotional tool and a way of lending greater visibility to their work. The community value of such a listing is to reveal the wealth and variety that exists in Sherbrooke of both the cultural works and those who perform them. The composition of this directory is the fruit of some deliberate choices: first, we favour individuals instead of higher-profile institutions; second, we give equal consideration to artists, performers and craftspeople; third, we offer access not only to recognised professionals but also to those who create or perform as a hobby (for example, Canadian singer Joni Mitchell would be as welcome for her drawings as for her music ). In this same spirit, and to reflect these choices, the preparation of this directory rests on a number of criteria and definitions to guide those who wish to take part. For the sake of brevity, references to individuals are expressed in the masculine gender.

A dmissibility Any artist, performer or craftsperson, professional or amateur, 18 years of age or older, who resides or works in Sherbrooke and whose work is current, is invited to be included in the directory. Artists, performers or craftspeople are defined as: persons who perform in public or who create and present works to the public that are original, unique or in limited edition. The range of occupations and subjects covered by the term art are the following: literature, visual arts, theatre arts, crafts, architecture and design, multidisciplinary arts, circus and street performing arts, media arts and digital arts. Category: professional Belonging to this category is any artist, performer or craftsperson whose creative or performance activities are recognised as professional according to at least two of the following criteria: a) has a recognised diploma attesting to specialised training (school, university) b) is recognised as such by his peers (prizes, mentions, professional bursaries, service as a jury member) c) has performed or displayed in a professional context, i.e. in places, with organisations or at events that are officially recognised, such as: publishing houses, art galleries, museums and exhibition centres, performance or concert halls, theatres, cultural centres, production companies, shows, festivals, etc. d) has received monetary compensation for creative or performance activity (remuneration for a service, cost of a work or service) e) belongs to a recognised professional association. Category: Hobby Belonging to this category is any artist, performer or craftsperson whose creative or performance activities are a hobby, independent of the previously described professional criteria. Residence Considered to be a resident of Sherbrooke is anyone whose principal residence or principal place of work is currently located in the territory of Sherbrooke, and has been for at least one year.
