3 Learning ank: Franz oseh Haydn (73 809) Haydn was born in Austria to a middle-class amily His musical talents were recognized as a child, and at the age o six, he let home to be trained as a musician As a young man, Haydn worked as a director, teacher, and singer, but his big break came in 76 when he was hired by a wealthy and owerul Hungarian amily, the Esterházys, as a music director and comoser Living on their vast estate or a eriod o thirty years, Haydn was resonsible or writing music or daily use and social ceremony He was well-loved by the orchestra, and his musicians aectionately called him Paa Haydn Symhony No 3, which was comosed in 763, dates rom this eriod o his career It was originally scored or one lute, two oboes, our horns, timani, and strings Haydn s successul career with the Esterházys did not sto him rom additional erormances and ublications throughout Euroe In the 790s, he embarked on a highly successul concert tour o England It was during this tri that he wrote many o his most amous comositions The tour also brought him great wealth that allowed him to live out the rest o his lie in Vienna, the musical caital o Austria Much o Haydn s music is known or its light-hearted, ubeat sirit He had a great sense o humor, and some o his most amous ieces eature musical okes For examle, the Surrise Symhony uses a sudden dynamic contrast to shock the audience; the Farewell Symhony ends with every member o the orchestra walking o stage one by one; and The oke string quartet eatures a series o alse endings, each designed to make the audience think the iece is over Haydn wrote an amazing amount o music during his lie, including 06 symhonies, over 60 string quartets, and over 40 iano trios, as well as many oeras, oratorios, and concertos His mastery made him a legend in his day; in act, he was a riend to Mozart and a teacher to eethoven Haydn s inluence on the history o music was so roound that today he is known as the Father o the Symhony and Father o the String Quartet SO38
