The Home for Humor & Laughter Professionals November 2017 Save The Date! This complimentary Humor Connection newsletter is one of the many ways that AATH fulfills our mission to study, practice and promote healthy humor. You can join our efforts by joining AATH at www.aath.org From the AATH President Nila Nielsen, CHP November LET'S CELEBRATE TOGETHER AATH Annual Humor Conference & Humor Academy April 12 15, 2018 San Diego, California Sponsors: Don't you just love this month! I've always thought of November as a month to celebrate. I smile when the change in weather makes me dig out my bulky sweaters as they help me cover up the extra pounds I gain from eating way too much turkey and pumpkin pie! I celebrate that I have sweaters... but also that I am very fortunate to have food on my table. This month I also celebrate the joy I find as I serve as your President. Won't you take time this month to CELEBRATE with me? Let's celebrate our new members, as we are thankful that they are now part of the AATH family. Let's celebrate the joy of the lasting friendships formed through this Association. Let's celebrate the tremendous opportunities provided by attending the annual AATH Conference as we learn new techniques of applying humor, hear of amazing new research from leaders in the field, and of course, laugh together. Let's celebrate our volunteers who provide countless hours to promote the mission of AATH To serve as the community of professionals who study, practice and promote healthy humor and laughter. Let's celebrate that we can provide humor in the workplace and home as we utilize application strategies to provide therapeutic support. Finally Let's celebrate YOU the one who brings laughter and joy to others in so many ways, each and every day of the year. I invite you to continue this celebration throughout the year put on your warm sweater, eat another piece of pie, and then go online and register for the AATH Conference before early registration ends at the end of this month. Nurse Funshine Cheryl Fell Client Focused Counseling Fr. Paul Moore Jill and Charley Knox Celebrating each of you with heartfelt gratitude! Register before December 1 and save $50 off regular registration fees, a free conference tee shirt and a copy of Keynote Srini Pillay's book: Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try! Winter is fast approaching, and so is the deadline for our special early conference registration offers! Register for AATH's Annual Conference by December 1st and you'll receive a free AATH Conference t shirt and a copy of the latest book by Keynote Speaker Dr. Srini Pillay, Harvard Neuroscientist and Psychiatry Professor, titled Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try: Unleash the Power of the Unfocused Mind. And while you're registering, take some time to check out this year's schedule. We are excited to announce that Srini Pillay will be presenting on Friday, April 13th. Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind Harness your mind's innate tendency to wander, stall, rest, and unfocus and become more productive in the boardroom, living room, or classroom. Drawing on the latest brain research, compelling stories from his psychological practice, and colorful examples of counterintuitive success from sports, business, education, and the arts, neuroscientist Srini Pillay, M.D., challenges traditional ideas about productivity, revealing the lasting, positive benefits of adding deliberate and regular unfocus to your repertoire. We can't wait to see you in San Diego! by Debra Joy Hart, R.N. (Reviewed by Florence Ditlow, RN) Debra Joy is that "Harty" nurse who infects thousands of people with her healing humor and contagious laughter. She never washes her hands of any situation, and finds the right antidote to lift your spirit...yes even extending to the grieving of children. We humor professionals like to spread joy; well one of us is named "Joy." Her eclectic style has uplifted many; witness the recent skeletal antics, where she raised the dead and attached a red nose. Death is a problem... haha, however you may view it much more so if you're a child coping with the loss of a pet. Deb here has used a picture book, perfect for kids who are about kindergarten age, even if they haven't learned reading. Love and laughter work together when Grandma D treats grieving with an hour of bubble blowing, allowing a teaching moment. Deb uses soap bubble art as a metaphor for life. Every bubble holds a breath! Caitlin Yates' rainbow pastel illustrations show bubble breathing business as a simple but quite useful therapy as she depicts child care and humor therapy. This is recommended for children, especially library story hours when kids may end by blowing bubbles together. Note that Grandmas benefit from bubble inspiration! I'm Florence Ditlow RN, your book reviewer. I'm a long time AATH member, a midwife of humor in hospitals, author of two books and student of two dogs who are revealing

Humor Academy Director Report A Big Fat Turkey with Gratitude on the Side A long time ago, 2010 to be exact, a group of pioneers wanted to gather together to experience the pleasure of each other and enrich their table by presenting others with the joy of sharing a big fat turkey. Now most of us know that a turkey is commonly the meal served on a platter, but in this instance, the plate of turkey was the joy of sharing and learning about humor. So, they did just that! These AATH members worked diligently together and finally invited others to come and feast. to me that the secret of nonverbal humor is inner joy. Members who would like their book to be considered for an upcoming Humor Connection book review, should contact info@aath.org. Please use Book Review Submission in the subject line. New Member Spotlight This, my friends, was the first 'Feast of Humor' now known as the Humor Academy. The Humor Academy (HA) is now a benefit open to AATH members who wish to gather, laugh, learn and in short, feast together to do the following: 1. Pursue a deeper understanding of therapeutic humor 2. Work toward a personal goal for further research or for therapeutic humor's effective application 3. Exhibit leadership in the field. Participants in the 3 year program are exposed to many of the best human and multi media resources available, and enjoy the tremendous camaraderie and insights of others in this carefully planned, nontraditional, interdisciplinary group learning experience. Now it's your turn. We welcome you to come join the Feast! For more info contact the HA Director, Beth Slazak at: bethslazak@gmail.com Sindy Hild is a laughter yoga teacher at assisted living facilities. During the day, Sindy teaches medical billing at Synergy Billing in Daytona. In the evenings, Sindy teaches yoga at the local gym. Richard Oberbruner is a new Midwest member. Richard is an actor, and he recently played Sweeney Todd at a festival during Halloween. The Level I groups (West Jesters and Chuckle Chicks) will have a combined group Holiday Party on Nov. 29th at 7:00 p.m. via our ZOOM network. There will be lots of fun activities including a scavenger hunt and a "potluck." All are asked to "bring" a dish to pass. Advisors Angie Robinson and Jennifer Keith are pleased with the journals and reflections of these amazing students who are already volunteering for various roles in HA. Level II groups are meeting with Nila Nielsen and working on finding research articles for their projects. Ann Zuccardy has posted information on how to set up keywords for Google searches. What fun to know that our student, Bunmi from Nigeria is able to participate in the calls? The dynamic Level III group is enjoying the podcasts and meeting sessions offered by advisor Karyn Buxman. Karyn is offering this opportunity for the CHP and HA students this month! Level III special guest on Thursday, November 30 at 4 pm PT/6 pm CT/7 pm ET will be Mark LeBlanc, Past President of NSA, successful business coach, author, pastspeaker at AATH, co founder of Indie Books International, and a dear friend. We'll be addressing the power of humor in influence, and the conversation will include bits about resilience, writing, speaking, sales and marketing, if your heart desires. Volunteer of the Month Deb Price Dolores White continues to conduct laughter yoga classes as a Respite Center and at her local Senior Centre. Dolores ends her laughter classes with a sing along, which has been very well received. Paul Moore is presenting at the Liberation Psychology Intercambio (Knowledge Exchange) Program in El Salvador November 5th to 12th. Check their website for more info. Amy Oestreicher was interviewed by Karyn Buxman to promote this year's conference in San Diego on April 12th to 15th, 2018. Check out the video here. My very good friend Hans Morten Hansen is celebrating 25 years as a professional comedian next year by setting up a special "one night only" show. And the venue is our Hockey Stadium with an audience capacity of 5,000 people! Guess who he has asked to be one of the "warm up" comedians? Member Benefits! Did you know... Regional Chapter Updates Midwest Regional Chapter Monnie Kinlaw, Valedictorian I am a Registered Nurse with a long career that includes occupational and agricultural health, case management and utilization review. My work is for a major hotel chain in Occupational Health/Claims. Twenty years ago, I developed a company, KK Educational Services and recently co founded another, Entertainment CE. Both companies provide professional educational opportunities emphasizing fun and entertainment. I became involved in AATH and the Humor Academy in 2014 to improve the use of humor in my educational experiences. Given the unique exposure opportunities that were provided, I've grown both professionally and personally. Checking off a top item on my Bucket List, a speaking engagement at a large national conference, was due to my HA experience. The Midwest region was thrilled to host an educational session in collaboration with the Rockford, IL YMCA LIVESTRONG program. Ed Dunkelblau served as MC and our very own Brenda Elsagher was our keynote speaker: Humor & Healing from the Patient/Caregiver Perspective. Over 25 people enjoyed Brenda's presentation including several who are interested in becoming members. Peep Our Tweets!
