AUDITIONS FOR ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL CLARINET Thank you for your interest in the Associate Principal Clarinet position with Orchestra Victoria. It is highly important that you read this material in detail. Position Description (from the OV Musician s Enterprise Agreement 2014-2017) iv. Directions to the audition location at the Music Building, Victorian College of the Arts 1. EXCERPTS The list of excerpts will be available to all applicants on the Orchestra Victoria website from 9 December 2017. Copies of audition excerpts may be sent via email upon enquiry on or after 9 December 2016. Queries about hard copy availability and collection should be directed to the Personnel Manager. All applicants will also be sent the excerpts by email after the application closing date. Candidates are required to confirm their attendance at the audition and receipt of excerpts. 2. ACCOMPANIST i. Orchestra Victoria provides an official accompanist, who will be available to all applicants on the day of the audition. Contact details for this accompanist will be available upon enquiry to Sara Pheasant, Personnel Manager, e:orchestrajobs@australianballet.com.au. ii. If you wish to use your own accompanist, he/she must be available for the duration of the audition. If you are planning to use the official accompanist provided, direct contact should be made with the accompanist to arrange a rehearsal time. 3. RECORDED APPLICATIONS i. Applicants may submit a recorded audition; recordings must be audio and video. If you are intending to send recorded auditions, please send through your file electronically using wetransfer.com, dropbox, evernote or yousendit and provide a hard copy on DVD via express post. The file should be sent in one of the following formats: mp4/wav/iso. Recordings must be done in one take and the microphone and camera must remain in the initial position throughout the recording. Please note: DVDs must be accompanied by a notated list of the start time of each excerpt or they will not be accepted. ii. You must also complete the attached Recorded Audition Declaration stating that the recording has not been edited in any way, either by re-recording or by deleting false starts. The declaration should be signed by yourself and the recording technician/witness. You must provide your DVD or electronic file no later than 5.00pm AEST on Thursday 2 February 2017. iii. GENERAL MATTERS i. First Round audition times for persons attending auditions will be advised by email on Thursday 2 February by 5pm AEST. o Please contact Sara Pheasant, Personnel Manager, to advise of any time restrictions, such as flights; efforts will be made to accommodate where possible. ii. If successful, candidates will be advised of their Second Round audition time at the conclusion of Round One. iii. Round one will be held behind screens. iv. AUDITION ~ ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL CLARINET 9 & 10 FEBRUARY 2017 Orchestra Victoria is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Australian Ballet. As well as serving as performance partner to The Australian Ballet, Opera Australia and Victorian Opera, Orchestra Victoria produces its own concert performances around Melbourne and regional Victoria. The orchestra performs regular commercial engagements with a variety of promoters. Orchestra Victoria s education program is renowned across Victoria for providing professional training for young orchestral musicians. Our diverse range of activities makes us unique among Australia s eight professional orchestras. Orchestra Victoria seeks a musician of outstanding ability for the following position: ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL CLARINET The successful musician/s will be employed as a Contract Musician (3 years) in accordance with the OV-EA 2014-2017 and will be subject to a probationary period of up to six months. The salary range for this position applicable from 1 February 2017 is $76,458 to $96,500 plus superannuation and allowances. The successful candidate will be required to play Eb clarinet and other duties as outlined in the position description below on pages 6 and 7. Audition Thursday 9 February & Friday 10 February 2017 - Set repertoire 1. Mozart Clarinet Concerto K.622 in A major - 1st, 2nd & 3rd movements with piano accompaniment: 1st movt exposition (beginning up to bar 155) 2nd movt - starting at cadenza (bar 59) to the end 3rd movt beginning up to bar 179 2. Orchestral excerpts available on OV website For candidates undertaking a recorded audition please record the concerto as listed above in one take, and the excerpts in a second take. POSITION DESCRIPTION 1. Tutti Players General duties and work requirements are to: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) (j) (k) (l) (m) (n) work under the terms and conditions of this Agreement; play the instrument(s) for which the Player was auditioned; play any instrument in the relevant family of instruments as defined in Clause 2 of this Schedule provided that: i. the Player was auditioned on the relevant instrument(s), or ii. the Player is willing and has a recognised professional level of competence. provided that the artistic standards of the orchestra are not compromised, a Tutti Player will: i. perform higher duties if approved and willing; ii. iii. iv. play in combinations of seven or less (voluntary for Tutti players only); play off-stage and/or onstage situations if circumstances are deemed reasonable to do so by the Section Principal, Concertmaster and/or the Music Director, provided that the Player s artistic standards are not compromised. participate in any Education activity the Section Principal and/or Music Director deem to be appropriate for the level of competence of the player. Education work will not attract additional payment or penalties. undertake preparation of parts in advance of the first rehearsal; rehearse, perform and cover parts as required; mark parts and convey all relevant information consistent with the Section Principal s instructions, in a concise and timely manner; maintain a fully professional appearance and behaviour while on duty; follow the directions of the Section Principal in all matters relating to style, ensemble, intonation, articulation and bowing (as relevant) and seating; follow the performance directions of the Principal(s), Concertmaster(s) and Conductor(s) and accept instructions and performance feedback from Principal(s), Concertmaster(s), Music Director and Conductor(s); participate in auditions, trial assessment and other meetings as required; attend any meeting called by the Section Principal and Director of Orchestral Operations or Section Principal and the Music Director; not unreasonably refuse to be available for meetings with management and colleagues to discuss job-related issues; undertake promotional activities consistent with the Player's capacity as a professional musician and as agreed; provide instruments and accessories of a professional standard unless otherwise provided for in this Agreement; A tutti string player will play in any position in either the First or Second Violin Sections (except first desk) without additional remuneration and whenever requested to do so. 2. Associate Principal Players In addition to the duties of Tutti Players, the Associate Principal Players will: i. play principal and secondary parts as required; ii. if approved by the Concertmaster and/or Music Director assume the performing duties of Section Principal if that Section Principal is absent for more than one week; iii. assist the Section Principal in managing the section and preparing parts; iv. share the musical responsibilities of the section and lead the section when required due to rostering or unforeseen circumstances; v. in the case of the strings, sit on the front desk or in another position as required; vi. cover the Section Principal for all programs except those that have been agreed in advance. Associate Principals will play section parts and additional instruments in accordance with the following: Flute: Oboe: Clarinet: Bassoon: French Horn: Trumpet: Trombone: Timpani: Percussion: Alto Flute. Tutti Flute and/or Piccolo if indicated in the Flute part. Oboe d Amore. Tutti Oboe and/or Cor Anglais if indicated in the Oboe part. Tutti Clarinet and/or Eb clarinet and/or Bassett Horn. Tutti Bassoon. Wagner Tuba. Any Trumpet part. Play Bb, C, D, Piccolo Trumpets and Cornet. Any Trombone part other than Bass Trombone and play Alto Trombone if indicated in the score and deemed reasonable by the Player. Percussion parts in consultation with the Percussion Section Principal. Specialist instruments or parts when requested by the Section Principal. By tram, you can use the Grant Street (stop 17) for all the routes on St Kilda Road (numbers 1, 2, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, 72) except Route 1, which you may stop at Sturt Street (stop number 17). By vehicle: there is restricted street parking with a 2 or 3 hour limit between 7.30am and 6.30pm Monday Friday, but a number of secure car parks within walking distance.
