Lovereading4kids Reader reviews of Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner Below are the complete reviews, written by the Lovereading4kids members. Amy Laws, age 15 This book pulled on my heart strings, the story was moving and enthralling. Zentmer's novels are always enjoyable but I felt like this one is on another level. The characters seemed so life-like and I became completely wrapped up in their story. They were so easy to empathise with and I was really moved by the story. I was hooked from the very first word until the very last and I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster ride- it was both uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time. I was so upset when I came to the end of the story but I enjoyed every page. Jasmin Sherrett, Yr 9 - Great Torrington School I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. This book is beautifully written, yet heart achingly sad and made me cry more than once. Zentner described every situation perfectly, his characters relatable and lovable. I ll definitely read some more of his books. Celeste Phelan, age 15 A very thought provoking novel which definitely bought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. Carver had an ordinary life: he hung out with the Sauce Crew, attended Nashville Arts Academy and was passionate about writing. But his world came

crashing down when a simple text resulted in the deaths of his three best friends. Torn apart by guilt and grief, Carver embarks upon three completely different 'goodbye days' with the families of the victims in the aim of getting closure. But trapped in a whirlwind of law suits, panic attacks and love Carver wonders whether he will ever be able to forgive himself. My favourite part of this novel was when Carver shows Judge Edwards all of Mars' drawings in the aim of showing him who is son really was. Although it began with rage it ended in understanding. The character I liked the most was Jesmyn. Her sparky yet determined nature definitely added to the novel and helped console Carver. I would recommend this novel to children 12+ as it is a fantastic novel. However, it is very emotional at some points and forces the reader to step into Carver's shoes and wonder what they would have done in that situation. Humaira, age 19 Jeff Zentner is a favourite author by default. I knew I was going to love this book the minute I saw who had written it. The Goodbye Days was an emotional roller coaster that I would gladly go on again and again. The Serpent King, which is Jeff Zentner's first book, was my favourite book of 2016 and I think the same might be said for Goodbye Days for this year. Words can't explain how much I love this authors books, only that they make you feel and care so much. The best thing about reading this book was not reading the word themselves but living the words and being right there with the characters. Neha Saji, age 14 'Goodbye Days' by Jeff Zentner has quickly became one of my favourite books! I strongly recommend this book to everyone and anyone. It's so raw and conveys a great moral! 'Goodbye Days' by Jeff Zentner is a book about a guy called Carver who sends his friend a text, which leads to his friends being in a car accident and dying. It is a very emotional book, focusing on the guilty conscience of a teenage mind, and also a lot on death. I really liked this book because it was really relatable, not that I've sent a text to kill my friends or anything, but through how Carver is thinking and how he's dealing with the tragic event. Jeff Zentner is truly a talented writer, he was able to accurately portray different

characterisations, e.g. for the councilor, Dr Mendez. He has the power to make you think and reflect back on your own lifestyle. Although 'Goodbye Days' is very sad and has made me close to spilling tears, it is also very funny. My favourite character in the book has to be Blake; I love how he has been made to value laughter more than dignity. I loved this book! There was not one bit where I felt the book dragged on; every chapter, paragraph added new element to the book. I would rate 'Goodbye Days' by Jeff Zentner a well-deserved 4.5/5! Rebekah Marsh, age 14 This emotional roller coaster of a novella follows the life of Carver after the devastating deaths of his three best friends, the novella follows his path of dealing with the grief he now faces. The truly amazing novella is tear jerking, gut wrenching, and ever surprising all in one. It evokes a myriad of emotions within its 399 pages and hooks me more and more with each word. I genuinely could not put it down for days. Simply amazing. Sidney Greenslade, age 13 Goodbye Days is the captivating tale of Carver Briggs, a boy who wonders how he will ever overcome the despair and guilt he feels after his friends die in a tragic accident. Goodbye Days is a deep and emotional tale about Carver Briggs, who is a normal, happy seventeen-year-old boy until a single text ruins his life. Carver's friends, Eli, Blake and Mars are out seeing a film and are meant to pick Carver up from his summer job on the way back. He sends a text, asking them where they are. Carver waits, and waits, but his friends don't text back. Then he gets a call telling him there's been a car crash, a tragic accident, and Eli, Blake and Mars are all dead. Carver feels he'll never be happy again and is consumed by guilt - until Blake's grandma suggests a Goodbye Day for Blake, where they share memories about him and do the things he loved doing best. It seems to heal the pain the tiniest bit, and Carver wonders whether things might get better - until Mars's father accuses Carver of negligent murder. Carver is soon under the pressure of a potential court case, the loss of his friends and the raw hatred of Eli's twin sister. Can the Goodbye Days really help? Goodbye Days was a captivating story which really made me think.

The plot was amazing, unravelling slowly, keeping me gripped until the very end. The characters were fantastic, and I found myself turning the pages faster, desperate to know what happened to them! The tale really made you realise how precious, beautiful and fragile life is, and how important it really is to value and love every moment. Maisie Sadler, age 15 Pick up this book and read it! Just read it! It's such an emotionally amazing story! This is one of the saddest but most amazing books I've ever read. It's such an emotional story the whole way though and holds such a powerful message. I found it very relatable if I was in the same situation as Carver and didn't want to let the story go. Laura Solomon, age 13 As the story twists and turns, this book becomes even more tragic and beautiful. Heartbreakingly sad, throughout this gripping novel, we discover charismatic characters and beautiful spun stories. Guilt, love and grief. A lethal combination of emotions, can Carver survive them? When Carver s three best friends die in a car accident, the families and friends left behind are confronted with feelings of disclosure. So start the Goodbye days, memorial days for each of the three boys killed. The boys who didn t have enough time. Time to travel, find love, find opinions and explore knowledge. As if things could get worse, an investigation begins into the accident and the deaths that ensued and Carver has an unfortunate secret. No one understands the enormous weight heaped onto Carver s shoulders, the sinking feeling every time he turns around and they re not there. Three incredible, lifelong friendships are ripped from Carver s grasp if only he could have held on tighter if only if only. Like chalk off a chalkboard, the only people who knew Carver better that his parents ever could have are wiped out of his life for good, leaving a faint residue of laughter, happiness and memories. Hold onto that residue and treasure it or one day it will all be gone, fairy dust in the wind.

Edel Waugh This was a really emotional read. You have a teenage boy who loses his three best friends and he is blaming himself for what happened even though he was not there. The trouble is others are starting to blame him too leading to all sorts of stress and anxiety. There was so many times I tried to put myself in Carver's shoes, imagining what could happen or how I would react. The story has stayed with me since I read it which should tell you how memorable the plot was. Carver is a lovely kid, his heart is in the right place but one tiny moment in his life could wreck the rest of his life forever. This is one of those stories where something you do in a split second can change your life and it really gets you thinking about the choices you make and the people closest to you. Add this to your TBR pile immediately! You won't regret it! Amelie Chatham, age 14 Goodbye Days is a great story for those who love John Green s books or any tragic life story really. Goodbye Days tells the story of Carver Briggs. His three best friends have just died in a tragic car accident. But to him it was more than just a tragic car accident. He killed them. His text killed them. But now, because he is the last one left, everyone wants Goodbye Days. And they want him to take part. But Carver doesn t want to say goodbye. My favourite part of this book was when the families of the deceased teenagers realised that there was so much that they didn t know about their loved ones. I would definitely recommend this book, not just as a saddening grief story but as a comedy. Megan Chambers, age 16 This book was completely heart-breaking yet also completely beautiful. Once you pick it up, you won't put it down. This book was so good. The characters were really well written, even those that are side characters still had a lot of personality woven through them. The plot line is amazing, and Zentner managed to capture an amazing amount of emotion and relationships within such a small space, yet didn't make it confusing at all to the reader. He's a truly talented author. It contains such a positive portrayal of therapy, helping to break the stigma, and shows that issues don't just go away with love. My only criticism would be that some of the humour is immature, but it still makes a wonderful read.
